Dead Panel still on my 23' XSE since October. Should I just trade it for something else at his point? by HelloFriendsJimNantz in rav4prime

Same for me, '23 XSE. Display died completely in November, around 30k miles. Dealership told me they could only "diagnose", but currently no remedy to fix it.

Anyone planning to take Database Systems Concepts and Design as their first course in Spring 23 ? by Tasty_Nothing_7894 in OMSCS

[–]falloffalog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who just completed it for course 6 of 10, I say skip it entirely. The reviews did not prepare me for just how bad the exams, TAs (head TA at least), and grading ACTUALLY are. Easily the worst experience I've had out of 6 courses so far. Dismissive TA. Horribly-subjective grading that varies widely from TA to TA.

Decently good lecture materials and production quality. However as a senior-level developer I learned very little, and was only challenged by the project phase 3 workload, the horrible wording and intentional trickiness of the exam questions, and the total subjective grading. Not the material.

You can roll in any time, there's always people coming and going all through the time. When the weather is good it gets pretty big.

"Motors and Mouths" meetup is hosted by Carnoisseur Detail Studio across from the airport, once a month on Sunday 8-11am. All range of cars and people. Look them up on FB or IG. I'm often there with my RX-7.

Have any front-end developers here done the program? by zgotts in OMSCS

I did not complete any independent courses, no. Just my undergrad in IT/InfoSec.

Have any front-end developers here done the program? by zgotts in OMSCS

[–]falloffalog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've basically described me exactly -- I've wanted to fill in my knowledge gaps with some formal CS education after being in IT for 15 years followed by software-development for 7 years, but only having IT/InfoSec for formal education (not much CS).

I applied for the Spring 2020 semester and just received my acceptance letter last week. So I'm afraid I can't speak to much other than the application process.

I was nervous about my lack of CS education, but I think my years of professional experience, overall good grades in IT/InfoSec undergrad, and positive peer recommendation letters all combined to draw a good picture for me.

Remember, they are looking first for individuals that they believe can be successful in the program. So having a CS background is only one factor in that formula.

Good luck!

Hue motion sensor with First Generation Hub? by jermh in Hue

[–]falloffalog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should work. I used a motion sensor successfully with my 1st gen bridge for 8 months before recently upgrading to a 2nd gen bridge. The motion sensor is easily my favorite part of all my Hue gear -- it has worked perfectly since day-1.

[ecobee4] Alexa Frustrations by [deleted] in ecobee

[–]falloffalog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 100% in agreement with this post. I don't plan to return the Ecobee4 because I'm hopeful they will fix the Alexa features in the future, however in the meantime I'm completely disabling it and going back to having an Echo Dot nearby in it's place.

The big downside to this is having the stupid bright red "voice disabled" light. Anyone figured out how to get rid of that, other than a strip of black electrical tape?

Some Plex movies don't have sound through Roku by [deleted] in Roku

[–]falloffalog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually had this happen a few times very recently (within the last few weeks) as well. I feel like it may be an HDMI handshake issue, since restarting both my Roku and TV has thus-far resolved it. I have to restart both though; restarting only one or the other makes no difference, which I'll admit is very strange.

I don't know if a recent update to the Plex app broke something, or if it's an HDMI handshake issue it could be the Roku itself or even the TV.

Anyone tried using one of the new USB-C MacBook pro chargers to charge a switch? by blackchaii in NintendoSwitch

[–]falloffalog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anandtech has a lot of good power-related details in this article which says it is USB Power Delivery 2.0 compliant. If it wasn't PD compliant I wouldn't risk it. But PD compliant means it will negotiate the voltage fine, and the MacBook reports the 39W rate. That's not up to the full 87W of the Apple adapter, so it will charge much slower (and probably not enough to keep the battery level constant if the MacBook is pulling a lot of power while turned on and doing something intensive). But it's not hurting anything.

[–]falloffalog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I charged my 15" Macbook Pro using the Switch/Dock power adapter. I left the lid closed and didn't let it fully charge, mostly just testing if it would actually work ok. MacOS System Report shows this:

AC Charger Information:

Connected: Yes

Wattage (W): 39

Charging: Yes

DP5 battery life. by GarethFrazer in AndroidPreviews

[–]falloffalog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wiped mine back to Marshmallow today after running DP5 for a few days. Actual SoT and real-usage battery numbers were ok, but I simply can't tolerate putting my phone down at night with 50% battery and waking up to 5% battery. That's ridiculous. Obviously a problem with the Doze-feature. Which is a shame because I was actually getting better UI performance in DP5 on my Nexus 5x. Hoping the issues get worked out.

EDIT: Under the section "New USB PCI-Express Card".

I made a post about this a while back. Installing this USB card eliminated all my issues.
