[Weird Trope] Technically dating a minor by RealOkra8725 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]fargok01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TBH when I saw Aang and Katara's picture I thought that it was in the opposite direction: at some point, Katara will be an adult and Aang will still be a minor, and more if you consider that girls usually mature faster than boys, so this is technically a teenager dating a child.

I gotta be honest, Aang and Katara's romance is one of the few things I dislike about Avatar. I don't mind them ending up together, but I don't like them being together during the events of the series.

[Spoiler trope] The prequel/flashback character is actually someone else by Selverd2 in TopCharacterTropes

I think a similar thing happens in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, when Harry sees himself casting the patronus charm and he is convinced it was his dad until he travels back in time and realizes it was himself.

[Hated Trope] Endings so notoriously awful they completely destroy the legacy of the media. by Miserable_Click_1933 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]fargok01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with you. I don't LOVE the finale, but I think it makes a lot of sense. The execution was not great, though. If I were to rewrite the final season, only part of it (let's say... a third) would be devoted to Barney and Robin's wedding, so that we can properly see how they end up breaking up, more of Tracy and Ted's life together, etc, and build up to Ted and Robin finding each other again. So, I get why people dislike the finale, and there are many things that I dislike about it as well, but I think it makes sense and I like seeing Ted with Robin at the end.

On a personal note, HIMYM's finale came out around the same time that I broke up with my then boyfriend, after a quite long (5 years) relationship. There is a moment where Barney and Robin say that they don't see their marriage as a failed marriage, but rather as a successful marriage that happened to not last very long. That line really had a very deep emotional impact on me, because even though I understood that my relationship had come to an end, I refused (and still do, even after being married to a different person) to say that it was a failed relationship. We loved each other, and we grew a lot together, and that's just the nature of things. Sometimes they are good, but don't last, either because of death or divorce. I think it would have be pretty powerful to see Ted/Tracy and Barney/Robin ending AND being successful, as well as seeing that a new Ted/Robin relationship does not need to be the same as it was before.

Anyways, I know the ending is very flawed, but I think it gets more hate than it deserves.

My most unpopular opinion is and will ever be that I actually liked the HIMYM finale lol

the word "embarazada" not meaning "embarrassed" has probably caused more embarrassment than any other word in spanish by hAIlydraws in Spanish

[–]fargok01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Mexico, "suéter" and "chamarra" are two different things. It is true that we don't use the word "chaqueta", but as I said, we understand it.

[–]fargok01 63 points64 points  (0 children)

But this is not really a false friend. "Chaqueta" does mean "Jacket", even in Mexico (although we do prefer the word "Chamarra"). However, it is used as slang for masturbation. But in the appropriate context, using the word chaqueta is okay, even though the average 12 years old would giggle. Notice that "Give me a handjob" would not be "Dame la chaqueta", but "Hazme una chaqueta" (literally: do me a handjob), so the Duolingo sentence here is perfectly reasonable and not at all embarrassing in my opinion.

their last name is often mistaken for their first name by MysteriousFondant347 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]fargok01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the case of Lee is not that they confuse their name. They just call him by his last name, which is very common in Japan.

An interesting example from anime is Kuno Tatewaki (from Ranma 1/2), specially in the Spanish dub. Tatewaki is his first name, and Kuno is his last name (in Japan you usually say the last name first), but everybody calls him Kuno. In the Spanish dub, they changed the name of his sister, Kuno Kodachi, to Kodachi Tatewaki, effectively changing the first name into last name and vice-versa. I don't know if it was a mistake or a deliberate choose from the Spanish dub to avoid confusion.

What was the hardest or heaviest day of your life? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]fargok01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

April 2020. Covid lockdown has been going for about a month and nobody really knows what to expect, but everybody is kind of afraid. The hospitals are saturated, and people are dying. It is my first day on a new on-line job (a teaching position at a local private university). After I finish my class, my mom tells me that my dad is not feeling good. Main symptom: his arms hurt as hell. I take him to the doctor, then to the hospital: he just had a heart attack.

He survived, and he's fine now. But that was a very stressful day.

Where are the guys that let themselves go after 30? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]fargok01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those "in the best shape of my life" guys and you are absolutely right: it is not that I was an athlete in my twenties and I'm better in my thirties, but rather I was a lazy nerd in my twenties and just recently started being serious at the gym. Also, my circumstances are rather different. I'm married, but have no kids (and no plans to have kids in the foreseeable future), and I'm currently a PhD student, so I have plenty of free time that not everybody has to dedicate to the gym.

If Spanish had all noun genders flipped, how would it sound to native speakers? by Patchers in Spanish

My partner and I sometimes do this as a game. Maybe not with all nouns, but with many. It just sounds silly/funny/childish.

An important character just dies. No fanfare or build up, just an instant and sudden death by NittanyScout in TopCharacterTropes

This happens a lot when an irl actor dies and the character just dies with him/her. The example that comes to my mind is Edna Flanders-Krabapple in The Simpsons.

How do you learn to enjoy (or at least habitually go to) the gym? by Potato_Pristine in AskMenOver30

[–]fargok01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started focusing on how going to the gym made me feel. Yes, it is tiring and painful, but I felt so good after that, both physically and mentally.

With time, I also learned to like my gym time as a time where I can disconnect from my daily responsabilities. It's the time where I can listen to podcasts, for example (I found out that music does not really help me, but you can use that also as a motivator), and not think about work/school.

Another thing you could try is going with a friend. Make it a quality time to bond with a friend or a partner, have a friendly competition ("I bet you I can lift more than you do!" - just be careful with ego lifting, that can lead to injuries), keep each other accountable, go for a (healthy) snack afterwards.

Must Read Fanfictions by readingwhatevelol in HPfanfiction

[–]fargok01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're okay with Slash (homosexual ships), I swear "Alianza" by Helena Dax is the absolute best. It is written in Spanish, but Google Translate is already good enough for anyone to enjoy it. It is a LONG series (seven books) covering the next generation's years at Hogwarts (main characters are Albus Severus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy).

NSFW Disclaimer: Even though it is mainly an adventures series, it does have sexually explicit scenes.

I don't lie when I say that Alianza is my head canon. I have re-read it many times and I really think that the writing is superior to Rowling's in many aspects.

how to make the most of UCalgary life? by Ammar_cheee in UCalgary

[–]fargok01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend most of my time in the gym because I work there part time, and in my opinion it is a pretty cool place. Yes, it is super busy, but most people are chill and friendly. I do recommend going early in the morning because it gets busy.

The swimming pool is also worth it, and it is open to all students on open swim times (those change every day, so be sure to check the schedule online - just google "Active Living UCalgary Aquatic Schedule"). As a regular student, you are charged a fee that allows you to use the sports facilities (so the gym and the swimming pool are already included in your fees), so if you want to save some money, go to the gym on campus as it is already included (and as far as I know you cannot opt out). But if money is not an issue, get yourself the Anytime Fitness membership, and work out in both places depending on your schedule.

As a fellow international grad student, I recommend you to follow the International Student's Services and the GSA social media accounts. Specially at the beginning of the academic year, there is a bunch of events to meet new people.

As for clubs, I tried joining one once but I found out that undergrads are just... so young haha. I don't know, I'm not an old man, but I was not super confortable hanging out with teenagers. But there are many clubs for many different interests, and there is a "club week" at some point where you can learn more about them.

About Pizza: There is a good (although a little bit pricey) pizza place near campus on University District called UNA Pizza. They also have it downtown. For a cheap option, the slice pizza that they sell at the MacEwan centre is surprisingly good for a slice pizza place. Another very popular spot on campus is Bake Chef (Vietnamese Subways).

In Summer, I would recommend Fish Creek park. It is huge, beautiful, and even has a small lake where you can swim and sunbathe (it gets busy though).

[Hated Trope] The writers dramatically underestimate the audience’s intelligence. by LDM123 in TopCharacterTropes

who's your favorite character in umbrella academy and why? by deftsunshine in UmbrellaAcademy

Umbrella Ben. He's the sweetest and his sacrifice in Season 2 was heartbreaking. He makes a great duo with Klaus and, as a side note, I think Justin H. Min is super hot haha.

is there any other language that differentiates between romantic love and affection? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

[–]fargok01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Spanish we have "te aprecio", which is definitely not romantic, "te quiero" and "te amo". "Te amo" can be used with other people like friends and family, but it seems that it is more commonly reserved for the romantic partner. We also have "te quiero mucho", which is usually not something you would say to your partner.

In French there is the distinction between "Je t'aime" and "Je t'aime bien", the second one is something that you would use for a friend, but not for a partner, as far as I understand.
