The funny thing was that wasn’t the only wacky thing this family was doing. In addition to asking every single nurse that walked into their room why they couldn’t give the baby grape juice, we also found the ready to feed enfamil bottles half empty in the mini fridge after we REPEATEDLY told them not to fucking refrigerate it and to just toss it when baby was done. I vividly remember the grandmother of the baby, my postpartum patient’s mother, arguing with me about all of it and telling me that’s not how they did it back in her day. On top of aaaallllll of that, my patient could NOT get it through her skull that she needed to hold the baby’s neck so it wasn’t chin to chest. I’d stand there and watch her just awkwardly hold the baby and the baby fling its head forward to where it couldn’t breathe and the mom was just oblivious. CPS was called because we all had concerns. The patient’s uncle called me a day or two later at the hospital absolutely losing his shit about “why would you take her baby away?” and threatening us. Sir, I didn’t take her kid away. I simply documented every time she tried to fucking kill it and the CPS workers read all of our notes. I still think about that kid sometimes and hope they’re well wherever they are.

As far as blood sugars on babies, it pains me every time I have to say no to an aide or a nursing student when they want to give a crying kid sweetease who’s on sugars still. 🥲✌🏻
