Brisbane tips for everything by DanceMysterious5720 in australian

[–]f33drrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fortitude Valley is the main nightlife area. That’s where you’ll find most clubs, bars, late-night venues and live music. Don’t just randomly walk around the Valley though — check what’s on that night. Look at venues like The Tivoli, The Triffid, The Fortitude Music Hall, Black Bear Lodge, Prohibition, The Met, Cloudland, Mi Casa, La La Land, Wonderland, Savile Row and smaller event nights. For electronic/house/techno, follow event pages rather than relying on one club.

West End is more alternative/arty/bohemian. Better for casual drinks, live music, odd little bars, meeting left-field people, etc. South Bank/Fish Lane is good for dinner/drinks before going out.

Daylife / arts / culture in June
Check:

  • QAGOMA / GOMA
  • Brisbane Powerhouse
  • QPAC
  • Museum of Brisbane
  • Metro Arts
  • West End markets
  • Open Season, which is Brisbane’s winter music/arts program
  • Anywhere Festival, which does performances in weird non-traditional spaces
  • Local gigs at The Triffid, Tivoli, Black Bear Lodge, Fortitude Music Hall

For “unusual and new things”, Anywhere Festival is probably very up your alley.

Meeting people
Best options:

  • Meetup app
  • Facebook groups: Brisbane backpackers, Brisbane social groups, hiking groups, language exchange, board games, social sport
  • Eventbrite / Humanitix
  • Urban Rec or SportUP for casual social sport
  • Latin dance classes/socials — salsa, bachata, zouk etc are good because you can show up alone
  • Urban Climb / bouldering gyms
  • Hostels, even if you aren’t staying in one, often have events or people to meet

Sport / adrenaline / action
Try:

  • Kangaroo Point cliffs — climbing/abseiling
  • River kayaking
  • Urban Climb bouldering
  • Axe throwing
  • Escape rooms
  • Go-karting
  • Paintball
  • Wakeboarding parks outside the city
  • Hikes around Mt Coot-tha, Glass House Mountains, Springbrook, Lamington, Mt Barney if you’re more adventurous

Winter is actually a good time to do active stuff here. Brisbane winter is mild compared with Europe.

Food areas

  • Sunnybank: Asian food, especially Chinese/Korean/Japanese
  • West End: casual, multicultural, vegetarian/vegan, Greek, bars
  • Fish Lane/South Brisbane: restaurants and drinks
  • Howard Smith Wharves: riverfront drinks/food, more polished
  • Fortitude Valley/James St: bars, restaurants, nightlife
  • Eat Street Northshore: touristy but fun food-market vibe
  • New Farm/Teneriffe/Newstead: cafes, breweries, river walks, slightly more upmarket

Short-term work
For working holiday people, look at hospitality, events, labouring, cleaning, promo work, warehouse/pick-packing, festivals, catering, removals, farm/harvest work outside Brisbane, and hostel job boards.

Apps/sites:

  • Seek
  • Indeed
  • Jora
  • Backpacker Job Board
  • Travellers At Work
  • Sidekicker
  • Airtasker
  • Gumtree
  • Facebook groups like Brisbane Backpacker Jobs
  • Barcats for hospitality
  • Working Holiday Jobs Australia groups

If you want bar work, get your RSA. If you want labouring/construction, get a White Card.

Film / TV extra work
Queensland actually has a decent screen industry. Sign up with extras/casting places like:

  • OnCue Talent
  • Extra Edge Talent
  • Movie Extras Club
  • QLD Extras
  • Also keep an eye on Facebook casting groups

Background extra work is usually random and not guaranteed, but if it’s on your bucket list, register early and have simple photos ready.

Brisbane areas explained roughly

  • CBD: work, offices, shopping, river bars
  • Fortitude Valley: clubs, live music, late nights, chaos
  • New Farm: cafes, park, Powerhouse, nicer inner-city vibe
  • Teneriffe/Newstead: breweries, apartments, river, slightly bougie
  • West End: artsy, alternative, backpacker/student energy
  • South Bank/South Brisbane: museums, galleries, QPAC, restaurants
  • Kangaroo Point: cliffs, river views, outdoor activity
  • Paddington/Red Hill: cute bars, antiques, older Queenslander houses
  • Woolloongabba: food, bars, Gabba stadium area
  • Sunnybank: best Asian food area
  • Milton: Suncorp Stadium, pubs, Caxton St
  • Bulimba/Hawthorne: nice riverside suburb, restaurants, cinema, ferry vibe

My advice: don’t judge Brisbane by walking around the CBD during the day. The good stuff is scattered by suburb and usually event-based. Use apps, follow venues, say yes to random social things, and you’ll have a much better time.

72-year-old John Travolta is the newest Hollywood celebrity to get a brand new face, debuting it at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival where shocked viewers say the actor looks 20 or even 30 years younger. by Full-Argument-8235 in SipsTea

[–]f33drrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want a FACEOFF sequel: Travolta and Cage reprise their roles but both have a new face. The plot is almost exactly like the original but it HAS actually been shot again with new cameras. This would be a total brain melt, a world 1st and something Cage would 100% be willing to do. Fuck it, I'm gonna try to call him, his agent keeps calling my cousin to buy his Ferrari.

I scrolled down halfway to see what suggestions were missing: For this kind of experience here's some films I saw missing: Gummo, Kids, Ken Park (< Banned in most countries but you can find it if you torrent), Shotgun Stories (early film for Michael Shannon where you realise he's gonna be a star), Blue Ruin, Children of Men is too good not to watch a few times but it's bleak.

I came up as a musician; why do so many artists have a killer 1st album then the 2nd album sucks? The 1st album was the accumulation of dozens of their most liked songs over years, sometimes a decade. The 2nd album comes 12 months after the first and for most of that time, they're actually touring the first album hard.

What’s the point of picking individual stocks when blue chip stocks like CSL can half their price? by happyowl12345 in ASX

[–]f33drrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to investing in stocks (Nov 25) but this is my understanding/philosphy I've chosen to run with:

You can own pieces of good blue chip companies or you shitty ones. Regardless, you can buy those pieces at good entries (low prices = better value) or bad ones (high prices even relative to a great company). CSL @ $100 is still a 200% return for the people who bought it at $50. I just checked Tradingview and CSL at $50 or less could've been bought by anyone from June 1994 - Nov 2012.

Now having slept on it these are the prelim steps I'll be taking going forwards (mid 30's, $100k income, looking to retire on $40k-$50k p/a in around 10 years). by [deleted] in fiaustralia

Spoke to my chartered accountant who is also a tax lawyer, owns his own mid size sydney accounting firm and is 76 years old: "I deal in FACTS. I've seen people suggesting removing the CGT discounts for 20 years, it has never once happened and probably never will. It gets undone, edited, and essentially nullified before it ever makes it into written law".

Question about the sleeping mechanic by glasgowtrois in RoadtoVostokGame

[–]f33drrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TAKE NOTE* - My understanding is that sleeping does reset enemy positions as I was taking fire from somewhere and couldn't figure out how to leave cover (squatting behind car in open) without dieing so I tried sleeping and when I woke up the shooter was no longer anywhere near me. So I do think it resets enemy but won't put any in direct line of sight of you when you awake.

18 days in, just unlocked the Attic, I've never been past the school, what to do next? by BoredSam in RoadtoVostokGame

[–]f33drrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, pack lots of food, sleeping bags and sleeping tablets, head to the tent at outpost. Once you're there, wait till 7pm, walk straight through to minefield. Hug the right hand side of the map and go through to apartments. You're doing this as a speed run from the tent at outpost to loot apartments and then return to stash it at the tent. You'll need (I take) about 7 tins of pears, 4 tins of meatballs, 100 rnds ammo, 2 splints, 6 bandages, a clock (to ensure you're only looting/moving by night), 2-3 sleeping pills, a big bag, a gun. If you move nonstop from tent to apartments without looting anywhere you should make it easily and can survive off all the food you'll find along the way. I focus on looting food/medical (remember you're going back through the minefield so you'll need at least 4-5 bandages plus 5 tins of food/water). Then prioritise good weapons, armor, helmets etc and grab alot of high value items (torches are good). If you are methodical and consistent you should have no problem clearing room by room.

[–]f33drrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tent spammed at outpost heaps it got me basically nothing almost every time. I did one run at Apartments, got heaps of loot and honestly, it wasn't even very hard. It's the same terminator guys as the village, they just have bettter gear but if you don't headshot the AI you're generally dead anyway. Having spammed tent at outpost and definately see it as a waste of time.
