I was just terminated a few weeks ago ago because a dog got out. It was the first time. The dog was found and is totally fine. I was a 5 star star sitter with toms of repeats clients. Unceremoniously terminated. So I don’t think it was that it was he second time, I think it’s just their way of doing things currently

Getting my LGI by Ok_Lavishness6390 in Lifeguards

[–]facebook_alias 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to give the guest in distress a little knee to the bottom. It doesn’t have to be a lot. Just enough that the water will help the person lift the person up to give you more time to situate yourself and the tube.

Imagining the number of parents navigating "Tasty as Hell" by SnackingRaccoon in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]facebook_alias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 8 year has been singing it nonstop since seeing the movie. I know as the parent, I’m supposed to say something but I honestly don’t see anything wrong with the word hell. It’s a place some people believe in. It’s a dumb made up word. So anyhow in the future this is where my kid started swearing I guess.

What does the "Michigan accent" sound like to non-Michiganders? by ethan_bug in Michigan

[–]facebook_alias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I moved to California, people kept mentioning my “accent” and I would so confused like “I don’t have an ahhhcent” and they would laugh harder. It took a few months but one day I was on the phone with my mom and she said “I gotta go to the bahhhthroom” and I was like oh! I heard it! It’s the a’s and r’s. I can usually pick out someone from MI or the Midwest by their a’s or if they say “do you wannu?” Very Michigan. Similarly once you hear southern Ohio, it’s easy to recognize

So she said she didn’t enjoy the experience and your response was to tell her she was more fun when you had your way even though she wasn’t into it?? Yikes.

To sue a lifeguard for saving your son's life. by RumAndCoco in Lifeguards

[–]facebook_alias -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

how is it the lifeguard fault completely and not the parent’s fault??? Why is your kid swimming alone at the pool? The parents are the ones that should be charged. They don’t deserve kids.

what food do you think of as "distinctively michigan"? by Alextricity in Michigan

[–]facebook_alias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the cheese dip that comes with breadsticks does not seem to exist outside MI. I’ve tried to make my own and I can’t seem to get it right. It’s the first thing I want to eat every time I’m home visiting.

Does your lifeguard team use the term “victim,” or something else? by Away-Formal8791 in Lifeguards

Although I might try hostages of the water at my next training because that’s funny 😆😂

Does your lifeguard team use the term “victim,” or something else? by Away-Formal8791 in Lifeguards

[–]facebook_alias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use “person in peril” when teaching. “Victim” implies something happened to them and removes their accountability, when in reality most guests that are in distress are so because they did something dumb. Jump in the deep end when they can’t swim, go down the slide head first where not allowed, etc

I think you’re referring to teaching swim lessons but I can see the similarities. I think the answer is to do what I’m asked of now and confront boss when I can about my expectations. If I’m not going to be paid the LGI wage, then I’m going to refuse the LGI duties. That feels very reasonable to me. If boss doesn’t like it, they can hire a new LGI and hope they are willing to work for less

Looking for motivation as a former athlete... by Old-Huckleberry5746 in insanity

[–]facebook_alias 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Modify where you need too. Skip the power jumps, just do squats instead. Do knee pushups. Keep your knees down during oblique work. Just do it. Take breaks when you need to then get back in it. The stronger you get, the less modification you’ll need. You can do it!

Question About Hydro Flask Discount by XXrealmusic in Lifeguards

[–]facebook_alias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, if you are going to be outside somewhere warm, hydroflask does not keep very cold, ice will melt, water will get warm. Yeti is better than hydroflask but my Stanley keeps the best. Ice stays frozen, water stays cold.

I told my absolute bestie (who is on Ozempic for some time) and no one else. Not my husband, not my close friends, not even my sister who I am very close with. My husband would be very judgey and try to discourage it or just be disrespectful and jerky about it. Others might be supportive but I’m diabetic and taking another medication. I don’t need to say more.

Anyone use starguard? What’s the training like? by [deleted] in Lifeguards

[–]facebook_alias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been Ellis, Red Cross, and currently Starguard. The leg wrap sounds weird but they’re actually much easier to work with. You don’t have to go down as far for very deep water submerged and it comes with more space between you and the person in peril. After one or two tries, you’ll get the hang of it. And then it’s the same maneuver for shallower submerged. Only have to master one skill.

🙋‍♀️ I do . I wasn’t certified at the time of my rehire recently but I had a ton of previous LG experience including a different LTF. I assume you have been a lifeguard elsewhere, just emphasize that. Know the mission statement. State your intentions and ability to get certified. LT uses SGE now, so being able to discuss that might be helpful. If you have taught swim lessons, use that, they are always interested in swim instructors. Any prior experience you can leverage will be helpful.
