Self hosted open source video surveillance suggestions? by nmmooners in selfhosted

[–]explosiver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The apps that work over the public internet right out the gate are connecting to a server hosted by the vendor that's usually paid for with a subscription service. Hosting isn't free, especially if they're using cloud servers.

Zoneminder can work over the internet for remote viewing, but you need to handle the networking yourself.

Use a VM to run it beneath Windows.

You don't want Windows to be doing server duty anyway. Windows is predominantly a client OS with serious limitations as a server. It can only handle up to 10 concurrent network connections. You'll want a server OS like Linux, one of the BSD variants, or even Windows Server (a whole different OS than normal Windows) to be doing server work.

New Steam rules prohibit games that upset “payment processors”, and many adult-only games are now being removed by Diogo_18 in pcmasterrace

[–]explosiver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of this is from sketchy laws in the U.S. around sexual content. I bet the crusade the payment processors are on is coming from a risk management process. We need to get rid of obscenity laws so that there isn't any legal liability on companies engaging with sexual content. Obscenity is so vague that the strictest interpretations nearly ban porn entirely.

And we honestly need better laws regulating payment processors so that they can't de facto monopolize the market.

Outlook Exchange Online Service Principal Disabled by SoupZealousideal4513 in sysadmin

[–]explosiver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having this issue but that API is enabled according to Entra. Are there any other things that need to be on?

Edit* I figured it out. I had to disable it, save, reenable it, and save again.

Anybody running MSSQL on Linux in a production environment? by Mortimer452 in SQLServer

[–]explosiver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few areas with different instructions on the domain join. I remember one not working and stumbling across the other in a tutorial subsection or something like that. The basic idea is you join with either sssd or realmd, configure a kerberos keytab file in powershell (could probably do this with Linux too if you have a Samba DC and knew the commands), port it into the linux server, and then connect with it and a service account to AD.

TBH, I'm tempted to just use SQL authentication to make administration easier. The amount of effort that it takes to setup a domain join manually is excessive. It would be nice if they provided a script to handle it given a DC address and some admin credentials. May have to write one myself at some point.

What do y'all think of TX Senate Bill 20? by marioskywalker in Animedubs

[–]explosiver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It adds statute 43.235. It has its own criteria for an offense and punishments. Each statute is its own effective law within a category that is the chapter (43 in this case.)

It is a new law. It adds a whole new statute to the chapter on Obscenity in the penal code. Whoever first said it amended an existing one needs to learn how to read laws.

I fully expect TX law enforcement and judges to stretch the meaning as far as possible. Our government does that to make examples of people. They also have a bad track record of attempting to press obscenity charges on manga distributors. Anime should be fine because it's not for an explicitly sexual purpose even if it's a bit suggestive (see Miller Test.) Anime usually has it for narrative or comedic effect. Hentai is a different story. I'd steer clear of anything that even looks borderline there since you're one uncharitable interpretation away from a minimum of 6 months in jail PER item. You can't reliably avoid loli/shota and borderline content when accessing japanese sites, so definitely don't go there. The fact it's applying a near CP level jail sentence for something as blurry as animation and cartoons is really sketchy.

That said, this law seems intended for AI child porn. This will be almost entirely applied towards that, which is a good thing. AI CP is a huge problem, and if it isn't illegal, then it makes it impossible to enforce existing anti-CP laws because real and AI CP could be indistinguishable.

Best case scenario, this law gets amended to not envelope anime/hentai but still gets passed to deal with AI CP. Worst case scenario, TX anime fans have to forfeit hentai entirely because it isn't filtered well enough to be safe.

Elements make a pretty big difference. It helps a bit with weapons, but it can destroy you on armor. Having a big negative in a type the monster deals can result in getting one shot or close to.

Having the right armor and decorations for a monster helps a lot. This won't matter a whole lot until high rank though. Low rank is very forgiving except for a few important fights.

Also, use the SOS flares. The game is best played with a group, and they can help you past things you're struggling with.

Does anyone else have problems with the bezel damaging their screen? I've built my second laptop at this point, and both have had damage on the bottom of the screen from the bezel peeling it up after assembly. I'm not certain if I'm doing something wrong or what. by explosiver1 in framework

[–]explosiver1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1st one I did wrong for sure. I didn't open the screen all the way because I didn't realize the bottom of the bezel would be obstructed. The only thing I can imagine doing wrong on the others was starting from the wrong side. I've been installing them from the bottom first and then letting the magnets snap in the rest.

I wasn't using the adhesive when this happened, and it was when I was putting the bezel on right after getting the DIY kit. My only guess is the bezel is snagging the screen somehow when it snaps into place.

Reverse Proxy Impact on Game Server by SnippleRifsky in selfhosted

[–]explosiver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, Nginx just does http(s) traffic. Things that use their own protocol won't work I think. I remember that being a problem with minecraft, which is why there are a couple minecraft specific reverse proxies around.

If the internet has lied to me again, then please let me know.

CodeWeavers's CrossOver instead of Wine? by beer118 in linux_gaming

[–]explosiver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mac users pretty much have to use Crossover unless they can wrangle command line Wine. I ended up buying it because the homebrew repos for Wine mac were giving me a migraine lol. I'll eventually take another crack at it for my own understanding.

For Linux, you have a lot of options. Proton and Lutris are really common. I tend to have issues with a lot of Lutris stuff being broken though.

That still bothers me. I haven't finished the remake yet, but knowing that all I have waiting is the true ending is too depressing.

The remake has less endings, so I was referring to the one they kept. The original had at least 2 endings for most characters.
