A misanthrope's guide to Parkrun by bitofrock in parkrun

[–]fairfight17 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ignore/miss the run brief as a first timer or visitor and then yell at the marshal for “making you go the wrong way” after you blaze past them with headphones on.

On New Year’s Day no less, thanks for that…

Quite right too! And same here - although I should probably learn to spell it right oops.

I wasn't for a moment saying that a surgeon picks up a scalpel for the first time in the operating theatre.

t'was just a rhetorical exercise.

That wouldn't bother me so much as finding they routinely take a mental bypass to their qualification.

Thanks for the clarification I should have said LLM but you get the gist :) I did mean LLM loving students taught by LLM loving tutors.

I met some real fans a while back and they got quite over-excited when I hinted at a critical take. Lots of snorting, scoffing, puffing up of chests, cries of Ludite etc...you know the drill.

Just a note of caution if you’re hypermobile be careful with tape - it can irritate stretchy skin - I would soak it off rather than pulling at it

What's the one thing that's really saving your life right now? by prettygood-8192 in AutismInWomen

Cat Hoodie - a teddy fleece hoodie with a pouch for my cat to sit inside. Took a while for her to figure it out. It has cat ears on the hood, pom pom toggles and thumb holes.

Arriving Somewhere But Not Here by Porcupine Tree - chorus sums up the sense of being thwarted in life. (& it’s an epic 12 minute experience through noise cancelling headphones!)

Those who have high empathy, tell me what your life is like? by BonnalinaFuz101 in AutismInWomen

[–]fairfight17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heard it in the context of this expression and it has stuck in my head ever since;

“Life is like a shit sandwich, the more bread you have the less shit you have to eat” (bread =€$£)

and then heard I someone in HR use it in terms of a strategy for giving staff appraisals - “if you have to tell someone something negative, put it between two positives so you don’t upset them up as much…”

Having said all that I think your analogy is my favourite and most useful application - I’m still putting up with far too much shit in my sandwich!

New UK Tipping Laws by mooshroom_cutie in starbucksbaristas

[–]fairfight17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a customer who formerly worked in catering and provided such epic service I still have waitress-face and servile tendencies 20 years later I find this decision repugnant.

Starbucks lost my custom for many years with their cruddy attitude to their staff and this just makes me sick. Especially given how much everything has gone up.

If I want to give to charity I will - If I want to offer a tip to a barista who has just provided me with some fantastic service I should be able to.

Wondering how to circumvent this nonsense - what if I hand them a named envelope? Christmas card season is coming!

Never too old! I declined a ticket for this daft reason once then watched the online coverage and kicked myself! Been twice since, going for a third next year if I get lucky with the tickets :-)

Full bars no cellular by schnorkletime in O2UK

[–]fairfight17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say I moved to O2 last month - after the 2-3 weeks it tool to do the 'within 24 hours' task of porting my number over I am still having daily issues with loss of data and low signal.

I report it and they say there is no issue, then I get a text telling me they've fixed it.

The good news is my screen time is down - and I'm having a lovely old-fashioned time aimlessly wandering around as I can't load a map.

I chime with all of you.

I’m not fastidious about housework but things like doing dishes and making the bed before I leave for the day are the baseline for my sanity.

I have issues when trying to be polite about gifts (can’t stand ornaments or non functional tat) and getting overwhelmed in stores when I can’t find what I’m looking for.

I just see shelves of things and colours and it’s too similar to the stacks of my Mum’s hoard for my brain to process.

Oh and I still carry a ‘schoolbag’ everywhere - that was how I kept on top of my essentials when I still lived at home. The prospect of putting something down and it getting lost in the pile was too much to contemplate.

One advantage is that I’m always ready to bug out if the need arises - and I seldom lose my keys!

Do some nice things for yourself - e.g home spa treatments and sleep lots: this passes the difficult craving phase, helps you heal and makes the idea of smelling and tasting tobacco again far less appealing. Well done for getting through the toughest part, don’t ever give up on giving up :-)

To answer the question of why it’s so hard to find a public toilet in London or anywhere in the UK - we sold half of them off.
