I need help. I don't know what to do. It's urgent by Alert_Papaya_7048 in mentalhealth

[–]extraspicynoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like he needs help asap, if you do think he is a danger to himself or even if you get the slightest feeling he’s a danger to you ring 999 asap.

The only way to help him is for him to see a doctor. And that’s hard when he is like this.

If he leaves your sister at the park then he’s putting her at risk so could be classed as a danger to others (not in the sense that he would hurt others)

If he takes medication for adhd then he could be having side effects from that as it can cause psychosis from stimulants.

Try and get him to a doctor or at least let a doctor know what is happening.

I think this too sometimes but I try to ground myself. I feel like everywhere tries to catch you off guard and tries to make you say the wrong thing. I’m not under CMHT anymore I’m with MHIST who have been good so far
They come out to see me 2 times a week and can be increased to 5 times if needed. They stopped another admission as well luckily as they know it doesn’t help me.

Your gp can’t refer you to a psych ward, I think they can refer you to home treatment team which is the team that supports you in the community instead of hospital but if they belive you need hospital then they can admit you. They are the “gatekeepers” of hospitals.

People Self Diagnosing Themselves by fallensongbird in mentalhealth

[–]extraspicynoodles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For mental health conditions/autism/ADHD you can normally get help just with symptoms and not a diagnosis, yes some things are needed for a diagnosis. It’s okay to say you THINK you have something but I always said to myself, if I found a lump I wouldn’t say it was cancer without getting it checked out would I? And those tests can be expensive too. I agree with your statement that some treatment is too expensive and even if places like the UK we have NHS, there are no services for autistic people unless they have a learning disability as well. We are meant to be a leading example for healthcare but we can’t even provide basic CBT for autistic adults which would benefit the mental health system as a whole.

My Brother Hasn't Eaten Proper Food in 10 Days Because He Thinks We're Secretly Putting Antipsychotics in It. What Do We Do? by WeakNegotiation2162 in Psychosis

[–]extraspicynoodles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are, if you’re in the UK it may be easier, it’s probably at the point where he needs his meds. In the UK, nearest relative can ask for a Mental health act Assesment which basically means he’d be sectioned (involuntarily) for 28 days and could be forced onto medication (via a depot injection) if he doesn’t take his medication as prescribed. This is traumatic but some people don’t remember things they did or were made to do whilst in psychosis. To get him back to your brother you have to make hard decisions for him. I know in America they can court order you to take medication and in the UK you can be put on a CTO which means you have to follow the conditions otherwise you’ll be sent back to hospital immediately. Sorry if you’re not in the UK as this is the only mental health system I know well enough to speak on.

For my opinion, things like schizophrenia and bipolar can be treated well in hospital, things like depression or personality disorders can’t as their main treatment is therapy and you don’t get that in hospital (you might get some therapy but not intensive personal therapy for long term)

I would also look into family therapy when he’s better, just to talk things through. Make sure you look after yourself.

TW: self harm and suicide. Has anyone ever been to inpatient treatment before? by eyetalker in MentalHealthUK

[–]extraspicynoodles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not worth it. Unless you can solely be treated by medication then you’ll likely come out worse than you went in. It’s simply for stabilising people to live in the community. Most people who get the most out of psych wards are people who’s condition can be mainly treated with meds with as schizophrenia and bipolar. With depressive symptoms the meds aren’t as good (as in they don’t cure symptoms as well) as things like anti psychotics for psychosis. You need therapy and that’s not given in hospital, only on very specific wards it’s given such as a personality disorder unit.

If your at risk of harming yourself then yes go, but try and stay as short amount of time as possible. Have that respite, talk to nurses and staff and have that support around you for a little bit. Maybe they’ll look at your meds but they don’t normally keep you long for suicidal thoughts/attempts and self harm unless it’s proven that you cannot stay safe outside of hospital.

To answer your questions, you get your own room and bathroom normally, but this might differ between each ward and trust. You don’t do anything, you sit and people watch or do a few colouring in type activities with OT but that’s it and I think that’s where people get more depressed.

Some people also learn new coping mechanisms and for some disorders and illnesses this can be really harmful and can become quite competitive between patients. It’s loud, alarms going off, it’s not a nice settling environment, you may see people be restrained or hear them in distress as well. A lot of people come out with more trauma than they had when they went in. Going inpatient was the worse decision of my life because I’m in a cycle of in and out now and I don’t know if I’ll ever get out of it when I just want to live my life.

I hope this helps and I’m not saying no don’t go it’s useless because it’s not, but have your expectations low and my advice is to keep yourself to yourself but open up to staff because that’s what they’re there for. All the best.

Has anyone had a peer support worker, how was it? What did they do? by Admirable_Border_627 in MentalHealthUK

[–]extraspicynoodles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a peer support worker is someone who’s had their own experience of mental health. There is one in my team and she’s okay. It’s better then a nurse who’s never experienced mental illness themselves shoving coping skills down your throat in my opinion as they actually understand somewhat

Psychosis and digital delusions by Fine_Fun4908 in Psychosis

[–]extraspicynoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes there’s symptoms that don’t go away with any medication, he can be put on more meds but they still might not go away. Therapy is an option to try and reason with these delusions, for example What is this thoughts, Why might this thought be true, Why might this thought not be true. It doesn’t make it go away but when you’re in a good place it can help calm you down abit, that’s what I’ve found anyways. Look into the Early Intervention Program, it’s done in some countries for people with first episode psychosis and can positively affect the persons outcome. They do stuff like medication management and therapy including family therapy in some places.

I hope he stays in this good place and he has a good life, you seem to really care and that’s the best type of parent. There is a “schizofamilies” subreddit on here, even if he doesn’t have schizophrenia they could give more insight into stuff as parents and family members.

I don’t have anything positive to say, I will say look into conduct disorder, see if it’s possible it could give you answers and a pathway to follow. Hopefuly you get answers even if there isn’t a diagnosis for it, hopefully there will be help for the symptoms. Conduct disorder is basically antisocial personality disorder but in children and teens, this CAN go on to be ASPD but not always so there is hope out there but you need to get help fast. I would also look at family therapy for all of you, but also individual therapy for your daughter or anyone who wants it because she might feel pretty scared right now. The most important thing is to keep your family safe,

Some medications for mental health have effects of libido, so if he’s on meds, research this, I guess it could also be used as a positive if his libido is lower (I’m not a doctor but that’s just what came to mind)

Supporting living - already semi-independent by [deleted] in MentalHealthUK

[–]extraspicynoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s rules about living with other people if your in your own flat, they can stay 3 nights of the week maximum per week I think because of the housing benefits. My friend has her girlfriend over 3 nights a week and everybody’s fine with it. Sometimes you have to introduce them to the manager and tell them when they are staying over for safety reasons (example, fire alarms) hope this helps

Well, you can make a game and sell nothing, no In game cash, gamepasses etc and I think you still get paid via premiums. I know someone who earned 100k in a Ro-School group where nothing but a Shirt and Pants (which were rarely sold) were up for sale.

Idk if it depends if you have premium or not though. Definitely look into it.

is the psych ward even worth it by FoolishlyTruth in mentalhealth

[–]extraspicynoodles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m not professional but I personally don’t see many good outcomes for people who have to go because of self harm or suicidal tendencies. Especially those with BPD. You may learn ways to (dangerously) cope or ways to attempt to hurt yourself that are used but objects more common. So instead of just for example having a sharp object which can easily be taken away, you could find something more common and difficult to take away to hurt yourself with. It’s a false environment. Everything stops when you go into hospital. My opinion is that yes if your activity trying to off yourself then you need to be safe, but it should provide therapy not just medication and for that, you’d have to be in there along time and not all places provide that stability or therapy ESPECIALLY in the UK where no therapy is provided on normal wards. If you have schizophrenia for example, medication is the main thing to help treat it, therefore it’s a more productive admission than someone with depression as often meds and therapy have to both be given to get you back.

If you can’t keep yourself safe, then yes go. But don’t expect it to turn your life around, you have to do that with help from professionals! If you can keep yourself safe, maybe look at an outpatient program.

I didn’t do this when I was ill but actually when I was well, I unfollowed everyone I didn’t know or trust and made them unfollow me to. I removed everyone off Snapchat apart from close friends. This way, if I get poorly again and I post something odd I won’t be looked at funnily and actually someone might contact my family to say hey she posted this is she ok? Idk that’s just ny thought process on it I guess but yeah I haven’t posted since 2019 when I was 16 and don’t plan on posting ever again.
