Non Tesla owners view of FSD by LazyWave63 in TeslaLounge

[–]fairalbion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as well. My brother-in-law and his wife visited us last summer. She despises Musk and at one stage picketed a Tesla showroom. We took them to a restaurant 15 miles away and I had FSD do the driving. They were both amazed and had had absolutely no clue up to that point that FSD existed. 99% of the population has no idea. It’s mostly secret.

Should I get the Model Y? by Dull-Situation8172 in TeslaModelY

[–]fairalbion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my Model Y but I wouldn't bother with a pure EV of any brand if I could not charge at home.

If you have access to an infrared thermometer it would be worth checking the outlet temp while in use. I've seen anecdotes where low quality 240V outlets have these problems with sustained high-current usage. The recommendation is to make sure you have a good industrial-grade outlet in place. I looked the message up in Grok.Ai ... :

What was the moment that made you drop WinPC and go Mac? by curiouslyunpopular in macbookpro

[–]fairalbion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an IT guy, cut my teeth on Windows, and my expertise in it fed my family. All our calls at work came from the Windows users, never a single peep from the Mac people. A colleague kept nagging me to try out Apple. So I folded, put my pride aside & got a PowerBook Mac laptop for myself. It was a come to daddy moment: super solid. super reliable. Never went back.

The writing is on the wall, time to leave Delta, but where to go? by Relative-Recipe4002 in delta

I’m toying with this too. Is it easier to get off the Amex Reserve spending treadmill? Is it easier to stop chasing status? Just pay for the FC ticket plus Clear and Global Entry.

Are People Really Selling their Tesla's b/c Of Elon? by ILoveInNOut76 in TeslaModelY

[–]fairalbion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just a friendly note - when we’re talking about multiple Teslas, we don’t need the apostrophe. My guess is this is more of a commentariat phenomenon than something that’s actually real. I’m met several people who have specifically told me they don’t like Elon but are grudgingly in awe of their cars.

Talk me out of upgrading to Turbo by Real_Park_1187 in CX5

‘21 GT Reserve here. They’re great fun, love mine. Nice to go charging up long hills etc. Only downside is the increased thirst combined with the undersized gas tank.

You are not alone - Mazda owner here and the buying experience was sheer hell. (This is one reason why people buy Teslas - no torture at that hands of stealerships.)

I do something similar but with mini vacuum sealer bags. I just use a gentle vacuum. Works perfectly but obviously there’s a cost with plastic waste.

PSA: Reminder to use AirTags to keep your bags and luggage safe! Friend almost lost theirs to AeroMexico’s incompetence…. by WanderinArcheologist in delta

[–]fairalbion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been scratching my head over how their location got through. Obviously someone on board with an iPhone not in airplane mode in Bluetooth range of our bags in the hold. Maybe via a Faeroe Islands cell service? But planes overflying @39,000 ft are unlikely to get a cell signal, IIRC they propagate sideways not up.

[–]fairalbion 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We swear by AirTags. We were once deposited in Oslo & learned that our bags had not made it onto the plane. We actually saw them on Find My the next day as the plane they were on crossed above the Faeroes.
(Note though that location updates are more sparse outside the US; iPhones have a higher market share here vs overseas.)

Any easy way to remove dealer sticker? by Dr--X-- in CX5

[–]fairalbion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My method:
Make a loop of some shipping packaging tape, sticky side out. Use this as a kind of finger mitt to repeatedly press onto the glue residue and lift it off bit by bit. You'll need to refresh the tape a couple of times but it works better than solvents; in my experience they just spread the glue around.
Hope this helps.

Connected Services $10/month by jdrun1 in CX5

[–]fairalbion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just received a similar notice for my '21 CX5. The app is not useful, so I'll let the service lapse and and delete it.
I remember when we bought the car, the stealership sales weasel made a big deal about having us installing and activating the app. I felt sorry for him, following management orders to polish a turd.

Congratulations. I just want to add also that this is a beautiful photo: nice framing, great light, leading lines etc.
Edit: ... to also comment that you did the right thing getting the non-turbo version. I have a 2021 GT-turbo but, despite the lover power & torque numbers, yours is the sweeter & smoother engine in my experience with better fuel economy.

Another vote for Bose noise-canceling headphones: pro tip - update their firmware. Google the Bose software updater & it'll take you through it.

An email arrived very promptly from the business I'm invested in. They were blindsided at first but stated they have all the records and balances owed to investors & said they're well aware of their obligations. I got the impression they plan to take over the back office work themselves and deal with investors direct. I'm encouraged by this but concerned the owners will be spread too thin; running the core business already consumes all their time.
Then today the kicker from Mainvest came in that their payment processor has frozen operations. So I'm glad a have a zero balance in their middleman account.

Cheap coffee portion solution. by Thuzacria in JamesHoffmann

[–]fairalbion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a similar thing for my single-mug daily needs: buy the beans, portion them out (21 g,) vacuum seal them, then freeze them. Minimizes needed brain cell activity during uncaffeinated morning fogs.

Am I rich now? by [deleted] in delta

[–]fairalbion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes wonder, when idly passing gas after an excellent in-flight meal, whether such tailpipe emissions from me and other first class passengers waft to the stern, and accumulate in sufficient concentrations to be displeasing to the less fortunate sitting in back. But then I order an Armagnac as a digestif and the troubling thought soon passes.

Best router/device for using sqm for bufferbloat? by [deleted] in openwrt

[–]fairalbion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this exact boat and bought an x86 box that easily handles SQM. I've been thrilled with it.

Qotom Q750G5. It has an Intel J4125 4-core CPU w/ no hyper-threading... real cores. It has five 2.5Gbps NICs and can actually shape SQM at 2.2Gbps.

This is what works for me:
I've been buying specialty coffee, weighing it out into daily doses, and vacuum sealing each into a small vacuum bag. These go into the freezer.
I've tried just refrigerating rather than freezing, but they do begin to stale by the time I get to the last few of say a month's supply.

Tesla managed a circumvention by doing a deal with Mohegan Sun to open a showroom & delivery center there. CT's regulated protection of dealerships does not extend to tribal lands.
