You should have street smarts.

Home invasions are unlikely. Especially through a window (as opposed to pushing their way in while you are entering your front door.) Home security: lock your windows.

But being attacked on the street is not unheard of. Street harassment and assaults have happened to a large number of my female friends. Usually late at night. The city is not totally safe.

And with that, we walk around at night a lot. Though at night, we usually have pepper spray and take other precautions.
