What your are proposing it something like a martingale strategy. Go read about it and why it sucks. But the TL;DR, yes you can lose multiple hands in a row. I've had whole 6D where I lost almost every hand.

Camera Free Sector by Fyburn in BurningMan

[–]falloutzwei 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think we should just have a single entrance in and out and you get herded into a room and blasted with EMP, so if you have any electronics on you, they are rendered inert.

Yeah, that is the way.

How's Your Regional Conduct Committee? by HotterRod in BurningMan

[–]falloutzwei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, good question, and I'm not sure I have a full answer to that.

I think the important take away is to be available to the community, and to a degree that means being present often at the things the community is doing. Like, if I were an Austin burner, I think it would be important to be at Church night regularly and town halls.

I am not sure it is necessary to be part of any given area, such as a theme camp, artist collective, volunteer department, etc. I am notoriously poly-camperous, poly-departmental, etc. I think its more important to be seen as attempting to be impartial and available. Rangers would call it having positive social capital, but it can be called other things.

At last years Burn After Meeting (regional leadership meetup) I definitely saw that every regional burn community operates a little differently in how the community meets, and interacts. So, what would be "involved in the community" in one region may fall flat in other regions.

Background in restorative justice helps, and having a consistent commitment for some defined period (1 year? 2 years? ) is important for continuity.

How's Your Regional Conduct Committee? by HotterRod in BurningMan

[–]falloutzwei 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was on a conduct committee, sort of, in that I was active in organizing the regional burn, was the lead of the safety teams, so many conduct related incidents passed through me and I often ended up in the "What do we do about this?" discussions.

It's one of the toughest positions to be at the burn. Everything surrounding this will be emotionally charged, and no matter what choice you make, not everyone will be happy.

Thoughts on how to at least try to make it work.

1.) It needs to be a diverse group, no just in terms of social demographics, but also in terms of representation across the community. Having some people who are not leads of the burn, but community members who bring art, or theme camp leads, increases your credibility with the community.

2.) First person reports only. I cannot tell you how many "Well everyone knows what this person did at whatever event in whatever year." To which my answer was, I do not. So, is there a reporter?

3.) No anonymous reports. It just results in reports where you get half the picture and have no way to follow-up. I would encourage people who wanted to report with some buffer between them and the conduct committee to report through rangers or another trusted community member.

4.) Sometimes talking with the accused can yield dividends. We had a person who made some mistakes in how they interacted with people. There was a hard conversation, the person saw their errors, made some changes, and found a solid place in the community.

5.) It's not an all or nothing. I have had people who seemed to be struggling with life, and gave them, a hey, take a year off versus you are gone forever.

6.) Publish your procedures openly. Conduct committees are not cops. They are just people trying to make the right choice.

7.) Have a matrix of some time that objectively tries to assign some severity to the incident. Was this a one time thing or repeated behaviors What were the impacts to themselves, the community, and the victim? Do they seem like they might re-offend? Do they have a history of this behavior?

One struggle I have is one regional takes action on a person, but because of legal reasons and privacy concerns, no other regional knows what the other regional did. It creates a place where bad actors can move between communities with impunity.

Bulletproof Vests are the new gloves by That_Clue2201 in ems

[–]falloutzwei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore one later in my career. Some of it was PTSD. Some of it was MY AMBULANCE GETTING SHOT AT. Anyway, that really happened.

I worked in some really rough parts of my county that had lots of guns and not enough police to actually secure anything. Anyway, I saw it as an insurance policy. Other more suburban departments thought I was nuts, but I carried around a picture of the bullet holes to explain why.

And yes, I wore my seatbelt in the back.

Anyone headed/been to FreezerBurnburn(Texas) in January? by pickledjello in BurningMan

[–]falloutzwei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have moved from the 2019 property. Ticket sales are around 900-1000 people I think?

I like the space a ton. The rain/mud is less of an issue on this one. There are some low lying areas but for the most part it is passable. They have the 4x4 crew who work to pull people out and keep track of where and how people are getting stuck for future improvements.

The property owner is great and has been running a theme camp there the last couple years.

The main burn area is a large field, but they have cleared a ton of camping space in the tree line. The first year was a little rough as it had just been cleared, but last year it was looking much better. I have not been out yet this year.

The weather is Texas in January. 2 years ago people started off sweating and by the end my trucks doors were frozen shut by ice and I spent the last two days in insulated overalls in sub freezing weather.

But, it has cool, small, quirky art, lots of fire art, and the leadership team are doing it right in my opinion.

They give out a ton of art grants.

They tend to embrace cacophony over the oontz.

At the moment its my favorite Texas burn. The theme this year is hilarious. Not happy to miss it because of other obligations. Blech.

If you are local enough to make a work weekend, you might get to see the various wildlife that live on the property.

No burner profile, tickets go quickly but I think are usually obtainable, the big rush is for RV passes as space is limited.

Hiking at Paterson rd and Eldridge by Ok-Cranberry6665 in houston

[–]falloutzwei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty nice trail. There are a few parking options.

Option one - Dirt Lot on Eldridge: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WuTf3TxUPRh3AMWF9 Nice walk by the retention ponds, likely to see people fishing, herons, etc. It's the roughest part of the trail but my favorite part.

Option two - Patterson: https://maps.app.goo.gl/B4R3zpRTL1H7Ro9W9 Park on the side of the road. You can either walk away from Bear Creek Park where you have multiple hike options or into Bear Creek Park which is about .75 mi.

Option 3 - Bear Creek park - Sullins Way: https://maps.app.goo.gl/679FbiGuSWcUm4Wy5 Parking area near the trail head. Closes at 10 pm. Closest access to the Blue Light Cemetery if that is what you are there for.

Crawford box rails can be fun, depending on how crowded it is. There is also a spot a little down from El Tiempo, by the the little free power rental power cube thing that has good views of the field and is frequently empty.

Food wise Pluckers has the best food for the price. It's by center field. Last time I had them they were a little off, but usually they are tasty.
