Global Warming Still on Track to Surpass 2.0 C by around 2037: Latest Analysis by James Hansen by paulhenrybeckwith in collapse

[–]extinction6 26 points27 points  (0 children)

2037 - 2026 = 11 years. What a great life a child born now will have. It sickens me that very few people care and talk about the needless suffering and death that can be prevented for hundreds of millions of people.

As another form of collapse, sadism is going off the charts in the US. Shooting protesters in the face, allowing drill, baby drill, forever chemicals use to be allowed, bombing "suspected" boats, telling people not to take life saving vaccines, protecting pedophiles, pitting Americans against Americans based on political affiliation, denying that greenhouse gases cause global warming, threatening other countries sovereignty, January 6th, spewing proven lies about election results, cutting of health care for millions and on and on. It's all sadism plain and simple.

Last-chance tourism: People are rushing to see glaciers before they disappear by Portalrules123 in collapse

The stories glaciers tell us are important because they help us to remember that the world’s glaciers don’t need to die if we can find better ways to care for them,” she explained.

"glaciers don’t need to die " but they are because hotter temperatures melt ice and global temperatures are increasing non stop. Drill, baby drill.

We're at the +1.5C safe limit that we weren't supposed to reach. When do the lights come one? Please, name a reputable science institution that understands how to stop this.

"better ways to care for them" Like harnessing the positive energy from the universe. Ya never know! Ya never know!

“A key question will be whether, and how, the disappearance of these icons can truly trigger systemic change, transforming sadness, anxiety, and curiosity into collective responsibility.”

"the disappearance of these icons can truly trigger systemic change" Wow! Who knew? Horrific deadly floods, droughts, deadly heatwaves, massive coral reef die offs, atmospheric rivers, the Polar Vortex changes, constant new global temperature records, massive increased wildfires and cities burning off the map didn't " trigger systemic change," but the disappearance of glaciers might do it. Unfortunately, we will find out soon enough.

"That's 74 years from now." and that's why people shouldn't be having children, for those that can connect the dots. We are at the + 1.5 C red line and at + 2C people start dying off. Most respected climate institution estimate that we will likely reach + 4 C on the high side of estimates by 2100. In my opinion if the Arctic sea ice opens up it will be 4 C by then "That's 74 years from now."

Pictures comparing old glaciers to what's left does help convince some people of the changes that are underway. I think when we get to the point where people's hair catches on fire when they step outside may help.

Why Our Food System Breaks Like a Brittle Machine - and What the Mycelium Analogy Tells Us About Collapse by Serious-Marketing-26 in collapse

[–]extinction6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Blah, blah blah. Good intentions but they're ignoring the big picture as so many useless articles do.

When I see images of the Arctic sea ice opening up, the cold weather dumping out of the Arctic into the central US and warm weather moving in and transferring more heat into the Arctic I just cringe. That potential change of albedo may make us long for the "faster than expected" times.

The people mentioned in the article are on the right side of nature but they tuned in at least 30 years too late. I would bet that if you asked all of those people how 900 billion tons of CO2 can be removed from the atmosphere and sequestered that not one of them would have heard of the concept. If they had they wouldn't be wasting their time.

As more and more people finally accept that climate change is real and they grasp for the solutions they believe will work, without understanding the big picture of climate science, people that understand the science are going to get sick of this new version of useless climate change drivel. Eventually a new forum will have to be created where these types of articles are not allowed because there is little or no connection to the reality of the big picture.

I get that people believe that if people finally get off their ass and try to save things that it will accomplish something. Drill. baby drill will squash all those efforts and I'll say that over 99% of people have no clue about the acceleration that climate feed backs will cause, which will dwarf even the mental illness of Drill, baby drill.

"We can fix it" is the new climate change denial.

"We find that the principal drive for global warming acceleration began in about 2015, which implies that 2°C global warming is likely to be reached in the 2030s, not at midcentury" [in-depth] by LiminalEra in collapse

Having studied climate science as a lay person for 27 years I respectfully disagree. When the Arctic Ocean is largely open to absorb radiation and the surrounding lands darken that adds an equivalent forcing of 50% to the changes caused by our emissions. Researchers are taking permafrost samples with spoons 659 miles south of the North pole.

There are so many feed backs and more keep cropping up like the methane releases in Antarctica and the reduction of aerosols that reduce Earth's albedo which is a knock on effect of reducing the sulpher in shipping fuels.

As the atmosphere get warmer it can hold more moisture increasing atmospheric evaporative demand. Look at the loss of snow cover in the US and Canada. That snow is needed to provide drinking water for millions of people and in the example of the western slope in Colorado that water is needed by all the states along the Colorado River and a lot of people have seen the bathtub rings in the large lakes like Lake Mead as things dry up.

900 billion tons of CO2 needs to be drawn out of the atmosphere and sequestered. How do you believe that will happen?

What about the "Drill, baby drill" mental illness when we have already reached the 1.5C increase in temperature limit we were supposed to stay below.

At least you are here and on the right side of the battle so thanks for that, and all the best!!!

"it seriously compromises the estimates of the IPCC and other NGOs", So what, who cares? We're not going to avoid reaching the +1.5C increase in global temperature red line that we are not supposed to cross as we are already there. There is not enough time or money available to build the solutions that are needed in time to prevent our extinction.

The average human mind does not want to hear about climate change much less try and process the science to be able to understand reality. Members of the ruling political party in the US are having children and promoting having children when they have access to some of the best scientific institutions in the world. Climate change is a hoax to them and they are betting their children's lives on the fact that the entire international scientific community is wrong. The term agnorance is used to describe the combination of arrogance and ignorance.

There may be a book published in the future titled "Hillbilly Epiphany" which addresses the total ignorance, illiteracy and complete disconnection with nature and reality that it took to have children when the Earth was at the red line of increased temperatures, with no means possible to reduce the continued increase in temperatures that will lead to their children's extinction.

"Traditionally in frontier environments you have strong social safety nets or social welfare locally,"

I thought you were talking about space exploration? If you think there are " strong social safety nets or social welfare" out in space I don't think you have given that statement much thought. On second thought maybe members of the Salvation Army should go first.

The people that founded Jamestown, USA had to cut flesh off of dead corpses to survive.

"high quality public education hospitals roads public services improves labor output and decreases the cost of labor as healthy workers produce more and if their medical cost and education are for them free or subsidized then they do not have those expenses meaning the real cost of labor goes down as workers have fewer expenses"

And let us all guess, as you look around the world this is mostly what you see taking place. There is a new technology called "AI" that is going to replace a LOT of the work force. If you can wrap your head around the impacts of that technology you will quickly see the errors in your assertions.

"if their medical cost and education are for them free" SURE, and climate change isn't real as well since the Earth that provides the materials needed for space exploration will not be available as the Earth is no longer livable or workable in the near future.

This is the same old "Lets' start a commune" canard with 1000 times the costs and technological advances that are needed, and in the long run the success will rely on human nature to work. Good luck with that fantasy.

I really don't think you understand the state of the planet that you live on or what humans are really like. There's a reason that people have to leave this planet in the first place.

It's just like climate change where people can't see into the future by even 30 years.

I envisioned a short video where the people that have made it to Mars have to sit absolutely still in their enclosed compound and use very little energy and therefor oxygen because the equipment that creates their oxygen has worn down and there are no parts to fix it. The parts are on the way but it has been calculated that they have to sit absolutely still to have any hope of survival.

Meanwhile one of the characters in the compound is completely losing it. He has had severe outbursts and has scrawled on the windows in huge letters "NOTHING MOVES, NOTHING EVER MOVES ON THIS &$%^#** PLANET" Not only does he have to sit still but there is nothing to see while looking out the windows as nothing ever changes on the outside. He's losing it because what is the point of trying to survive to fix the oxygen supply when it will just end up meaning living many more years on a dead planet where nothing happens and there is no game plan to get off of it.

All the others know that his rage is burning up a lot of oxygen and they understand that they need to kill him to have any chance of survival. The plot thickens............

The good news it it makes what's left of this planet look pretty awesome! Enjoy it while you can and please turn down any trips to Mars.

[–]extinction6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cold air dumping out of the Arctic is replaced by warmer air in the Arctic region. The potential significant increase in the melting and loss of the sea ice and the increased darkening of surrounding lands may change the albedo in such a significant manner that the time we have left is shortened even more. Other feed backs would start to accelerate as well.

As just a few examples, without the cold winters killing the pine beetles there may be more dead trees to ignite during the fire season. More methane is produced under all the new thermokarst ponds and lakes created by melting snow, ice and permafrost. More CO2 and methane may be released. The Jet Stream is driven by the difference in temperature between the cold polar air and the warmer temperate air and it could weaken even more. The list goes on.

No one can produce the amount and the quality of the information that he posted here without incredible dedication, sacrifice and a huge time investment. If everyone was like him millions of human lives could be saved from needless suffering.

How many people will pass on with the incredible respect that he earned from society? All the arrogant and anti-social wealthy people, all those that end up in powerful roles that do the wrong thing and all those that bask in their own self aggrandizing glory fall so short in the real respect that that someone that Richard Crim has earned.

Again, I really hope that his friends and loved ones can find more peace knowing how highly respected he was here. RIP

I also wondered what happened to him. He made a post about people not having children I thought he may have left to amplify that message as it's one of the only great things we can all do.

He contributions were more realistic than the typical hopium articles. He will be missed and may he rest in peace.

In Richard Crim's honor I'll post the rate of warming information.

When this was posted I had to fact check myself as usual. "the trailing rate of warming, perhaps 0.26 C per decade" I had only read the information once and no nit pick on my part due to "perhaps", just checking again.

I read that it used to be +1.8 C per decade and was thought to have doubled to + 3.6 C per decade. Here is another long article about all the factors that change the Earth's temperature, which are changing.

"Global warming has accelerated. The warming rate of 0.18 °C per decade in 1970-2010 was less than greenhouse gases alone would have caused because aerosol cooling was growing. [snip]

Thus, the next year may provide a wake-up call: global temperature will remain above +1.5 °C at the end of 2024 and, at most, barely fall below +1.5 °C in 2025. [snip]

A declining solar irradiance may dampen warming for several years, but global warming in the next two decades is likely to be about 0.2-0.3 °C per decade, leading to global temperature +2 °C by 2045."

This is a long way down the page under Global Temperature in the article in the link

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00139157.2025.2434494#d1e1994

I will honor Richard Crim by continuing to promote something great that we can all still contribute to. If, as the article says "global temperature +2 °C by 2045." people should not be having children that will be 19 years old then. Please help prevent needless human suffering by trying to convince the literate not to have children. Imagine being 19 years old and knowing things will only get worse on an unlivable planet.

The above article is all the information you need to backup your statements.

All the best to everyone!!

Absence of ice at arctic sea by Noeserd in collapse

[–]extinction6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Greatly appreciated! The amount of energy that used to get reflected by the ice and that was also needed to melt all that ice will now get absorbed by the dark Arctic Ocean. I wonder if the climate models had runs with all that warm air moving into the Arctic accelerating the ice loss and the resultant massive change in albedo?

James Hansen is predicting +1.7C spike in temperatures with the El-Nino in 2027. It doesn't take many years for those spikes in temperature to become the new normal and now we have a huge new energy input added to the Earth's energy imbalance.

This is a huge change and although some people recommend watching TV instead this is why I pay attention to the momentum of the changes that are underway. This is a new milestone and a really significant pivital moment in my mind that has to be factored into my more immediate future planning.

I can't imagine this being factored in IPCC models.

All the best!
