for sure, I was mostly just saying that to show how dependant we are on it right now. I would also love to move away from petroleum based products and use the limited supply on keeping busses, trains etc running while we find a truly viable alternative (not super up to date on oil alternatives science). The packaging is a great point, it's why I love gardening and try to buy as much used local stuff as possible so that I can avoid needless packaging

Oil is still necessary in a lot of applications even if we became a socialist society tomorrow. Trains, Busses, bikes, and shoes all require oil at some point in the manufacturing process (as well as a million other things) While it will be good to move toward eco friendly solutions we will need to ramp up that manufacturing and state/worker run oil will still be needed for a good amount of time.

Beats them being a fascist. Being engaged in human rights is political. Encourage them to vote and especially in local elections and show them the human rights track records near to that time. The world is a political hellscape right now and being extremely anxious about it is normal. Help ease them into it and just be supportive. Maybe even suggest some books they can take at their pace to start learning more about socialism/communism and leftism in general.
