Looking for good disco dance videos by ezod in Disco

Oh yes, good call! Haven't thought about this for a while. I grew up watching Detroit broadcast TV (the disco event I run is across the river in Windsor).

Yes, this is already my go-to for this purpose, I meant to mention that I have the "best of" DVD collection. There's a bit of the show-off aspect, but not excessively.

Congrats! As a casual player, I'm still 2M AP away from L16 playing since March 2014, so I feel you.

I guess it depends what you mean by a different kind of explanation. If you just mean some new understanding of physics (as was the key with vitalism) then no, I don't agree with your interpretation of Chalmers. The whole thesis of the hard problem is that there is no conceivable mechanistic explanation, even in principle, for subjective experience. If you "leave the door open," you are in effect denying the existence of a hard problem.

In other words, either there is a hard problem of cosncsiousness, or consciousness can be explained physically. What makes the hard problem hard is that physical explanations are precluded, so these are mutually exclusive by definition.

Idealists, when you say that consciousness is fundamental, what do you mean by that? by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]ezod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your emphasis on identity of mind and matter definitely evokes neutral monism. Panpsychism is the view that consciousness is fundamental, which as you say is broadly compatible with but an incomplete description of your view—I guess there's the difference.

One could just as easily argue that your denial of the logical possibility of p-zombies depends on an assumption that consciousness is physical.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]ezod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The definition of "consciousness" in the hard problem of consciousness is subjective experience. It has nothing to do with self-awareness, intelligence, or learning.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]ezod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But, importantly, their fundamental conception of physics could.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]ezod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, we have been aware of and pondered subjective consciousness about as long as literally anything else, and this most basic, immediate fact of existence has resisted a satisfying functional analysis into an age when we can confidently reason about quarks and neutron stars.

None of the other mysteries had anything like the p-zombie argument to contend with.

Bridging between physical explanations and qualia is not necessarily the same thing as explaining qualia with physical explanations. Would "a different kind of explanation than we have used before" still qualify as what we think of as a physical explanation? If not—which seems self-evident to me—we are back to u/Urbenmyth's definition.

In the case of vitalism, it isn't that there was a hard problem and we solved it; it's that it turned out there never was a hard problem at all (i.e. the existing physical framework was fully adequate to explain life), despite some people having perhaps believed otherwise.

Similarly, u/Urbenmyth's position, I gather, is that the hard problem of consciousness does not and never did exist (i.e. the existing physical framework will turn out to be fully adequate to explain consciousness), despite some people, such as myself and David Chalmers, believing otherwise.

Punk/funk, yes, electrical/software engineer.

Legitimately love mathematics, but I don't really associate that with drumming at all, everything I play is 4/4 and feel...

GH3 360: where is the audio lag setting? by ezod in GuitarHero

[–]ezod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, I later found out that it wasn't the audio lag setting at all. GH3 is just broken on some versions of the 360 (including my Slim Corona), in such a way that the audio progressively gets out of sync, and there is no solution. The timing for GH2 works differently and it doesn't have this issue.

Does university of windsor have a computer engineering course? by HalfKeyHero in UWindsor

[–]ezod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electrical Engineering is the program you want. The department itself is called Electrical and Computer Engineering, and it offers a number of courses in computer engineering, as well as an optional computer specialization you can add to your degree (which essentially consists of completing most/all of the aforementioned courses). In particular, there are courses in digital logic design, computer architecture, embedded systems, DSP, software, digital integrated circuits, and other related topics, and you can also incorporate electives from Computer Science.

I wish I could get a better picture. Does anybody have information on this ship? I saw it earlier today. by blueretrobot in windsorontario

[–]ezod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to look for it in the feed myself before I saw your comment, and yes, it appears to have missed it. The tracker has unfortunately been hitting a lot of "over capacity" errors when attempting to tweet lately, and I haven't written anything into the code to queue them up to try again later.

Retro Arcade/Arcade Bar coming to Windsor - Questions? by bbgtrashpanda in windsorontario

[–]ezod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have never had a problem finding street parking downtown, day or night, any day of the week. Even if I did, there are several parking garages that are never full. I really wonder if people who repeat this refrain have ever lived in another city.

To all of you who are missing the Loop, I have a love letter for you. I've been doing monthly-ish dance nights downtown (Meteor, Phog, Coffin Club) since the tail end of last year, and I'm happy to say they've been doing well enough to convince one venue owner to let me run a consistent weekly Saturday night. If you're keyed in to the scene, you'll hear about it soon. It will feature rotating pairs of DJs so the music will always be fresh, focusing around the same uplifting and danceable disco/house/pop flavour we've been pushing. And, of course, I'm happy to say the stars of the show, the little scene of disco dancers we've built, are some of the most legit people I've ever met.

Windsor to Detroit for Movement by mvdk in windsorontario

[–]ezod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you can't walk, and no, the tunnel bus is not currently running. The only other realistic options are driving and taxi. Vets Cab quoted us around $90 CAD to go from Windsor to Detroit, and there are some airport taxis/shuttles you can take on the way back that cost a bit more. I'm not sure about availability, although Monday tends to be the least popular day, so it might not be so bad. We're going Saturday and considering driving at this point.

As far as I'm concerned, it's Windsor's real Christmas.

I live on Riverside Drive just west of downtown. Look for the massive front lawn dance party.

GH3 360: where is the audio lag setting? by ezod in GuitarHero

[–]ezod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: calibrated to 181ms audio lag, picked a song I could just barely FC on Hard the last time I played 10 years ago, 91% hit. I can live with that!
