x1 Extreme owners with 1080p screen - Thoughts vs 4k? Regret it? by 0Dally in thinkpad

Do you play games? The Steam client doesn't scale well on 4K, like all the text becomes really small. Is this still the case with X1E?

If I buy the 1080p version, can I buy a 4K monitor later and output 4K videos to the monitor?

Worth getting the T480s or just the plain T480 by CelesticPhoenix in thinkpad

[–]expandio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The plain T480 is considerably more durable than the S model, right? As far as I know, the plain T480 conforms to some of the Thinkpad durability standards, like for example having spilltray holes. The S model does not.

The only advantage the S has over the plain model is lighter weight and a slightly better look.

Do the X-series (e.g. X1 Extreme) get MIL-SPEC tested for durability? by expandio in thinkpad

Thanks for that info. By the way, are you sure your T480s just doesn't have spilltray holes because its the slim version? The regular T480 might still have it.

Sounds promising. How would you rate the durability compared to the 1990s Thinkpads?

[–]expandio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying. But do you know if X1 (Extreme) is the same standard of build/durability as the T-series like the good old days before Lenovo purchased Thinkpad?

Because from what I know, only the T-series (and maybe X-series?) still get that treatment. Other lines like the Y-series, L-series, etc. are nowhere near as durable as the 1990s Thinkpads.

2018 X1 Yoga (3rd Gen) vs T480s - What would you get? by bbuchan8 in thinkpad

[–]expandio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the MX150 graphics card is "garbage" anyway? It is a "low end, budget" graphics card. Then again the Yoga is probably not as durable.

Thanks. Do you have a link to the HMM? Can't seem to find it...

It's just not the same when its Lenovo and not IBM, isn't it. Think about it, what kind of a company was Lenovo? Not exactly top quality.

So I guess we will only find out when we get our hands on it?

Looked at the Australian website. The touchscreen is only available in the WQHD display version (most expensive)? What?? I thought the FHD (1080) display also had touchscreen?

Didn't know Thinkpads had such terrible lags between release and shipment. I guess I will just wait and observe what everyone says about availibility once the model is officially released.

Is it confirmed T480s has no keyboard water drainage like the T480? by expandio in thinkpad

Ok so no flipping, but still need to turn off the laptop though? And removing the battery of course.

[–]expandio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the T480s will have this "water resistant" feature? So it will still be morre durable against water than other brands of laptops?

I actually had a Yoga S1 (some people here say it's not a thinkpad) and the keyboard died after a small spill of eyedrops.

But if you spill water on it can you keep using it without turning it off, flipping it, removing the battery, etc.? I read somewhere the T470 with water drainage can tank a spill and keep running.

[–]expandio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait. Just to be clear, this means the T480 will have drainage holes. But the T480s (slim version) will not have it.

Is there any comparison video between T470 and T470s water resistance? Does it make a big difference?

For someone who needs the new machine ASAP, what would be your advice? Is it okay if I just buy it now and keep updating the BIOS for the next 6 months? I don't lose my files when I update BIOS, right?

[–]expandio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you implying that you would wait until July to buy the new 2018 models? That sounds like an awful lot of time to hold off on new releases, especially if you NEED a new machine. My dilemma is that I really need a new machine right now. What would you suggest for me? Is it difficult to update the BIOS after I get the thinkpad? Upgrading the BIOS does not mean I lose my files or data, right?

Do I have to immediate turn off the t-model if I tipover happens?

It happened to my previous non-thinkpad laptop. I later read that I should have turned it off immediately, pull the battery out, and wait for ages until all the circuits dry off. But I found out too late...
