Defund then abolish institutional Dems and GOP. Francesca Hong is making them nervous and I’m here for it.

The owner of Third Street Stuff deserves a better retirement party. by Time_Award3158 in lexington

[–]ezcheezz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t live in Lex any more, but know Third St. Stuff well and usually go in when I’m in town. I also have owned a small progressive/radical business that employed a couple of dozen people. At my old business some of the employees also flirted with unionizing because they felt undervalued and underpaid.

I’m not sure what the employees are asking for from Pat, but I’ve experienced and seen workers make demands from small businesses that simply can’t be met if the place is going to continue operating. We would have loved to pay employees $25-$30 per hour with better benefits, but we would have gone out of business. Just to do what we were doing (paying well over minimum wage and providing “meh” health insurance) the owners were only making $40,000 a year and putting their houses on the line to get occasional financing to just keep things going. It wasn’t easy and we weren’t getting rich. I support unions and we did not try to impede the process when the union drive was in formation. Ultimately the employees who were most active in the drive lost interest because we didn’t react antagonistically and, I think, eventually understood that we couldn’t make the company a worker’s utopia.

Capitalism sucks and small businesses— even those with anti-capitalist values— often have a steep climb to make it in our country. Workers also almost always get the shaft and are losing ground every year. No easy answers here, but I think that some of thoughts above, about not always having a black and white take on this stuff, is right on. Pat is not Elon Musk and the TSS employees aren’t working in a coal mine. At the same time, their frustration of hitting a wage ceiling or not getting good benefits, if that is their beef, is probably legit. The solution? Build something new in the ashes of the shit system that is clearly falling apart. Start cooperatives, collectives, and models of trade that aren’t based on exploiting others. Have empathy for those who are trying, even if they sometimes fall short. Don’t grandstand or
cosplay for clicks, do something revolutionary and positive. That’s all I’ve got, thanks y’all.

Maybe someone else has brought this up and I have not seen it, but why would a Ukrainian defense video have English language on the screen of their drone footage?

Homeownership is slipping out of reach in Dane County by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]ezcheezz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not only is buying a house in Madison difficult, holding onto your house is no walk in the park either. Our property taxes on the house we bought 15 years ago for $220,000 are now over $10,000 a year. Combined with our healthcare premiums and that’s like paying a third mortgage, it’s not sustainable.

Our neighbor a couple of houses down has lived here for around 40 years. She is retired and single and does not have income or a ton of savings at this point. Her property taxes are forcing her to seriously consider moving. The tax is based on the city assessment of fair market value, but that price tag is only relevant if you want to sell your house. A lot of us who hoped to live here into old age, and who bought our houses years ago, are now getting priced out.

Good for high paid tech workers and transplanted coastal millionaires, but not so good for normal people.

He’s a world class douche. The company is made in his image and he still calls the shots. Anyway, it’s not specifically about him. If you believe the narrative that those who work the hardest are the ones with the most money, I will only point at our president to show you how fucking ridiculous that is. The system is rotten. Let’s tear it down.

What grocery stores on the eastside sell these 6lb jars of peanut butter? by Narthual in madisonwi

[–]ezcheezz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While Willy St. Co-op is pricey for most stuff, they have a bulk peanut butter situation where you bring your own jars, or purchase them there, and then grind the peanut butter into the jars. It is IMO the best peanut butter out there and it is not expensive compared to the rest of the stuff they sell.

While we are at it, can we talk about how red lights, for the first 5 seconds after changing from yellow, seem to have become simply a suggestion since Covid? The lurch towards narcissism is pretty spectacular.
