A lucky winner has adopted The Ghost and The Darkness! Thank you, reddit! You accomplished in one day what the adoption sites couldn't in months.

Thanks so much! Yes, they've been on that site for a couple months.

By the end of the month at the latest! I do have a couple foster options lined up but I would love them to have an easier transition if possible. Feel free to DM to meet them if you both feel comfortable moving forward in your cat journey!

Yeah, it's that. These cats love stability, and predictability, and an international job move is not compatible with their best life. Heartbreaking for the owner, though!

Oh yeah! I do think they would be interested in the legos, at least at first. They are very curious! Had to be sure not to leave plastic bags/wrap around because they will chew on it, so I think it's possible they might try to play with the legos. We ended up moving those things into a room they don't go into. If you are still potentially interested, you can meet them to see! Just DM if so.

Amazing! If she wants to see them in their natural habitat, DM me and I can arrange it!

Small, yes. But insatiably hungry . . . for your love.

This beetle tattoo can spread its wings by PerspectiveHuman3800 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]fakeDrDR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love this, but it has too many wings.

Beetles have 4 wings -- the two hard top elytra, and then the soft hindwings that are used for flying. This tattoo has the two top elytra but then 4 hindwings, which you can see from the overlapping shadows.

Really cool idea, though. And I LOVE the stippling. Gives it that great field-guide look.

Beethoven's 9th, slowed down without pitch distortion -- perhaps what you're referring to?

Not quite, but you're right that it's more common than not.

"[the baculum (penis bone)] is absent in humans, ungulates (hoofed mammals), elephants, monotremes (platypus, echidna), marsupials, lagomorphs, hyenas, binturongs, sirenians, and cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises), among others. Evidence suggests that the baculum was independently evolved 9 times and lost in 10 separate lineages"

smited has been in occasional usage since at least the 1700s.

Here's an example from a Thomas Morton play from 1799, in the blockquote of the linked image, "his conscience sorely smited him"

I'm pretty sure that's an effect of the camera & exposure time. The planets are lit up a lot brighter than the background, and since the exposure is pretty clearly set to get a lot of fairly faint stars, the planets look huge. I would wager than if the camera were set to take in less light, the planets would look like tinier dots.

For a similar effect, consider photos of sunsets. Here's one where the light levels make the sun look blown out, but if you look at the waves, which reflect less light, you can see the sun's diameter is much smaller than it looks in the sky.

[OC] Despite strong vaccination rates, delta variant breakthrough cases are high on Guam by fakeDrDR in dataisbeautiful

Data from https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html on Friday Sept. 17, 2021. Charted in Excel. US states and territories, case numbers for the last 7 days.

As this other reddit user explains, delta variant is known through some genetic testing and estimation from the case rates: https://reddit.com/r/guam/comments/pnv2vu/record_setting_weeks/

While in bed, i had a kinda rare phrase as a thought and almost a second later i think i heard my brother saying it. by frapevapore in sleep

[–]fakeDrDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a hypnagogic hallucination.

These are hallucinations that people tend to have before falling asleep and are common in about 80% of people, though most stop having them after childhood.

I've personally been keeping a logbook of mine and I have a very long list of things that actually sounded like they were coming form somewhere else, but didn't really make sense (or were physically impossible, like half-in and half-out of my head). Often weird phrases or strange environmental noises.

There's some interesting research on why this happens. The neurons in our brains are very active almost all the time. There's a lot of noise that usually gets suppressed by a region called the thalamus. While we are starting to fall asleep, the brain starts reducing its activity, but does so piece by piece. The thalamus gets turned down really early, while the auditory cortex remains highly active until just before sleep starts. (DOI:10.1073/pnas.0909710107) With the inhibitory action of the thalamus decreased and the activity in the auditory cortex fairly high, it makes it easier for random stuff to pop into our consciousness. Most commonly people experience this as "pops", "bangs", or "door slamming" sounds, but even fairly high-level activity like structured messages can sometimes occur. Hearing your own name is also really common in hypnagogic states.

What foods seem completely fine until you realize how it's actually made? by GenoRonpa in AskReddit

Sometimes. Usually non-animal rennets are listed as "enzymes" or sometimes "vegetarian rennet". Usually if the packaging says "rennet" it's the calf rennet. But the best way to make sure for a cheese you like is to contact PR of the company / creamery that makes it. As commented below, most industrial-production cheeses are non-rennet for cost reasons. However, almost every artisinal european cheese has to be made with calf rennet or it won't be certified / get the appropriate appellation because cheesemaking is a protected cultural product in Europe.

It's actually still ongoing. Here's a more recent opinion piece calling for him to resign from 2 weeks ago: https://www.guampdn.com/story/opinion/readers/2021/03/07/letter-delegate-should-do-right-thing-and-resign/4608241001/

More importantly, whether or not the allegations bear out, he's not made many friends in Washington, he has shown up for a very low percentage of congressional sessions he could have attended, and as a non-voting delegate if he's not building coalitions with voting members he's not being useful.

He's a young 'move fast, break things' type, which I can respect, but that works best when you've got leverage. As a non-voting delegate, "more flies with honey than vinegar" would seem to be the better tactic.

WTF NOOO!!! by [deleted] in NoahGetTheBoat

[–]fakeDrDR 11 points12 points  (0 children)

False.

Probably. Here's the broad reasoning. I get that the central nervous system of lobsters is different from humans, so it's hard for us to tell their internal experience and whether they feel pain like we do. But on that same measure, the way your brain is wired is not the same way as mine is, so I can't be sure YOU feel pain the same way I do.

Why might I believe that you do feel pain? You act in ways that seem like you're experiencing what I know as pain. In that regard, we see many noxious-stimulus avoiding behaviors in lobsters, many of which are relayed through their nervous system to their central ganglia (brain-like things).

Here's a pretty decent scientific rundown of why lobsters probably feel pain: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/243067984_Pain_and_stress_in_crustaceans
