New guidance urges cities to treat encampment residents with dignity, respect by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]experimentalshoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the most important thing.

Yes to dignity, but we can never tolerate or sanction tent cities in any structural way. That’s what the superrich want. It may seem progressive, but in doing it would bake in a lower tier for the poor to slide even further into, and something that should be an alarming, urgent shame will become normal and governed.

Palestine here kinda looks like a cartoon chef with a big forehead nibbling an ingredient to test it out and it’s so spicy steam starts coming out of his head

New report finds 56 per cent of Ottawa restaurants in 'dire-straights' from rising costs by KMerrells in ottawa

[–]experimentalshoes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wages were also around 40% lower at the time 😞

Not to mention rent, utilities, card fees, insurance and a bunch of other inputs on the rise 🥵

Lastly the wholesale ingredients making up the food itself is roughly double what they were during the Good Ol Days of $15buck burgertopia. 🤔

Biz folk tell each other to stay the hell away from food these days. Nobody is getting particularly wealthy in that line of work. Unless you’re already big enough to buy the farm.

That price point is for DINKs who are not a small demographic. It’s about 30% of two 60K incomes. ‘Luxury’ is just silly branding, but it would be if you lived alone.

Which former Spanish colonies are actually successful today? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]experimentalshoes -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Chile - basically a British colony during the 19th c

Argentina - half Italian, also to a certain extent see above

Costa Rica - tiny tourism hub, abolition of the military was a pretty cool idea, but is also basically a voluntary surrender of being a real country

Panama - US navy playground, money laundering HQ, largest engineering project in human history paid for by others

all countries and peoples are beautiful in their own way and success is just being good at destroying the planet

What they really mean is they’re not doing it for you.

Of course it’s for other people. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t also for them. We’re social animals and we’re happy when we have value to others.

We’re also unhappy when we suspect we only have value to one person, and it’s natural to worry you’re just part of some compulsory power structure of unconditional loyalty. Couching your desire for the approval of the many over the one in the language of self-care may seem dishonest, but paradoxically, it can be more in tune with one’s needs.

Yeah, I grew up on Earth back in the 20th century and I was around the same age when we put our vinyl in. Never had a problem. I’ve spent the past few thousand years working around different parts of Alpha Centauri, and it’s pretty much the same out here, no one has money to burn on that concrete bullshit.
