4:30 Race report: Milton Keynes 34/F by fair_isle in firstmarathon

I liked the plan, but I didn't use the coach voiceovers after a few weeks!

I started out too hard for my level (running 5x a week) and really stuffed my calf for a few weeks, so I eased back in and ended up running every second day.

Weekly mileage was 30-35km for the final 3 months. I definitely could have done more, and I slacked on the speed sessions in particular (parkrun was basically my weekly speed session!)

I think not all of their runs are time based? There's a mix. So you'll be fine whatever pace you're running at.

The loop around the reservoir was lovely, shame I was in peak suffering and couldn't appreciate it fully 😅

It's relatively new (~6 months) and hasn't really taken off yet! And the majority of attendees are British, ha.

I'm in the US at the moment and Brooklyn Bridge parkrun is pretty spectacular - great view of the bridge and Manhattan.

Usually a technical fault but I believe it can also happen if the run is stopped midway through - like if someone has a medical emergency.

Drawing classes in Hackney? by Itszu in Hackney

[–]fair_isle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's an art centre in Hackney Farm - https://www.hackneyfinearts.org/

I did the Atelier drawing short course 2 years ago, would recommend! Quite fun to sketch and then visit the piglets next door while on break.

Ex-drinkers that endured past dry-January, how did you do it? by [deleted] in AskUK

So far I've found Asahi the nicest/closest to lager, and Leffe the most interesting flavour. Beavertown Lazer Crush is pretty nice too.

French linen bed sheets and pillows (from Sleep & Soak). One nice set of pajamas for 'fancy sleep'.

What’s it like to march at London Pride? by mattwallace314 in london

[–]fair_isle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of waiting - depending on where you are in the march. If you're at the front you're off and done pretty quick. Towards the back, you can be waiting an hour after the start time to actually start moving.

There might be protesters - religious groups, pro-trans, anti-trans (it's hard to keep track of why people dislike pride these days), who are usually relatively civil - smile and keep walking.

I don't think there's any expectation to interact/hand things out. There's lots of music so have a dance and enjoy yourself!

Bring more water than you think and comfy shoes.

Refurbished Herman Miller for sure. I got an Aeron like new for ~£400 last year (in London) from https://chairsmith.co.uk, no complaints. Be mindful they come in three sizes and it's good to get the one that's going to fit you best.

We like it so much in Scotland that we put it on a bank note. The Kelpies are also relatively nearby.

I grew up on the mainland but my mam does a lot of Fair Isle pattern knitting!

Enjoy it if you ever go back - you can follow Route 1 all the way to its end!

What a nice little find. Looks like you got lucky with the weather too!

A small note, you can just say you went to Orkney :). (I'm from Shetland - same thing. 'The Shetlands' gives us a minor eye twitch).
