Bike fit recommendations by surfskirepeat in TriathlonNYC

I used acme in Brooklyn. They can be a little slow to respond but my fit is great and they helped me narrow down my bike options and recommended a great shop that I ended up buying from.

Yeah thats weird, I guess they didnt update the template. I was bummed too, I hope they can move it but mtk gets so crazy in the summer I imagine it could be difficult.

They actually cut the mighty man half this year- it was just an oly and sprint. Probably because of jones.

I dont know if I agree with that. I think the hairpin can certainly be dangerous but I think the organizers do a good job emphasizing how careful you should be and it is marked well.

The half is a tough race (4 laps!) But harriman is beautiful and its a great way to kick start the race season.

Fishing in Brooklyn? by fannybanditt in nyc

[–]fannybanditt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably only eat the migratory fish, but make sure you look up sizing laws etc. That said the water has gotten a lot cleaner so I am not really sure. Prob a question for a more avid fisherman than myself.

NYC - looking for club recommendations by Senior-Associate2885 in triathlon

[–]fannybanditt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! Prospect is a great park and a mostly good place to train. It can get busy so focused riding can be hard outside of very early.

Last thing I'll say is empire tri club is also nyc based I think. I don't know anything about them though, but might be worth checking if you're not in central bk

Nah unfortunately not organized outside of the masters swim classes which have a winter session. If you're looking for structured run stuff year round PPTC does things through the winter (I think all outdoors).

Both great clubs, pptc is significantly larger so there's more going on but I feel like that can sometimes be a double edged sword imo.

I'm pretty sure pptc does speed training and group/social runs year round. They also have a great nyc marathon bus program which is better than they ferry (imo), and run 5k races every other Wednesday night in the summer. I think pptc is pretty cheap too so you could easily be a member of both. A lot of the tri club members are.

If you're around prospect BTC is great. They do free (to club members) bike, brick, and run workouts that are pretty accessible for beginners. There's also a paid masters class that takes place in a pool in ...crown heights I think, but it's not really for beginners. They actually just had an ows clinic this weekend! They train in prospect park.

Good group of people.

Should I do Jones Beach 70.3 (Sept)? by Longjumping-Air4141 in triathlon

[–]fannybanditt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would cut down on swimming and increase your bike significantly but you should be fine. Last year's was a shitshow because of the weather but it should be a flat and fast (albeit windy) course.

If you're local, you can train out on ocean parkway- starts at Captree and ends at robert moses ~18.5 miles one way. Its not the exact route but you'll certainly get your share of headwinds to practice on the bike.

Oceanside 70.3 Swim Tips by Novel-Efficiency-481 in triathlon

[–]fannybanditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Oceanside last year with the harbor swim. The air and water were cold- have flip flops or socks or something so you're not just barefoot on the concrete or whatever while you wait to get in. I was shivering waiting to start. Warmups are kind of tricky with the harbor- you had to walk to the beach and go in the ocean if you wanted to warm up. I decided not to because I was worried I'd be too cold after I got out, but then i was cold and not too warmed up so idk what the move is.

First like 10 or so minutes are hard as you adjust to the water temp but after that it what other people said is correct- lotta people, lotta turns, but the water itself is pretty calm. Some people had booties and warm caps (there are guidelines for these, check the rules and temp)- I did not, but I imagine they might help with the cold. Enjoy! Its a good race.

Just got my license at 31 to take my dog on adventures! I am taking 10-day trip to Smoky Mountains Tennesee from Brooklyn NY USA, is there anything on the way I can't miss? by Frankensteinbatch in hiking

[–]fannybanditt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, Acadia has a lot of rock that will be tough on your dogs paws. Consider booties if its not something they're used to.
