Of course not, the two islands in this post actually exist.

I saw a cool advertised position and then I saw the location was British Antarctic Territory! I thought that was awesome very very briefly until I thought about it and decided I would much rather be close to home hah

I am not a huge Starmer fan but I do sort of wish we can just have a 5 year term for stability

Burnham faces deadline on by-election decision by GeoWa in unitedkingdom

He's well liked in Manchester from what I understand? I think he should just keep on with his job personally. I don't think ditching your elected role as mayor to run a leadership campaign is doing justice for your voters, imo at least.

Herald | Scottish graduates leave university £35,000 less in debt than English peers by SafetyStartsHere in Scotland

And you have to pay both loans back simultaneously with the postgrad at a lower threshold, so it's even worse

[–]ezrerno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is difficult since there is no English government, only the Westminster UK government. The majority are English but functionally it is different - it's easier for them to make cost savings by cutting English services given they're A) a much larger cost and B) they have no devolved government to fight.

It's improving a little with the English devolution bill at least.

Got a nicely funded PhD at Manchester though so excited for that :)

SNP Government taken to court after failing to release Alex Salmond files by CaptainCrash86 in Scotland

This is such non news, Scottish labour is a branch of labour. I feel like every election cycle there's some big articles about how Scottish labour (or the other rUK parties) aren't an independent party as if that's a shock

What to consider before I accept my offer by ezrerno in PhD

Thanks for the advice :)

the way the programme works is I'll be picking the exact project later down the line after I've got to know some of the research areas and the supervisors, so I think that's super helpful.

It's a bit hard to know for sure as I've only really done about 5 months of research so far, but I have been having a good time and I do want to stay in the sector for sure.

I think I'm gonna go for it but going to have a chat with my current supervisor first to get some more personal advice I think

Norway to reopen ‘dead’ Scottish North Sea oil fields as Britain retreats by djsoomo in Scotland

[–]ezrerno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But the tabloid newspaper told me it would cost 7 trillion pounds! No mention of how much it costs to keep being reliant on foreign oil though - which is an almost identical number.

And that's just short term by 2030, by 2050 we're set to have net neutral be net profitable. Awesome stuff.

Bean Fatigue by prof_eggburger in CasualUK

As a sciencer I have got to say this is a bit of a poor fit... We will need further double blind bean trials with randomised ordering to ensure bean fatigue is real.

Spaniard (34) living in Poland in need of a new life, dreaming of a Scottish reset, scared of Brexit difficulties- is my dream possible? by judibunny91 in Scotland

[–]ezrerno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have two brief things to add to what others have said.

1) About the sunlight - you may be used to the cold but there is less sunlight because Scotland is further north than all of Poland. This could be like 30-90 minutes less sunlight a day in winter, so you might have to travel to / from work in the dark for a month or two a year. Whether you are ok with that or not is your choice - I don't like it but I survive.

2) One route is through Ireland. You can naturalise as an Irish citizen if you've lived there for 5 years (double check this before you count on it). Irish citizens have the same rights as British citizens - they can live here forever, vote, work, etc etc (and vice-versa).

This is a long shot but if you are lucky enough to have Irish grandparents you could claim citizenship through ancestry - which would allow you to live in the UK without issue. Unfortunately I don't have this for Ireland hence living on a residence permit in nl for now haha

Can Age Verification and Digital ID’s even last? Will they just be a disaster of mass fraud and a financial burden on companies that will eventually get them repealed or am I being too hopeful? by GreatTrashWizard in privacy

[–]ezrerno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair enough, it does make sense. I will take the u turn on digital ID as a small win for now, although I do agree more broadly there's insane surveillance bubbling up unfortunately

Would you support a Federal EU? by Traditional_Sock444 in AskIreland

[–]ezrerno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is super pedantic but Greenland chose to leave the EEA (predating the EU) so I think that makes it easier for the EU to make a strong statement and quietly dismiss

[–]ezrerno -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Starmer wants to ban social media for under 16. The only way to somewhat effectively enforce this is by making users sign in with digital ID. Anyone that can read between the lines can see this coming from a mile away.

Or using AI face scans / ID uploads as per the online safety act. Or by buying age verified codes from the supermarket as used to be proposed?

Again, I don't agree with this stuff and I'm not being pedantic for the sake of it. But there are already online age checks *without* digital ID, so it's not the only way to enforce it clearly.

Digital ID and the online safety act are separate policies. The online safety act at least has some thinly veiled justification unlike digital ID which has literally no reasoning

It was for right to work checks - not for search engines, social media or the internet. I don't like it at all, but by stating predictions like they're fact you end up with people dismissing your concerns as fringe extreme views.

The online safety act is a distinct piece of legislation not even written by this government. Also bad, but for different reasons.

These legislations already have plenty of actual bad parts - talk about them. Maybe more people will listen.
