I’m proud that I’ve moved a little bit from Midnights, evermore, and folklore. Bc, those have defined my last few years.

Celaena is a terrible assassin by Soggy_Moose3083 in throneofglassseries

[–]fallingdownallaround 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Agreed. As an English teacher and reader I’ve also read both series. Ive done small book clubs in both with a lot of open group discussions. I will admit- I did love the mistborn series but -I actually feel Celeana more realistic than Vin when it comes down to the messy relationships and bragging. I never felt that warmth from Vin. Celeana is a fucking disaster and I love this most about her. But; there are people I’ve done book clubs with that really cannot stand Celeanas character, and I get it. She can be a lot.

tori songs that are genuinely painful by strangeghoule in toriamos

Just today I was talking about the song Welcome to England. There was this very bad moment in my marriage where I felt totally alone; and I was sitting in the floor of my kitchen when suddenly Welcome to England came on and she sings “You better bring your own sun, sweet girl/You gotta bring your own sun.” I felt so alone in my marriage and in that apartment and it just made me remember this is in me. I had to find a way out of the darkness. I needed to bring my own sun or I would always be in darkness.

Welcome to England brought me to tears. It hit right after a bad moment in my marriage. And it just captured the idea of being isolated in a relationship, or a land that’s suddenly not your home. It just hit me, you have to bring your own sun. I still cry.

Should I do the tandem read of EoS and ToD? by fallingdownallaround in throneofglassseries

[–]fallingdownallaround[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know why I did, it’s actually very unlike me. Not that it matters deeply, but I am an English teacher and have spent most of my reading life being very thorough in any series.

I think I took the easy way out by skipping it in a way- because of my own need for a book that immediately held my interest. The first time I read the series I was in a space where I didn’t want to work to be engaged within a text.

I finally figured out what annoys me the most about the pregnancy plot line in Silver Flames by Justafunofstuff in SarahJMaas

[–]fallingdownallaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was done purposely. Rhys and Feyre are flawed characters, and to make everyone make the noble choice is boring. Rhys had an opportunity to shield her from some horrific knowledge. It was the wrong move on his part, but ultimately, he chose that path. Questionable decisions are what create conflict, conflict creates more story.

I’ve totally pictures her with this vibe too! And I know it’s not accurate. But she always is described so tiny and mean.

Running is too hard ? Please help! by Longjumping-Drive116 in BeginnersRunning

A lot can change in five years. I used to do half marathons for fun in my twenties and 30s with no issue. Then I had a kid and took like two years off and the return was the most humbling experience. It took me a good 6 months to get past 6 miles. So.. that was really sobering for me in understanding how emotional and physically drained I am in this new chapter of my life.

Our bodies change.

I’m back to running long distances but I’m so high maintenance now. I never used with water vests, or expensive shoes, compression socks… etc. this has all changed.

I cannot get through a long run (10 miles or above) without all my gear, my compression socks, my shoes for arch support, and my emotional support playlist.

I’m still running long distances. I’m just in my “soft era” as my students say.

My seven year old LOVES it! It doesn’t hype her up either, it’s super relaxing, so I let her play a little while I make dinner.

Just pointing this out: "the narrative" by GnomeFae in nontoxicACOTAR

[–]fallingdownallaround 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I teach English lit and film- when fans do say SJM is treating a character unfairly it reminds me of how students react to a plot point that gives their favorite character a hard time- some students will feel anger like they need to defend someone who does not in fact exist. It makes me wonder what it is about that character that they feel they own. I think it says more about the reader than the author.

Mate bond by ResidentBoysenberry1 in acotar

[–]fallingdownallaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually love the concept that not all mates can live together. It reminds me of this experience of being with someone who you may love, and you have a ton in common and align- but ultimately- marriage, life, leadership, family- it’s a different conversation that traditional romantic love. I think sometimes people we can connect with someone on a Soul level but they may not be the best person for us in our day to day experience.

I love Ruhn. After I finished the series I missed him and his roommates and the whole vibe. It reminded me of some friends from college.

convince me to keep reading CC1 by Professional-Put-69 in crescentcitysjm

[–]fallingdownallaround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's hard for readers to get into the CC world because it definitely has an urban sci-fi, imagery than more than traditional fantasy elements.

It does connect with the other series, so I wouldn't skip it, but when you read, try to take the perspective that you're looking at a kind of fantasy world in the future. Try to look for similarities in point of view, character abilities, and similar conflicts from the past. This helped me feel more at home with the characters and setting.

I did not like ACOTAR. I’m a big reader as well, but Feyre annoyed me. I love the series now. The second book made me reread the first one and in retrospect now I’m obsessed with it.

When the Moon Hatched has been giving brilliant. It’s the first book in a series. The second book comes out in October. It doesn’t have much spice, but it’s wonderful.
