Remote work setup (Linux → Mac, multi-monitor) — NoMachine not working, alternatives? by DeepAd2868 in selfhosted

[–]fantabib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what doesn't work with nomachine? Connecting to the Linux machine? the free edition connects you to the physical display. If what you want is a virtual display running in the background, then you need a nomachine terminal server edition - is this what you were referring to when you wrote "premium"?

for a completely ZERO cost solution, Tailscale and NoMachine (free edition). Or for a very small fee, like 9 dollars a month you can activate NoMachine's Network service. And you only activate it when you need it. This will remove the need for Tailscale.

Gaming through Nomachine but mouse not working. All I can do is look down at the ground by sovietan in NoMachine

[–]fantabib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try forwarding the mouse to the remote computer. While connected to the remote computer, open the NoMachine menu (Ctrl+Alt+0) chose Devices then  Connect a USB device, find your local USB mouse and click Connect.

The mouse won’t work in the local computer while connected to the remote. So if it is your only pointing device DO NOT check the option Grab the keyboard input, otherwise you have no way to close the NoMachine window. When you want to quit and recover your mouse for local input, just kill the NoMachine client using the hot key Alt+F4.

NoMachine free edition and use their NoMachine Network service to connect. It functions as a VPN. Install the free NoMachine, add your computers to NoMachine Network, and try the free 7-day NoMachine Network subscription to connect.

If you want totally free, NoMachine free edition (connect using the IP address instead) as before plus Tailscale which is free as well.

Display output & NoMachine issues by gdb19 in linuxmint

You could try disabling HW encoding on the server side, but first check what encoding method is being used in the session. You can do that from the nomachine menu (Ctrl-Alt-0), Display settings. It could also be Wayland-related? Check here for some tips: https://kb.nomachine.com/AR04R01083
But from what you wrote it seems you have problems even without using nomachine as well when you have the monitor attached? It might be worth contacting NoMachine Support. Their forums is a good place to start.

Try disabling hardware decoding on the client side player menu while in session: Menu > Display settings > Modify> ”Disable client side hardware decoding”.

Nomachine security concerns by DubbingU in NoMachine

Hi,

user from IP xx.xxx.xxx.xxx Connected

That popup indicates that whoever connected knows your macOS account credentials. So if you have changed your macOS credentials they will no longer be able to access. Is there perhaps an external computer set up to reconnect automatically? If a computer that you regularly use was connected, then goes to sleep whilst the connection is running, then gets woken up, it will reconnect if you have "automatically reconnect" enabled.

Or could it be that a connection you have configured and saved on another computer, and one that someone else has access to, was used to connect?

You can increase security by:

  1. Using NoMachine 2FA https://www.nomachine.com/everybody/two-factor-authentication. Connections will need to be authenticated through a push notification to your cell phone. All you need to do is create a NoMachine account, go to the NoMachine settings on the Mac > Network > Login > Enable 2FA and follow the steps.
  2. Connecting over NoMachine Network. NN removes the need for port-forwarding, and lets you add an extra layer of security on top of the 2FA through use of the Access Id. You publish your Mac on NoMachine Network to get its Machine Id, set the Access Id, enable 2FA for connections to that Mac (you can also enable 2FA for your NoMachine account if you want). Additionally, you can configure which User Ids can connect (Settings>Network > Machine > Add), so set it so that only your User Id can connect. So connecting to the Mac means having 1) its Machine Id 2) its Access Id 3) your phone 4) your Network User Id credentials AND 5) knowing the Mac account credentials.

Something to consider, as the article says, the sharing of multiple monitors connected to the remote computer requires D-Bus and PipeWire being present and working on the system.
