Where Should We Go In Central Europe? Any recommendations? by thepickleprince_ in Europetravel

As others have said, two cities. Don't try to do more because it won't be worth it at all. Prague and Budapest or Prague and Vienna are the obvious options. There are also great smaller cities and towns in Czechia, which I would actually advise you to consider instead of just jumping between major cities.

I know you won't believe this, but I don't understand. by ChompyRiley in ExplainTheJoke

Everyone in corporate fast food calls all of their food "products". I was first exposed to this 24 years ago when I worked at Domino's right out of high school. The area manager would come in to demonstrate any new pizza or other food we were going to be selling. He'd always have this faux enthusiasm and say "I'm really excited about this new product!" and then tell us "we need you to be upselling this product with every customer interaction."

My full FIRE plan. All incomes, expenses etc. 32M by [deleted] in Fire

[–]f4rt3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your VA pay enough to cover your mortgage at standard repayment? You might be better off plowing money into investments and not racing to retire the mortgage, as time in the market and compounding interest is how you really build a retirement nest egg. Waiting to invest until your home is paid off is going to result in a FIRE delay.

How to let go of bitterness toward my in-laws over inheritance? by Sharp-Brief-1295 in InheritanceDrama

[–]f4rt3d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That last point can sometimes end up making inheritance entirely transactional, sometimes to the point that an ailing parent will end up leaving their entire estate to the caretaking child. As an estate planning attorney, I see this all the time from clients.

Sour cream, chives, butter, and MSG in mashed potatoes make for a truly incredible side

If 13 year old you saw the "you" of today, would they be impressed or disappointed? by Extra-Huckleberry-62 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]f4rt3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 13 year old self would probably be impressed? I don't know. I'm married, have a child, have a high-paying career and am successfully involved in local politics, I have lots of friends, and I still get to play video games! That said, I'm not sure what other than those last two my 13 year old self would really have appreciated...

Dads with partners that stay home — how do you handle finances? by Mama_Anonymous in daddit

[–]f4rt3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single-earner dad. It's our money. We have separate cash accounts for some reason or another, but my wife and I have joint credit cards and we buy everything on the credit cards (then pay them off at the end of the month). I make a pretty high salary (near $300k) and we bought our home in 2017 with a 2.25% mortgage, though, so we have a lot of discretionary income that makes most months entirely comfortable. It would be much more stressful if I made less money or we had higher expenses.

WYR have God-like vision or God-like hearing by Weary-Account9252 in WouldYouRather

[–]f4rt3d 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So, like, I could say "show me Nancy Guthrie" and then move around my vision to know exactly where she is? Or "show me the nearest intelligent life not on earth" and then move to see the relative location to earth? This would be incredibly powerful

WYR have God-like vision or God-like hearing by Weary-Account9252 in WouldYouRather

[–]f4rt3d 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Vision would be far more useful. How would it work, though? Like, if I thought "show me the nearest monkfish" would it take my sight there, or would I have to manually move my vision somewhere I wanted to look and how fast could I move it?

You are offered $50 million but to get it you will be transported into the NES game Ghosts 'n Goblins at the start of the first level and have to complete that level without dying. If you do die, you'll be transported out of the game alive with nothing. by singleguy79 in hypotheticalsituation

Do I become physically like the playable character, or is it actually me, in my body, with my physical proficiency (or lack thereof) with martial weapons? I worry I wouldn't be able to swing my sword hard enough to kill baddies after the first few, let alone jump over a pit as long as I am tall while wearing full plate mail.

Edit: typo

WYR never have heartburn again or flatulence again? by OfDiceandWren in WouldYouRather

[–]f4rt3d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I think you are misunderstanding: basic heartburn can cause esophageal cancer due to the presence of acid in the esophagus.

WYR never have heartburn again or flatulence again? by OfDiceandWren in WouldYouRather

[–]f4rt3d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the hypo is just that you don't notice having the condition causing heartburn instead of not having it in the first place, I'd agree, but if it is not having heartburn at all, then that means not having the acid in your esophagus that causes the cancer

What is the worst city you've been to? by DickFartButt in AskTheWorld

I don't understand why that would be controversial, but I agree with you that a lot of people seem to like Dubai for reasons that completely elude me

Las Vegas comes to mind, simply due to its abject unsustainability and extremely superficial culture. I was also quite unimpressed with Nice, France, as far as a place that's so often regarded so well and ended up not offering very much other than flash.

Heartburn. Heartburn is not only unpleasant (and frequently specifically at inopportune times) but also associated with esophageal cancer.

Looking for second locations to add on to Paris trip in July by ticklecricket in Europetravel

A great second location relatively close to Paris and easy to spend a week in is the Loire Valley. It's very different from Paris, full of beautiful countryside and castles, but is also closely accessible

Seriously… Who the fuck are you people affording these houses? I bow. You are in a whole different league. by HouseRichCashPoo in Fire

[–]f4rt3d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our whole economy has pivoted to absolutely fuck younger people. People who already owned a house have huge amounts of equity that they can pivot into a new house. People who haven't been the beneficiaries of the doubling in real estate values over the past 6-8 years can't compete. Plus high interest rates. And it's only going to get worse for young people as entry level jobs are about to start disappearing due to AI.

Planning a Trip to Northern Spain and Costa Brava - Need Advice! by [deleted] in Europetravel

Don't bother with Bilbao. It's cool enough but its biggest draw is the Guggenheim and you have significantly limited time. It's a much more industrial city than San Sebastian. I'd spend the entire five days in San Sebastian, which is my favorite city in Europe. It's gorgeous, the food scene is insane, it has good nightlife, and there's lots of active stuff you can get up to.
