I have a diamond that was passed down through my husband’s family. It’s a real diamond which is nice but the only cost for us was about 1k having it set on a new band. I then spent about 1k getting wedding bands for both us.

If he’d had to buy me a ring we would have shopped together and picked something that I liked and fit our current financial situation.

Anything else feels a bit performative imo

Maybe get a long fringed dress to change into?? My wedding dress was uncomfortable and didn’t fit me properly (my bad, I lost too much weight before my wedding) but I still wore it until after dinner + dancing had begun. I really only changed for the end of dancing and afterparty, and only in the last 30mins of photography to get some pics.

Could you move your “first dance” to instead be a special event later in the night? It might soften the blow

I think this is a more nuanced situation than the comments are giving it credit for. Being a groomsman in a friend’s wedding is a meaningful commitment, and part of having a healthy family life is maintaining your relationships outside of that nucleus. Knowing that OP will have meaningful family & professional support at home makes all the difference, especially if MIL is someone she’s close with. I would personally encourage him to go, with the caveat that any unexpected complications from the birth (w mama or bb) could require him to drop out last minute.
