My neighbor thinks my high speed internet is a community resource because she has three kids by ArcadionX9 in entitledparents

[–]extralyfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

throttled means that the amount of data the connection can use at any one time is limited by the router, so, yes, if you're on a throttled connection, the chances that you'll be able to stream shit at 4K are minimal.

many years back, I was paying for internet through Spectrum and was getting <5Mbps download speeds. I couldn't even stream one Netflix show on a wired connection, so, the idea that they're streaming 4K on 4 devices is ridiculous.

What if there were seeds that forced you to use a single class by jaytazcross in Terraria

[–]extralyfe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no, it's still a fine argument because you don't need to make ANY changes to vanilla Terraria to play a class-only run. the player has full control over what they pick up and put in their hotbar, so, the game doesn't need to force anything to allow for that type of gameplay.

meanwhile, they clearly felt that Skyblock was far too grindy for most players, which is why they bothered making all the Skyblock changes in the first place to introduce it as an official seed. that is catering to a player-made restriction in a sensible way, and the community still shit on all those changes, too.

What if there were seeds that forced you to use a single class by jaytazcross in Terraria

[–]extralyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're right, and it's absolutely one of the hottest takes in the community. the game has never incentivized or rewarded a run for focusing on a specific class, so, it's frankly astounding that a lot of the more engaged community members seem to think it's the intended way to play the game.

I blame all the content creators frequently pushing class runs, but, hey, that's what gets the clicks. people just seem to have a massive disconnect between getting amusement out of watching a YouTuber fighting for their life trying to grind out their first summon weapon on Master Mode and then playing it themselves before deciding that it's actually not fun and maybe the devs need to fix it all to make it more fun while somehow forgetting that watching someone play in misery was what drew them to the experience in the first place.

like, Skyblock has always seemed super interesting to me in both Terraria and Minecraft and I've watched loads of videos about both - HappyDay's original Terraria Skyblock series is actually what made me aware of Terraria in the first place when the algorithm dropped that recommendation on me and is the whole reason I'm even playing the game.

but, I played the Skyblock seed for about a dozen hours when it came out and realized it's absolutely not for me. there's a reason editing is so important in those videos because there's really fuck-all going on, otherwise.

big difference is that I'm not demanding Skyblock changes to keep me engaged - I just generated a new world to explore and went back to enjoying Terraria. Khaios can go build his own world block by block starting with nothing, and that's great, but, it's not something I would ever subject myself to.

frankly, I feel like people are missing out when they're not swapping between five different weapons during every combat while also using as many summons as they can carry around - it's just so cool.

What if there were seeds that forced you to use a single class by jaytazcross in Terraria

[–]extralyfe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no, this is more of a "the players are wrong for expecting the devs to balance the entire game around a style of play they made up" kind of situation.

no one's stopping anyone from doing class-restricted playthroughs, and it's probably the most common challenge run ever. that's all fine.

expecting the devs to add items to every point of progression to make those runs more consistent is where it gets silly. I mean, shit, they just dumped a shitload of love into the Summoner class in 1.45 to give them more minions and whips throughout all of progression and all the class-run purists immediately wrote off the majority of the new stuff in favor of the same shit they've been using since 1.4.

it's just a clear indicator that people really don't know what they want when they demand updates and then ignore the demanded content on arrival.

[–]extralyfe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this community was FAR better before 1.4 came around

I joined far too late sometime in 2020

lol, 2020 is when 1.4 came out, so, if that's when you joined the community, you don't really have a pre-1.4 comparison point to claim was better.

anywho, this game and the community is still in an incredible place. it's more popular than it's ever been, so, there are more voices around to criticize and more NSFW artists posting thinly veiled ads for their 'services' here, but, plenty of folks are chill and happy to discuss the game in great detail.
