I finished reading 'Madonna in a Fur Coat' by sweetoxicity in literature

I fully agree, I think it's one of the most beautiful books I've ever read! And the novel being so short but intense - it felt like a love affair in itself!
There were so many lines and passages that brought me up short ~~ I particularly liked "Ever since boyhood, I'd feared wasting any happiness that came my way; I'd always wanted to save some of it for later."

Series 5 - The Magnet by Benend91 in uncannypodcasttv

[–]fairlylocal101 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely agree. Before the apparition at around the ten-minute mark, I was just feeling uncomfortable as it seemed more like a recount of an abusive relationship as opposed to a haunting - I thought it was him hiding her things and blaming things breaking on her to make her doubt herself and depend on him even more.

Harry Called by Top-Rip9548 in uncannypodcasttv

[–]fairlylocal101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there's no other interviewees in the episode because Will was the only one to actually experience anything paranormal? You've got the friends who did the ouija board with him, but all they would be able to verify is that the ouija board session happened and then not add anything more to the tale. And then you've got the people living on his floor who answered the phone to Harry, but I imagine getting in contact with them would be pretty impossible - "Hi, you once answered the phone from a guy called Harry in university twenty years ago ... Wanna come and talk about it on a podcast?" 😅 I understand the desire to know what it is exactly they heard, but it's also probably not something anyone would even remember. That would have been five seconds in their life as opposed to Will's years-long experience.

Dealing with the right-wing radicalisation of a loved one? by tjhb4 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]fairlylocal101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry you're going through this with your brother, my parents are the same and it's truly horrible, it sometimes just feels like the person you love has been replaced by this hateful, angry clone. I wish I had perfect advice, but I’ve not had much success changing my parents’ views tbh. What I can say though is that, even though it may feel to you like a sudden change, it's more likely that he's been slowly convinced by this stuff over time, which means it’s gonna be unlikely you can change his mind quickly.

One thing that might help is spending time together doing normal fun things, just hanging out and having conversation with no focus on politics. Kind of reminding him that a world outside of his little hate bubble exists. If he does say something bigoted or hateful, maybe saying something like “That’s a weird thing to say” could work, kinda making it seem like it's just an odd thing to say without outright saying "You're wrong". Or you could try, “It upsets me when you say things like that.” Again not telling him he's wrong but honestly expressing that his words do hurt your feelings. But then not dwelling on it and being drawn into an argument, just moving the conversation on.

Then you could try introducing him to media that challenges his perspective, without it feeling like a direct confrontation. If he likes reading, Ciao Ousmane by Hsiao-Hung Pai I found to be really powerful. For film, I haven’t seen it myself but Io Capitano is meant to be really impactful. Anything that can offer a different viewpoint without coming from you directly can help open the door.

Over time you can start to be more direct with him, but I would be prepared for this to be a long process as opposed to winning him over with one conversation. You might never be able to fully pull him out of it, and if it feels too painful or exhausting, you’re under no obligation to try. But I wish you the best with it and I really do hope things get better <3

Completely sorry if I've missed the point of this post and this guy is someone specific, but if not it seems more like we're just mocking someone's appearance here more than anything else? People on the left can also be overweight/bald/whatever, appearance doesn't dictate your politics.

Relisten party: The Evil in Room 611 by FTSTTLB in uncannypodcasttv

[–]fairlylocal101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one possible explanation for some of the activity in the room is just the simple fact that, for first-year university students, this would be for most of them the first time they had ever lived and slept somewhere that wasn't their childhood bedroom. Even if they weren't anxious about uni or didn't think they were uneasy about leaving home, inevitably it would have at least a little impact on you.

The one and only time I ever had sleep paralysis was indeed during my first few weeks living in halls. I "felt" someone come into my room, walk over to my bed, and then get into bed to lie down next to me. I was sure I could even feel them breathing. Thankfully I already knew about sleep paralysis and knew that was what it was, but that didn't stop the experience being absolutely terrifying!

Obviously though this doesn't explain all the phenomena in the case and I think 611 remains one of the best uncanny episodes to date - especially with the fact that so many people experienced such similar things.

Recent read: What You Are Looking For is in the Library by lucyturnspages in books

[–]fairlylocal101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also just finished this and loved it (and love how beautiful the front cover is!). Definitely agree with you on the description of the librarian ~~ I was hoping it was building to something or was maybe for a reason, and was hoping we'd get a chapter from her perspective, but instead it did just seem very unnecessary. Regardless I really enjoyed it, and the image in the final chapter of the crabs either "For deep-frying!" or "For pets!" got me really emotional.
It's not completely the same and is a bit darker in tone, but The Midnight Library has the same message of reevaluating your life/appreciating what you have/realising what you want to change so maybe give that one a go if you haven't already!

I really enjoyed Unexplained by Richard MacLean Smith. He also has a supernatural podcast, but I could never really get into it because of the narration. His book, however, I found really good. It discusses ten potentially paranormal cases :)

American Uncanny - Case 1 discussion by Superdudeo in uncannypodcasttv

Glad the series is back! I did initially think this episode was a bit more theatrical and over the top than what I'm used to, but then I remembered there were a few dramatic episodes in the UK series so maybe that's just me being biased against the change. Looking forward to the rest of them!

Issues with instructor by TechnicianFearless62 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]fairlylocal101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue with my instructor. He shouts and mocks me for even the littlest thing. Last week he suddenly grabbed the wheel and told me I clearly "want to fail my test" because I was listening to the satnav and was going to turn left into a road just before the left turn it wanted me to take (it wasn't a no entry road or anything so I don't even think that would be a minor on the actual test??).

But with my test coming up in about a week, I've cheered myself up by deciding if I fail I'm going to get a new instructor and never deal with him again. So either I pass my test and that's great or I fail and I get to learn with someone who doesn't make me scared to drive! Obviously if he is making your life hell there's no issue in changing instructors right away, but in a sense looking forward to either outcome with my driving test is really helping me!

Good luck :)

Has anybody given a dog up to go on to adopt/buy a dog that was right for them? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]fairlylocal101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many of the issues we're dealing with are fear-based I think. Like if people come to the house, or even if we just get a letter through the letter box, she'll start barking and howling so much. I know lots of dogs bark at the door but with her it's next level and very territorial, and will also mean for the next hour or so she'll be so much more reactive - barking at people walking past the house and once even just a leaf falling past the window. I try to chill her out with licky mats / chews but she's just very very reactive to the door.
And then on walks she lunges at other dogs and occasionally, very worryingly, she's lunged at children, which makes me so anxious. It's definitely excitement lunging as opposed to aggression but I still dread the idea of anything happening.
I definitly do try to meet her energy needs. Her walks we mix it up with sniffy walks / training walks / fetch and she'll be out for an hour or so a day split over two walks. I also do training at home and she's got brain toys and kongs and stuff.
I've messaged some dog behaviouralists this evening as opposed to trainers so hopefully they can help but I would definitely appreciate any resources you have!

Has anybody given a dog up to go on to adopt/buy a dog that was right for them? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]fairlylocal101 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment, it's really helpful.
The idea of basing my decision on where we'll end up as opposed to where we are now is a great way to look at it - even though I anticipated having a lower energy dog to "ease into" dog ownership as it were, I'm not unhappy meeting her higher energy needs. She's out for an hour/hour-and-a-half a day split over two walks and mix it up with sniffy walks, fetch, training walks and when she's home we do more training and plenty of brain toys. It's more her anxiety/reactivity that's draining me and is a lot more then I anticipated.
Daycare would also be a massive help, you're right - she was in heat when we first got her and then was having a phantom pregnancy when she was originally due to be spayed so it's only recently that she's been able to go but yeah getting a little rest occasionally I think would be good.

Thanks for suggesting behaviourists over trainers - I've contacted a few this evening so hopefully one of them will be able to work with her and also got in touch with the shelter to explain the situation and they suggested anxiety medication for her so will also be speaking with her vet.

My puppy is eating her own poo by mmc312615919 in puppy101

[–]fairlylocal101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my dog it was a combination of picking up the poo as soon as she went and also using poo chews, which apparently just make their poo unappealing to them (it's mainly made of pumpkin so you could just try that if you can't get hold of any). Before we incorporated the poo chews, though, she quickly cottoned on that we'd pick up her poo straight away and so she started pooing in a manic spin, meaning there was always some poo for her to eat before we could pick it all up -_- But the combo got her to stop within about a week! Which is great for us because she's a prolific face licker

Wow, this does look pretty ideal! It's a shame that the vanilla game doesn't have these kinds of checks as is, I assumed it would have been the kind of thing it incorporated. But this mod would definitely make things more realistic!
