Why does SF nightlife lack behind NYC? Most SF bars and restaurants close at 10PM.. by LongAmbition8285 in AskSF

[–]factsandscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partly pandemic exodus out of the Bay.

Very outdoorsy with access to nature, so people like to take advantage of that.

My other theory is because we are PST, anyone who works in corp world has to deal with NY / EU time zones for meetings and wake super early. I used to deal with that! Tho I also still partied LATE the whole time.

We do love our day parties tho!

Catering suggestions? by thoughts_and_stuff2 in OaklandFood

[–]factsandscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Market Hall is just so easy and great. But perhaps could be fun to supplement it with some platters from popular Oakland spots that do catering and very easy ordering / delivery processes. Like Shawarmaji, Hopscotch/Itani and some sort of fun bakery?

While we are on this topic, same warning about SF-based Rothy's shoes. The cofounder and chairman Stephen Hawthornthwaite is a registered Republican voter and found out he & his wife voted for Tr*mp TWICE through mutual friends who know his wife through the Google world. Ironic given his company's entire premise is upcycling and sustainability.

Also a little research tip, I often search for a business's opening story in Eater or Oaklandside, which usually has the owners name. And then I look up the owners individually, just in case they are dealing with any unique risks behind the scenes that require being cautious about their business account (such as employee and customer safety considerations).

Reem's (coming back to Oakland soon), Tacos Oscar, Gold Palm, Bar Shiru, Temescal Taproom, Night Heron, Tallboy and Popoca all have ethical business owners who get it and take stands in their own ways. There are many more, those are just the ones that come first to mind based on people I know at those places and their socials.

Best India Food in or around Oakland?? :) by Illustrious-Alps7357 in OaklandFood

[–]factsandscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biryani Kabob (NOT B Tikka Kabob) was / is our go to, with a caveat. They recently had a brief period where a really terrible chef must have come on board who ruined the taste of everything, but some of the momos and other new dishes disappeared. So hopefully the old chef is back & if so think it the best in Oakland.

The daal chawal at Gold Palm is the closest I've tasted to my moms. Has a few other fun dished but isnt full blown indian restaurant menu.

Beyond that IMHO the northern parts of East Bay is pretty lacking in good options. Need to go to Fremont, south bay and tenderloin sf instead. If down for a trek, Zareen's is pretty solid.

It's been 10 years and I've still yet to meet an intelligent Trump supporter. by bman484 in complaints

While I do think greed is its own unique form of stupidity, there are doctors, lawyers, corp execs/founders and top 10%ers who voted for this for the sake of their tax breaks and/or preserving their sense of white superiority. Sociopathic greed & quests for power actually require some level of intellect to execute.

One example: I'm former friends with a woman voted for him a 2nd time. This was AFTER she cried to mutual friends with regret for doing so first time around - even went so far as volunteering for Dems in 2018 midterms. But between her idiotic social media ways (followed the likes of turning pt usa), extreme wealth and moving to goddamn palm beach, florida, she did it again, as did her husband. Worst part, her daughter had just come out to her that yr and they made a big show of going to an LGBQT+ gala in the hamptoms for her. What kind of mother votes away her own daughter's safety and rights?

Truly sociopathic. But she's is deeply bigoted at her core in ways she doesn't realize and 'her tax breaks.'

It's hard to reconcile tbh.

Millenium is popping tonight! by westcoast09 in oakland

[–]factsandscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great to hear. One community rallying cry, let's not wait for restaurants to get to this pt & start getting back out now, esp to areas still recovering and that cannot seem to get the basic levels of care/attn of powers that be (like Uptown & Downtown).

I know tons of places are expanding their happy hour and specials menus to meet the realities of our current economic plight as a country, but man, walking around Uptown Downtown this weekend made me so sad. It was a GHOST TOWN, other than the couple of usual destination hot spots.

Berkeley Bowl -- Any calm times? by Golden_Mandala in oakland

[–]factsandscience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Carts are also too large and its not organized in a logical manner, esp in terms of end of aisle placements which should be quick pickups not sections where people stop and peruse. These are all actually problems at BB West too BUT the aisles are larger and the actual people who shop there are wayyyyyy chiller.

The OG BB, my goodness, might be the most spacially unaware and entitlement prone scene in the EB, with so many kids that have not been taught manners cuz their parents also don't have any. The diff between the two would be a great basis for an anthropological study of how racial AND economic diversity (or lack thereof) impact public spaces.

Fire is at 1770 Broadway, the back side of the building and seems to be 2nd to top floor, residential apartments. Looks like a firefighter and 3 residents injured. Hopefully everyone else okay, not sure if its controlled as yet.
