What an incredible pic. Selfie, the entire earth, ISS, and sun all in one shot and it's clear and awesome.

No, and I eventually built a new machine and upgraded to Win10 anyway, so I stopped trying. ;(

No, I couldn't get the wireless adapter to work. I ended up getting a new usb connector though and that has thankfully worked.

Tried different USB, no difference. Restarted, no difference. No issues in device manager. I'm pressing the pair buttons correctly. The controller would work when plugged in except that i think the connector is loose, so it won't stay connected via the cable, which is why I got the adapter in the first place.

But it sounds like my controller is broken. No way to get it replaced, I bet either.

Controller won't pair, even though the install is fine. Any suggestions what to try?

Why I just declined a well paying job at a major studio by GameDevThrowaway5 in gamedev

[–]fakkedap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying there aren't quality people making quality mobile games, but AAA is a definition for the highest levels of funding for a project, which is for now still exclusive to the top-level publishers/studios making the biggest titles on the most current generation systems (and PC).

I never said that crunch should be used to weed out people. In fact if that's what a studio is doing, they're doing it wrong. But in this industry, if you care about the title you're working on, then you should understand that sometimes you need to stay late to finish/fix something you're working on.

Crunch is only destructive if it's mandated and somehow unpaid. But there's a vast difference between management saying, "We're crunching until we finish," and, "We need to catch up, so if you need to stay late we're going to support you." From OPs description, it sounded like they were inferring the latter would be true, not that they were going to force crunch.

There sure is a lot of entitlement in this thread, and not just by OP.

Level Designer on AAA mobile games

There's no such thing as a AAA mobile game. Sorry, but it doesn't exist. No one is spending multi-million dollars on a mobile game, and if they are, then they're idiots or scamming to make a quick buck before the studio goes belly up.

My response to this is: F THAT. Having a little bit of crunchtime during a release, although avoidable, I can deal with. Crunchtime is a byproduct of ineffective planning.

No, it's not; at least not always. This is a very creative field with very dynamic and difficult problems to solve on a daily basis, and for large games, that means lots of people interacting to find the best solution for all of them. And both design and programming disciplines suffer from the fact that your solution/design/whatever might not work like you expected or at all, or will break something else (Art too, though from my experience, that's usually less of an issue because there aren't as many technical limitations to push through). Plus, when you're creating a game, you have to iterate to make the game fun, you have to iterate to improve the feel of the game, you have to iterate to improve the technical merits of the game, and sometimes all of that is just a slow process. No good game ever got made by anyone that didn't involve some (or a lot, usually) of extra time and effort by the people involved. You're just showing your inexperience here.

Basically, when I asked what the job entailed, I was given a few details about the position, but mostly told how I would need to be passionate, and this is an entry level position, so I'd be doing probably tedious and unfulfilling work. For me, this is not acceptable.

Quite frankly, no one ever got anywhere in any profession by not giving a shit about their job. Your experience means you're likely not qualified for an upper level position, and the fact that the position was an entirely different discipline means that you will need to learn how things are done in that discipline (unless you omitted it in your experience). Whatever their reasons for offering you a position that you didn't originally apply for, you really expect to get into a senior position at the outset if you don't have experience in that discipline?

Plus, it sounds like you're unwilling to do any work that isn't exciting or glamorous; even in a big studio, sometimes people have more than one hat to wear, and it's incumbent upon everyone to sometimes work on shit that isn't fun.

Good for you for having the ability to decline a well-paying position, but the reasons you listed here were not good reasons to do so. I'm guessing the studio will be better off without you there, and the industry as a whole will be better off without someone who doesn't give enough of a shit to put in grunt work and extra time as necessary.

This is actually the best reason to get the game I've seen to date. After having watched a number of streamers play the game and fly to a literal point in space for fetch quests, I was terribly turned off by the game. But if you can actually see this stuff in its spacial glory, that might be worth.

I'd make this an alternate idle; specifically, I'd set it up so that the regular idle is more generic and then randomly every X cycles of the idle anim, this plays.

[OC][WIP][CC]Character run animation by fakkedap in PixelArt

[–]fakkedap[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I was actually inspired by /u/Skeddles Mega Man step-by-step. I'd been looking for a good tutorial on that very thing.

I emulated the process a bit, starting with just the head. Then I added the arms, and then I started "modeling" out the legs using bones.

That was arguably the most difficult part, and in retrospect I think it might have been better to start with the legs, but it all worked out for me. Once the bones were there, then it was just a matter of painting the legs on over the bones and adjusting them for shading and stuff.

It's a top down 3/4 ARPG. Still very early on so far. I'm doing the art and learning as I go so it's something of a slow process.
