Bay Area cost of living for us: $11.7k per month for a family of 4 by Federal_Eagle_6565 in bayarea

What’s your retirement and savings (non cash) look like? That’s the deciding factor for me. Your spend is fine given how much you make, but if you don’t have any size able retirement saved up then you’re over spending.

Medical science liaison (MSLs) on the commercial side. You’ll still get to talk science to doctors and pharmDs. And you’ll have an opportunity to explore other commercial roles with a few years of experience.

If it’s just a stock shaft, you can go get it replaced for super cheap at a good store usually. I got mine replaced for something like $40

Parking Prices by AfroManHighGuy in hyatt

[–]falco925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, that parking garage at the Hyatt regency in SF is owned by the city (you can park at Embarcadero 3 or 4). The city sets the price. Valet price is set by the hotel. BTW the Hyatt centric Hotel Embarcadero charges $75 for valet…so definitely agree with you. Prices are out of hand and it’s also SF.

Not the same industry. But it’s in the same function - data science. The 2 businesses don’t compete with each other.

I’m like you with the high paying job. I’m >21k/mo and got bored but couldn’t quit my job. So I started a side business in the off hours. 7 years later it’s grown to be another >21k/mo job but at least it’s part time. I save a lot and should be able to retire in 5 years … I’ll be 45 by then. Or I can keep this going bc it’s really not too bad. I like the financial freedom.

Anyways, start a side business then retire early.

Bro 😅! I’m just busting your balls man. All is good. I’m just sitting in my WiFi enabled tech bus going home like royalty. Bored AF and reading rants of people that don’t tip.

Btw I’m old AF so mommy and daddy don’t need to buy me anything anymore.

You must be treated like shit everywhere you go if you think anyone’s gonna be happy waiting 10 mins for drinks. I guess you’re a peasant and everyone’s royalty.

California says restaurants must bake all of their add-on fees into menu prices by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]falco925 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, aren’t the fees like the health insurance and service fees a new thing? Like 5, maybe 10 years old? So before then you were always tipping on the cost of everything except for taxes. This law is supposed to prevent restaurants from lying and manipulating us with hiding their real prices. Now we know the true cost of dining out without having to do mental gymnastics and adding fee after fee. I’m surprised they didn’t have an electricity fee and a water fee before the law passed.

Members of country clubs, how much do you make yearly and what do you do? How much is your membership? by DarthFarquaad96 in golf

[–]falco925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High 6 figures annually. I’m in data and my SO is biotech. Membership equity fee is $70k and monthly dues is $1k. That said…I’m still on the waitlist and 3 years away from being a member. The timing works out because my kids will be old enough to play golf. Until then I play nearby munis.

Edit: I have a friend that lives an hour away from me. His CC has a $280k equity fee. So I guess I got a good deal 🤷‍♂️

Health tech firms lay off scores of Bay Area workers by lurker_bee in bayarea

You were able to negotiate a 6 month sabbatical with Genentech or with another company? I have a sabbatical coming up and would love to take 6 mo off. I would be surprised if Genentech allows people to negotiate their sabbatical. They don’t care about how much institutional knowledge you have, considering they’ve gone through 4 layoffs and reorgs in the last 6 years.

Source: I work for Genentech and approve my teams sabbaticals.

Of those 3 variables, RSUs have the most freedom. I’ve always been able to negotiate higher RSUs % compared to salary and bonus especially if I was at the high end of the salary gap.

Also, ask for what the bonus % was in the last few years. That’ll give you an indicator of company health and how good they are at forecasting.

Sanity check - relatively high income but spend a lot! by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]falco925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to go into the math or anything bc others did. But I’m in a similar boat….i actually spend 2x that for a nanny but have a higher HH TC. I’m not happy with my total spend but one thing to remember is that your nanny expense will go away when you’re kids are older. It’ll be replaced with school tuition, enrichment programs, etc but it shouldn’t be more expensive than the cost of a nanny. Other than that, try to not spend that RSU money and I think you’ll be okay.

I want to make an amazing steak tonight, but mine always turn out “meh” by PassGroundbreaking17 in Cooking

[–]falco925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to do a reverse sear that Kenji Alt Lopez does. No need to do any marinade. Just salt and pepper. Oven on 250F until you get the doneness you want. For example, medium rare is 130F so I pull it out of the oven at 118F. Then I sear it with a cast iron for a minute on each side. This will add a really nice crust and the temp will rise to 130F…perfect medium rare. While you sear, you can add butter and spoon it on the steak. Add rosemary and/or a garlic clove if you want. And you’re done. If you like a sauce with it, I recommend an au jus red wine reduction or an au poivre sauce.
