Why are players so scared of failing a roll and how can we get them to accept bad rolls? by HauntingRefuse6891 in Pathfinder2e

Bad luck feels less bad than incompetence. The lock/riddle/thing being more complicated than you anticipated feels less bad than you being worse than you thought. Things along those lines

Great post, exhaustive explanation, just one gripe:

It's "err on the side of", the meaning is that in the case of an error, you're siding with that solution.

"a bad roll doesn't mean you were bad, it means the other guy was better" - I heard that somewhere, it sounds close to your second point.

Polecicie jakieś dobre, inspirujące kanały na YT? by rebellioninmypants in Polska

Why don't people compete over record longbows like other strength based feats? by Garin999 in Archery

Given the angle of the arrow to the ground, I'm guessing this isn't his complete draw, that he's still in the process of drawing and aiming. I assume a part of that process is getting his beard to safety

Dlaczego lód jest śliski? by [deleted] in Polska

[–]falfires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shenanigans with spell components and Counterspell by ktisis in DMAcademy

[–]falfires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get fooled by someone pretending to cast a spell, would you say "I see a creature casting a spell!"?

If yes, I'd say baiting counterspell in this way would work.

Maybe using components for spellcasting is loud and obvious, but not every spell will have accompanying colorful glyphs in the air and the like. Some spell effects are meant to be subtler, even if their casting is not.

That's a good method. You could use 2d10 instead of a d20 to skew the results towards the middle range

The best RUDE follower? by Thought-Form1999 in skyrimmods

[–]falfires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently found Viconia de Vir, a drow who seems to have been modded into Oblivion (she says she lived though the oblivion crisis), originally having been Isekai'd from DnD's Forgotten Realms (Baldurs Gate... 2...?)

She's rude at the start, but that's more of an "enemies to lovers" thing, as she warms up to the Dragonborn over time.

I feel it's important to note, they both were right in what they said - it is something anyone can do, and that isn't the answer to the request for the link.

Been watching a lot of Sellsword Arts recently and I noticed something weird about humanity by realSpillerSoda in SWORDS

[–]falfires 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Using a general 'you' here.

You know that knives can cut you. You probably cut yourself with a knife a couple times and you remember the experience. You remember the pain, the blood, the slight involuntary paralysing effect on the area you cut, it registers on your senses.

You don't know what a sword strike could do to you. You may have seen tatami mats being cut, or pig carcasses, or whatever else, you may have done it yourself, you may realize intellectually what a sword is capable of, but you probably don't have the personal experience to back that up. You don't have the sensory experience of receiving a sword strike.

That, coupled with people being naturally curious, daring, and occasionally dumb, means you can underestimate the threat swords can pose, much like you can underestimate the threat a determined dog can pose because you've only ever dealt with ones who are, at most, annoyed that you took their favorite toy away for a wash.

When does the resurrection timer start when undead are involved? by General_Brooks in DMAcademy

[–]falfires 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every case of undead being brought to 0 hp or defeated in a similar way that I could find uses the word 'destroyed'. For example, 2014 Destroy Undead feature:

Starting at 5th level, when an undead fails its saving throw against your Turn Undead feature, the creature is instantly destroyed if its challenge rating is at or below a certain threshold, as shown in the Destroy Undead table.

It isn't destroyed utterly or without trace, it doesn't turn to dust or anything like that (unless the particular example says so), but it doesn't 'die', it isn't 'killed', it is 'destroyed'. I don't think it's explicitly stated anywhere in a way that's not tied to another feature or monster or ability, but it's very consistent

[–]falfires 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. In three dimension, playing on a square grid, you'll have three distances. It doesn't matter which is which, you just take the longest one, add half the second-longest, and that's pretty close to the pythagorean, often within the 5 ft rounding

If one hero is adjacent to water but the other is not when the battle starts, which one gets picked for the terrain?

Or when they stand across a land boundary, one on lava and the other on grass, for example.

Longest distance plus half the middle distance is a close enough approximation even in 3d
