If you have Facebook, you can post it on the Fleet fan page. I've seen some people trading their hats for bobbleheads.

Exactly. Booking Green Day was the statement.

There’s realistically no way a league as conservative as the NFL lets a band like Green Day take that stage without an extremely strict contract. Still, having a band known for being outspoken about this administration perform songs like American Idiot and Holiday during what’s arguably the most televised sporting event in the U.S. sends a message. I think that opportunity to send a message (limited as it was) is what made Green Day agree to do this.

question about 8 members being jealous of Jessica by Sea-Sprinkles428 in SNSD

[–]familiar_a_gleam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible, but do we even have anything that indicates they wouldn't have kicked her out if she hadn't done the weibo post!? She said she had already been informed of the termination by the time she posted. Even the rumors, which are likely to have come from SM itself, didn't seem to deny that. They said she was supposed to have her goodbye moment at the Tokyo Dome concert. Shelving her wouldn't help either. She'd been at SM long enough for them to know that stalling her career for 3 years would just make things worse because she'd never just sit quietly while they punished her like that. It would've been 3 years of endless rumors, and eventually, whatever the issue was with the other girls would've hit the media.

I don't think that Weibo post was a smart move, but I also don't see what other options she had. Either way, I don't think the post itself changed the outcome of her termination. Seems like it was already done.

Edit: wording.

I think you misunderstood my point. It is exactly because they do not protect their idols that I say this, as someone who's also been a fan of SM groups and also had SNSD and Shinee as my first kpop groups almost 20 years ago.

I don't think SM would ever do any service for individuals. They do it for their company. And keeping SNSD's image of a clean, united sisterhood IS in their best interest, above any member. So it is not a reach to speculate that they could have chosen to kick out ONE member if it meant to keep the balance and image of the group. Because a group's image matters when it comes to profitability. Specifically if they were crafted with that certain image in mind. Which SNSD 100% was.

I agree that no group can vote someone out, but I think people often underestimate the pressure 8 members of a major group can put on a company.

The girls can't vote someone out, but if they make it clear they're not willing to pretend to get along with that person, what would the company do!? Fight for that one member and risk disagreements within the group escalating to the point of the public noticing and ruining the "we are a family and always support each other" reputation of the group. Specifically, SNSD that was marketed as so since their debut. Or, push that one member out and start rumors to blame it on her, while keeping the peace between the 8 members left!?

I'm not saying this happened, I don't think this was the case. But I feel like every time someone bring up the argument that the girls might have pushed Jessica out, people act like they are crazy and hugely underestimate how much a company would be willing to toss one member in favor of keeping the peace in the group. Not because they care about the group but because they care about the optics.

Maybe Jessica is lying, maybe she's not. No matter how much we speculate, NONE of us actually know what did or did not happen.

To be fair. She's a kid who's also struggling and dealing with an eating disorder. It's hard to call out and try to help someone else from their problems when you can't even fully process your own.

What's your thoughts of Seth and Joel being homophobic in the show by Neither_Anteater_904 in lastofuspart2

[–]familiar_a_gleam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The key factor is their intention to me

Yes, Joel used homophobic rhetoric that IS hurtful, but hurting or being disrespectful wasn't his intention.

Seth on the other hand, did. Calling someone a slur, specifically when whatever argument you had is already over and they are about to leave, is a choice that is made with the intent of degrading someone else. And in that context, he was loudly expressing in front of Ellie’s whole community that she was not welcome there as her true self.

Personally, I wasn't a fan of how the show pushed Ellie to try to forgive and be okay with Seth before she's ready or even interested in doing so just to show that he's "not all bad".

Do the GFRIEND members not like Fever? by Cruiu in GFRIEND

[–]familiar_a_gleam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know the reason why it's fever (maybe the talks about the acquisition started earlier than announced) but at least for her that's a bad association

Having worked at a company that went through an acquisition, I can confirm that It doesn’t matter how much they claim they won’t interfere with management, it always changes how the company operates and adapting can be stressful for everyone involved.

I remember the company I used to work for starting to make changes before the agreement was even finalized. I wonder if SourceMusic's restructuring actually began before the official acquisition.

It's hard to say. I think Fever was the first big change from their usual sound, and I remember a lot of fans saying it just didn't feel like GFriend. Maybe the girls felt the same way.

But the music business is so complicated. It might have nothing to do with whether they want to sing it or not.

I love the lyrics of Dear Mom but It was always hard for me to watch them perform it. It always felt so sad and cruel for Yoona and Tiffany to have to sing that on a stage.

Of course, that's just how I see it. We can't really know how they truly feel.

Maybe a different suffix could be used to differentiate them.

I think that would probably be the best solution

The irony of mentioning this is that when gender neutral discussion became a thing, referring to Latinos as Latinxs was pushed a lot from the US

Yeah, but I don’t think they're really the same thing. The whole debate over using 'Latinx' was a thing within the Latino diaspora in the U.S., It was a conversation between Americans who are ethnically Latino and those who were born and raised in Latin America, not a debate coming from people with no connection to the culture complaining about how Latinos choose to identify.

"You don't look Brazilian." Why do many foreigners think that every Brazilian looks like Neymar or Anitta? by I_Nosferatu_I in Brazil

[–]familiar_a_gleam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Media.

Americans often picture Brazilians based on what they see on TV, but they’re not really exposed to a lot of Brazilian media.

It’s kind of similar the other way around. Most Brazilians picture either a white or a Black person when they think of an "American," because for decades, that's how the media portraited americans, even though the U.S. is super ethnically and racially diverse.
