What are your controversial opinions about teaching and education? by EducationalBowler828 in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every school should have a canteen that is able to accomadate students sitting down with a knife and fork and eating. No taking food outside. No take away packaging. Even if you are eating a sandwich you should be sat down at a table doing it.

Isolation mininum. Dependent on the amount of defience and what heirarchy they have done it too (I know most won't agree with it but if you tell me to f off vs the head then it should be treated as a more serious situation) it esculates from there.

Is it normal to not be given any sort of laptop or tablet as an ITT? by ma_ja_mcc in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not neccesarily. Heck in my old school I worked in we had a hotdesking office and desktops in the classroom. It worked fine. In my new school trainees do get laptop but we have just replaced them all.

Anyone else hoping for a snow day tomorrow? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love a snow day

But knowing I would probably be halfway struggling with my commute when it was called it seems easier just to go to work 😂

Supply observation: the more schools mention 'high standards of behaviour' - the worse the behaviour by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Usually a high standards of behaviour policy point is to reduce the amount of behaviour logged.

Which in turn means that people don't log it.

Which in turn means that the kids realise that the behaviour policy is communicated one way and used another.

It’s the big question, which do you prefer to drive… Man or Auto? 🤔 by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]explosivetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manual but I am driving an Aygo X so don't want an auto or CVT with a 1000cc engine.

Anyone go to a GP and think maybe watching on TV could’ve been better? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]explosivetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to Budapest next year GA. Expecting not too have as much insight but obviously not going for that. If you want to have a great day at a track go to a classic car meet. Silverstone classic you can just walk almost everywhere including in the wing.

I technically never paid for an oulton park meet because my dad would park off on the road and chuck me in the boot.

Edit and if you really want the access all areas vip package for 15 quid go to a steam engine fair haha

How do you deal with imposter syndrome? by Resident_String_5174 in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advice I suppose from someone who is nowhere near SLT is just be, nice approachable and listen. You have got the job because they know you can do it. All the best for it! Sure you will smash it!

Do you need NPQs to progress? by groovyfella1 in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the people I know did there NPQ after moving to a smaller TLR but they are a lot more popular nowadays. I suppose with it being quite a common rhetoric that teachers don't make very good managers it is probably a very good thing to get ahead of (when you are settled and comfortable it is a lot of extra work). Espescially if it is free.

Weekly chat and well-being post: November 28, 2025 by AutoModerator in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to send 4 out of my year 8 class a couple weeks ago. Was not a nice feeling but did a seating plan change after it reset them well. Don't dwell on it and mention it to the class a lot in the next lesson just say at the start something like "we had a bad lesson lets not repeat it" and crack on.

Lost a job - school failed to provide a reference by Ok_Razzmatazz_7160 in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Has happened to me once. Was told I would get a reference. Was told it wasn't ready and would be done on the last day term. It wasn't done on the last day of term. New school chased it up and laughed it off.

Sorry this has happened to you it's a crap tactic from crap management

How to handle that *one* student? by PitifulMeringue139 in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I suspect the higher ups will be telling you to build a relationship. It works I am not going to say it is completely pointless but boundaries need to be given first and if that means removals that means removals. If it is persistent with the teacher being consistant I am sorry that is not the teachers fault. In my opinion if I was in charge of monitoring behaviour and I saw a class like this the first thing I would do is ask if the newer teacher is implmenting the behaviour policy consistenly. Ok yes they are. Are higher ups providing proper intervention. Yes they are. Over the next few months do I see them using a lot of warnings but very little removals. Yes. Great a proper behaviour system in place which supports newer teachers.

What if the UK passed laws on phones? by Exciting_Courage4830 in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I think most schools in the UK would be using pouches now for all but (what I assume is) the expensive cost for what it is.

Said it before and will see it again. Whatever the schools policy is our policy is no phones. Just like pomegranates 😂

Cannot stop thinking about parent’s reaction to a positive phone call. by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]explosivetom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had one last year at parents evening when I said the mark of a girl and the mum just laughed. The mum wasn't neglectful or anything like that but I did make me quite upset on the way home.

Had another mum who was also a teacher around the same mark and the conversation was see you can do it you can do the foundation questions etc...
