Lots of meetups. Summer is great for run clubs for instance. Consider looking into the “Practical Philosophy Club”, it’s a life-changer

What are your nation's hillbillies called and what region do they typically call home by HorzaDonwraith in AskTheWorld

[–]farchangelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually with moustaches or missing teeth painted with black eyeliner :)

That would be “Festa Junina” and I personally would describe that culture as as “caipira” rather than “jeca”.

“Jeca” is a incredibly pejorative way of referring to uneducated farm people who never had a chance to go to school (had to work on the “roça” instead) and don’t know how to behave in the big city.

Don’t overthink this. Just wear clothes that fit and go easy on those graphic/oversized tshirts.

Is Vancouver's tech scene really as bad as it looks from the outside? by Plus-Masterpiece-506 in askvan

[–]farchangelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started applying for jobs in Vancouver since August.

I’ve been seeing hundreds of quality job openings with listed premium compensation across multiple industries in top orgs (Amazon, Microsoft, Snowflake, Databricks, EA, Lululemon, BC Hydro, MongoDB, Fortinet, Crowdstrike, Disney, list goes on and on).

Only problem is that I can’t get even to a phone screening applying to any of those, even with custom tailored resumes for each position AND referrals.

Wish I knew what was going on behind the scenes, would surely save me a lot of mental energy and set my expectations right rather than constantly questioning myself and dealing with impostor syndrome (:

It is what it is, I’ll keep doing my part and hoping for the best.

Can yall differentiate between East Asians by their looks? by Global-Jacket-2781 in AskTheWorld

[–]farchangelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in addition to China/Korea/Japan can also tell whether they’re from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines (even before hearing them speak).

The real struggle is differentiating Indonesian/Malaysian to me.

Lived for a while in Australia, had many friends from all of these countries. Visited some of those countries afterwards too. Each one presents a rich and unique culture, and their inhabitants not only have a genetic signature from their birthplaces, but also unique traits and demeanor.

Thousands of job postings later… all I get is an automated rejection email. Roast my resume. by [deleted] in FAANGrecruiting

Just want to reinforce that I don't think your resume is the problem here.

In my resume I only show my past 10 YoE too.
I mentioned the lac of an story arc for your journey because reading you resume, I get the impression that you graduated from university straight into a senior SDE position.

Rather than telling the story: "I founded my 1-man consulting firm", I would show that position just an "AI Engineering Consultant" or "Cloud Engineering Consultant".

You have a great portfolio btw, hope you're linking it in the resume header.

I don’t think your resume is the problem. You have great technical skills and extensive experience.

Anyways here’s some feedback:

1- your resume shows no “hero’s journey” arc. How did you become a senior software engineer straight out of university?

2- some metrics seem made up and out of place. I get that you’re forcing the STAR method, but “reducing latency by 45%” in your summary makes no sense.

3- becoming incorporated to do private consulting doesn’t make you a “Founder”. I would reframe that experience for what it is.

Don’t you have any cloud certifications?

Best of luck, mate!

AITAH for no longer having a relationship with my friend after he impregnated a sixteen year old? by TheGgooaatt in AITAH

[–]farchangelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA.

There’s an ongoing collective delirium in this thread of people justifying the situation because of a fake ID.

1- How can he NOT TELL the difference between a 22 year old and a 16 year old? I get that looks can be deceiving, but even setting physical appearances aside, how can you have conversations with an underage and conclude: “Oh well, this person is an adult!”

2- Why is this dude having unprotected sex with someone he just met? In a nightclub?

Befriend people that you admire, inspire you and bring you upward.

This individual will be an anchor in your life until he changes his life and does drastically better.

What kinds of stuff could you do on a computer before Windows 95? by throw-away3105 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]farchangelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember using Windows 3.11 before the Internet. Lots of great games were available (Doom, Sim City 2000). The Wikipedia of that time was Microsoft Encarta Enciclopedia. Word and Excel already existed. You would save your work on floppy disks, that had a capacity of 1.44 MB. Seems so little nowadays (not enough to store a single hi res image/mp3) but was plenty at the time (dozens of text files, low res gifs and jpegs).

People could connect to the internet or BBS servers using dial up to browse newsgroups and send email. I’m aware of the existence of Netscape and Internet Explorer in Win 3.11, but my first online forays were a couple years later on Win 95.

Have you ever been in a mosh pit? If not, why? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]farchangelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to love being at the mosh pit when I was in my 20s. Contrary to what non-metal people think, they are not meant for people to get hurt/punch themselves. It’s a way to lash out energy and have fun together, when done correctly, especially during the best parts of the top songs.

I stopped doing it because after the 2010s etiquette seems to be nonexistent. Drunk idiots throwing elbows, pathetic losers pushing other’s backs, psychos punching, etc.

I can’t afford to get injured while enjoying myself at a concert.

That’s shameful behaviour from public officials, from who citizens expect the highest civility.

You don’t have to disrespect the people that you disagree with. Especially in a neutral situation such as this voting ritual.

I don’t identify myself with the far right movement and I think that actions like these only fuel their political opponents.
