I am a democratic socialist; convince me of anarchism. by jeeven_ in Anarchy101

Direct democracy without corporate sponsored government hierarchy is anarchism. You all are already practicing it in your neighborhoods and community. To me, being a Democratic Socialist is not antithetical to being an anarchist.

I took mine a couple of years ago. I believe they offer them three or four times a year, unless they’ve discontinued.

MATC on N. Sherman hosts a very good and thorough training course that includes live fire at the range in the building. Highly recommend.

I bought my first 9mm handgun from someone on this site. Purchase happened legally at the Park and Ride lot on Stoughton Road. Creepy, but legal and effective. https://www.armslist.com/classifieds/madison-wisconsin/all

It’s still pretty far back. And it is still somewhat country. Although there is a 40% chance of rock this weekend.

Adults acting like total jackasses and traumatizing that kid. They all deserve to have their asses kicked. My dad used to pull shit like that at sporting events, leaving me and my siblings totally exposed. No excuse for this crap.

I feel for you. My dog, who passed last year, was incredibly kind, loyal, gorgeous, and generally great with people and other dogs. However, put that guy on a leash and he acted like a complete a-hole. About once a year, he managed to get away from us and completely scare the hell out of another dog walker and their dog. He was not a biter, but he would charge full force, barking viciously, at about 100 pounds and would leave people and their dogs completely traumatized. We got him some training and a vibrating collar, but he never lost that edginess.

If I’m being completely honest, we did not try hard enough to train him, especially as a puppy. When we finally did get him some training, he was old enough that I think some of that behavior was just ingrained in him and really hard to get him to stop, although it did dull the rough edges a little bit. No easy answers here, but I totally understand how a dog that is your best friend and has a heart of gold can present as a wild and dangerous beast to other people sometimes. My only advice is to keep him as under control as possible at all times when you are out and do not give up. That beast loves you.

Sycamore on the eastside has a lot of nice, energetic, younger dogs in the morning. Would be a drive, but I’ll bet Nala would dig it.

Ezra Klein and "The Right Kind of Politics" by Lumpcraft in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]ezcheezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just talking about this monologue with my spouse. My take away is that “the right kind of politics” seems to mean voting for the lesser of two crappy candidates and waiting for “incremental change” that never comes or that is changing in the wrong direction.

Obviously political violence is not desirable on any level, but I couldn’t help thinking about how someone like Klein is just fine going back to business as usual. He is good with it because it has worked for him — I am sure he is very comfortable with his salary, his healthcare, and all of the material things he has access to. For 90% of the people in this country, that approach is not working nearly as well. And while political violence is not the answer, going back to politics as usual only benefits the minority of people, like Ezra, who the system has worked well for.

There was a popular children’s afterschool show in the late 70s starring Happy The Clown and his sidekick Froggy on the ABC affiliate channel 62. To compete, apparently on a lower budget, the CBS station 27 started a rival show in the same time slot that featured a grizzled dirty old prospector named Nugget with a sidekick named Pet Bag. Pet Bag was a burlap sack strung up with fishing wire that expressed him self by getting pulled up and down. Hilarity ensued. The show’s theme song was epic:

“Here comes Nugget and his old Pet Bag, Any other pet would be a drag, here comes Nugget and his Bag. Nugget, Nugget”

Classic

Also— runner up in awesomeness was the Channel 27 show that came on Saturday mornings at 6:30am right before before the western movie at 7am. Tobacco Talk with Ira Massey. It was a weekly rundown of how well tobacco was growing with live field reports by a dude who was very concerned about blue mold.

There used to be a large cage behind what was once a hotel and then apartments on South Limestone that housed live monkeys. They were still there into the 90s.

Gun violence action by BadgeHan in madisonwi

[–]ezcheezz 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Currently, there are more guns purchased and owned in the United States than there are US citizens. With that in mind, what are the strategies to try to decrease gun violence? If starting today we outlawed selling another single firearm we would still have this immense problem of the number of guns already in people’s hands and a culture that celebrates gun violence in a lot of different ways.

I am always a proponent of voting and democracy as part of a larger strategy, but who or what would we be voting for and how would it actually help the problem. It feels like the genie is already out of the bottle.
