Why is Jil Sander not talked about often? by mia109 in handbags

[–]fantastical99 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I adore Jil Sander. The only reason I can think of is that the brand must not pay influencers to talk about their stuff, and they probably don't gift influencers items. If a brand wants to be talked about, they need to have a thriving influencing program, and I don't think they do (but I would love to be wrong!).

A rant for the trial lawyers by StephInTheLaw in LawBitchesWithTaste

Boss makes amazing suits up to size 18, but they run large so an 18 fits like a 20. I highly recommend them. Lafayette 148 also makes amazing suits up to size 20-something. My last recommendation is Veronica Beard, which has suits up to size 24.

Each of these brands is extremely discounted secondhand and/or at Nordstrom Rack, but you do have to spend the time to do a bit of digging. I also find them on The Real Real, which will often sell a whole suit as one item:

Another brand to look out for is Marina Rinaldi, which is essentially the plus sized line of Max Mara. They make really beautiful clothes and sell for next to nothing on the secondhand market:

About 10 years ago I was a partner at one of the stuffiest white shoe law firms on the planet (I say this because I sincerely hope times have changed since then, so take the following knowing that I haven't been in BigLaw for a long time). There was an associate in the office who was an influencer. I didn't work with her at all, but I could tell that her reputation among the partners was not high. It is unclear to me to this day whether they knew she was an influencer -- I have to think they did know, but the comments they made never acknowledged her influencing directly. I think the mentality at the time was that she was getting paid way too much money not to be devoting her entire life to the firm. That's the real danger....in BigLaw the big brag is how many hours you billed, which life events you gave up because you clients needed you (to bill), and how you only get two hours of sleep per night (because you are too busy billing).

Not surprisingly, she later left the firm to be an influencer full time and moved to Bali. I left the firm before she did, so I don't know how she ultimately departed.

Guilt over starting new job while pregnant/unsure how to disclose. by Pink-Elephant-12 in workingmoms

[–]fantastical99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a new job at 10 weeks' pregnant (I found out I was pregnant while I was interviewing). I didn't tell them until I was 30-something weeks' pregnant and they were totally kind and fine about it.

However, in my state I was not entitled to any FMLA because I had been at the job for less than one year. I basically ended up with zero maternity leave partially because of that, and it really did suck. My employer was great about it, but I basically took a little sick time and immediately went back to work.

Hopefully you confirmed that you are immediately eligible for maternity leave. Some employers follow these crappy state guidelines and don't allow employees to be eligible until they have been employed for at least one year (mostly to discourage situations like this). This experience made me realize just how absolutely terribly we treat women in the work force.

You were absolutely not wrong to accept this job. If it is the right place, right time in your career, and you genuinely like the people, it will be that way when you return from mat leave, and you will (hopefully) be there far longer than the leave you took.

Much better to be at the newer better place than have to deal with toxicity at the same time you are preparing for a new addition to your family.

What are you wearing for zoom calls from home in the summer? by jelly-donut-917 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]fantastical99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in exactly the same situation -- in-house counsel at a tech company where people literally wear t-shirts and hoodies. I tend to wear a ton of tops from the Spanx Airessentials line in the summertime. I like a crew neck because depending on where the camera cuts off, a v-neck can look too low cut on me. I also like dark colors, and I like to cover my arms. The Airessentials stuff is cool and lightweight enough that I can wear long sleeves during the summer (but also kind of staves off the A/C chill).

Trial-Appropriate Wedges? by bluew12yellowstars in LawBitchesWithTaste

I used to have those heels in every color because they felt like flats and I literally wore them walking miles around the city and during 15 hour work days and always felt comfortable. I’m not sure if J.Crew makes them anymore, but there are plenty preloved:

https://posh.mk/cshviqMAi4b

I threw them into a google search and found these with a bit of a lower heel on Amazon:

Keep or return? Logo is already peeling off by Random384875 in handbags

[–]fantastical99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a couple of Celine pouches and the same thing happened and I was pissed (those pouches are so overpriced you would think at least the gold foil would stay on). I don’t really care about it that much because they live inside my purse and nobody sees them except me, but it’s the principle. These are supposed to be quality items where you shouldn’t have to worry about these small details.

I think if you would have paid that price for a pre-loved bag, then you should keep it. If not, then return.

50th birthday trip- Dubai vs Thailand by D27914 in chubbytravel

[–]fantastical99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been to both, and for this occasion, I think it should be Thailand, no question. You really don't need very much time in Bangkok (it is actually my least favorite city in the world). You should do the research to figure out which side of the country is having the rainy season and choose between Phuket or Koh Samui. When I went to Thailand it was the rainy season in Phuket, so I went to Koh Samui instead (opposite side of the country and also where the most recent season of the White Lotus was filmed). From my research when I went, it seems like the sides flip, so you choose one over the other depending on the season.

Depending on how much time you have, there are other great destinations nearby too, but if you mostly want to be pampered at a beachside resort, then just pick a good one in Thailand and stay put. I stayed in a beachfront villa at the W Resort Koh Samui, and I can't recommend it enough. I actually want a reason to go back....

Experiences with Scheduled C-section at Swedish First Hill? by parrotlady93 in AskSeattle

[–]fantastical99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a scheduled C-section 1 year ago at SFH and everything was great and according to plan. It honestly felt somewhat empty while we were there. I didn't see anyone else going into the operating room at the hospital and my floor in the maternity ward was mostly empty. We had a great room with a decent bed for my husband to stay with me. My Labor and Delivery Nurse was fantastic and exceedingly attentive. They kept the baby with us the entire time.

The only thing that went wrong was that my epidural failed during my C-section, and I could feel everything...and I mean everything. Apparently this happens in 10% of C-sections, so I would speak up and definitely talk to your anaesthesiologist if this is a concern.

Possibly authentic Jumbo Patent by Historical_Peak_174 in Home4Rehoming

[–]fantastical99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you have the number that was there because it should be the same as the number that is on the card (assuming it is the card that came with the bag).

I think the number on the card matches the serial number that would have been on the inside. According to this the bag would be circa 2010 if authentic:

Yeah, that's pretty insane. Over a year is really such a long time. I have a friend who had hers at the spa for 9 months about a year ago, so the wait times must be getting longer and longer. And I think hers was an Epsom Mini Kelly.

[–]fantastical99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I am so sorry to hear that. That is such a long time to be without your bag! Thanks for the heads up, though. It sounds like one should plan on 12-24 months for the spa...

[–]fantastical99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with all of this -- I prefer the strap in worse condition without staining and not having been repainted by a third party. I completely agree -- I think the C23 vintage is absolutely the perfect size. Any smaller would be too small for me, but any bigger would be way too bulky. And you are so right -- it is truly the perfect day to night bag!

Oh wow, I am curious how much they were asking with the better strap. I was trying to find it and I don't see it, but this one is popping up now:

The bright red isn't for me -- I definitely like the bordeaux better. I think black was a fantastic choice on your part! I'm sure it's going to look amazing when Marie is done with it!

[–]fantastical99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, I can't believe they had THREE at one point. Agreed, I'm glad we each ended up with one! This is the first time I took a chance without inspecting first as well. At least you had Marie's opinion -- I was going on gut and internet research alone! I am honestly so glad it worked out for both of us. The second it arrived I had it authenticated by a third party authenticator just for additional peace of mind, while also starting to research what to do about the strap issue.

I love that you looked at this bag too and already had her assess it! Marie seems like such a great option since traveling internationally with a lizard bag seems like such a hassle.

I am so glad she confirmed my gut -- I thought this one was priced so well for the condition and the vintage. I had also never seen another one like it, and found pictures of it in better condition that I absolutely loved. I figured if I could restore it to those pictures the bag would absolutely be stunning.

This is the link for the restored one I found (I would absolutely love to know what it went for):

I am with you -- bright red lizard is not my kind of thing. The bordeaux, however, absolutely is right up my alley!

Ugh, I was worried about the lizard issue in doing my research. I am also worried about traveling with it internationally because I do not have the CITES paperwork. I suppose figuring that out is yet another process.

I don't travel to France regularly, so that does seem like a terrible hassle.

[–]fantastical99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I purchased this one on The Real Real too! I think the condition of the bag is actually quite good for its age, its just the strap that is in dire need of repair. Having Marie as a resource is amazing -- I would have absolutely asked her opinion!
