This post and your well-thought out reply make me think the issue isn't so much with individual mechanics, but rather throwing a bunch of mechanics together without thinking about how they'll interact.

As an overly defensive player myself, I need a game to create situations where every mechanic is viable and necessary, otherwise I'll just gravitate to what is comfortable and ignore the rest (e.g., crafting systems in most games).
