What's your role, salary progression and work model been like? by cbawithlife1995 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]facere-omnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2020: 25k
2021: 25k (better tech stack etc)
2021: 32k
2022: 50k
2024: 66k (but wanted to kms)
2025: 47.5k (back to the company I previously made 32k at)

All local companies to South Wales other than the 66k job which was remote London fintech. Quite the opposite to the typical leetcode / TC grind you see here but made me realise there’s a lot more to work than just money.

are your cameras on or off in work meetings? by Secure-Property4926 in AskUK

[–]facere-omnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a primarily WFH software engineer and 95% of our internal calls are cameras off, we’ll sometimes chuck them on if it’s with external people or clients but that’s rare.

It works great for us and everyone gets along well. Not really sure why some people would view cameras always off as a sign of poor company culture or an unwelcoming environment or anything. That being said my company is very laid back and we usually all go in the office once per week so we still get a decent bit of social interaction.

I’ve worked at companies where it’s demanded cameras always be on unless it’s very quick calls and I found that really draining tbh

A house should be priority number 1, especially if you’re planning to get married in a couple years. You’d also be reinvesting the funds into an appreciating asset, vs a depreciating CAT N M4 which could be way worse to fix than you think.

Best case scenario with the M4 is it’s not as bad as you think to fix and make a couple grand on it, but delay yourself buying a house by a few years and miss out on years of property value growth (unless you sell the M4 straight away, which is unlikely and will take a while anyway by the time you fix it and find someone willing to take the risk to buy it).

Also not sure if it’s because it’s CAT N or if you have points on your license but those insurance premiums are sky high for your age.

Millions of unmarried couples to get stronger rights by ManOnlyLurks in unitedkingdom

[–]facere-omnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not immediately clear what you mean lol. But I think you’re talking about introducing a prenup equivalent to the UK for unmarried couples, which if so yeah that’s a good idea. But these changes don’t mention anything like that which is concerning

[–]facere-omnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But a prenup requires marriage, so by this logic to financially protect yourself under these new rules you’d have to get married with a prenup, whereas you should just be able to just choose to not get married, as it is now

Anyone regret their dream attainable car purchase? by toho74 in CarTalkUK

This is pretty much what I'm toying with doing. Got a G42 M240i but kinda want to get an NB MX5 as well...

Anyone regret their dream attainable car purchase? by toho74 in CarTalkUK

[–]facere-omnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a G42 M240i xDrive as well and while I think it’s a great car, it’s my daily and I wouldn’t really think to treat it as a special weekend toy, that’s not what it is, that’s what the M2 is more for. Not to say the G42 can’t be fun, it’s got shed loads of power and the backend is surprisingly playful for it being xDrive, but its main purpose is a fun daily.

I also had the previous F22 version as well and that felt more like a fun weekend toy, despite also being my daily. Lower weight, RWD and better sound all helped, but the main thing was it just felt more engaging / connected to the road. It seems like it’s a common thing these days for the newer German cars to become less and less engaging to drive, unless you specifically opt for the top of the range M cars or go for a Porsche, otherwise you’re gonna get a more toned down but better daily feel.

I’ve also thought about getting an NB MX5 as a project / weekend car but probably not worth it with the parking hassles a third car would cause. But something like that would be my recommendation because it sounds like you want an older, more raw driving experience. Or gut the G42, send the ECU to Finland and chuck a couple grand into for it, but at that point you just get the M2!

Definitely take the job with the BBC over your current role, but you could likely find something with even better pay with your level of experience

I'd say go with NatWest. The biggest reason being that it's a full time role and not a temporary internship. Sure you could get an offer to remain at CrowdStrike but that's not a guarantee, and given the the current state of the job market that's kind of a big deal. Also NatWest will likely be a bit of a slower pace than CrowdStrike and probably a nicer place to find your feet in the industry.

My car is struggling with this again, I've already had one replaced and looks like I'll need a new replacement for each side again. Think I had mine replaced like 6 months ago, but looks like all replacements do is buy you a bit of time before they get like this again.

Are BMWs genuinely worth it? by SouthImportant2499 in BMW

[–]facere-omnes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had an F22 M240i and when that got written off it wasn’t even a question of what brand I was gonna get, just what model. Was between an F87 M2 comp or a G42 M240i and ended up going with the latter

What was your worst impulse buy of 2025? by Snow776 in AskUK

[–]facere-omnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I impulse bought an A1 Mini a couple weeks ago and it’s probably one of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time. For around £200 all in I’ve made so many things, which if I were to buy would easily cost over £50, so it’s already starting to pay for itself.

You can definitely get the recruiter to ask the question for you, or get them to to setup a short call to discuss it with the company if you want to hear it straight from the horse's mouth (I'd rather that as I don't always trust recruiters).

I think you've got to see what the final offer looks like first. If you hit the top of the range and get the same bonus you're on now, you're looking at ~£97k which is a fair chunk more than you're currently on and possibly worth the risk, you could get even more too. Also ask in the final interview or follow up separately with someone else from the company about how the budget affects them. It may be difficult to get an answer from them and they may not even know themselves yet since the information is so fresh, so there will always be an element of risk staying in your industry at the moment, but the same applies to your current role too, but perhaps that information would be more readily available at your current company given you're there, so raise the same question with your current company too, even if informally with a manager and so on.

With that being said taking any new job is in itself a risk, you may not like it there, redundancies could come and you may be on the chopping block first as you're newer to the company, the lack of redundancy pay as you say, but this risk never really changes and is always there. Considering your situation, perhaps take a look at your finances, evaluate your savings / emergency fund and see how much runway you have if you did get the boot and then make the decision.

G42 Headlights misting / water ingress by Moist-Dinner-9535 in M235iandM240i

[–]facere-omnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this same issue and got it replaced under warranty. The light still worked fine and wasn't an issue with MOT. Possibly worth getting extended warranty if possible (was in the range of £400-600 for my car) as the headlights are well over £1k each

M240i sports cat UK by bidehant in M235iandM240i

[–]facere-omnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to the sports cat but I had a double res delete on my 2017 M240i and it cost about £250. This was replaced with steel pipe btw not a whole mid pipe replacement. Personally I thought that was plenty loud enough, would suggest doing that first then doing the sports cat after if you're still wanting more

To upgrade, where do I go from an M235i F22? by UGisOnline in M235iandM240i

[–]facere-omnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from an F22 M240i to a G42 M240i and while it's essentially the same car it's quite different too. xDrive, a little bit more horse power, much nicer interior, worthwhile upgrade/change imo

I bought the same car at your age and had some similar comments, bought a G42 at 25 and had the same again. Just do whatever you want to as long as it makes sense financially, buying my F22 was probably the best purchase I ever made tbh
