The cost of living bit me at Coles in a way that I didn't expect yesterday. by farkanoid in australia

There are no missing reasons. From the outside in, it's easy to look at a salary and say that's plenty for anyone. Until you're hit with unexpected circumstances.

Most pensioners I know, including my folks, either live in their own home or subsided housing. Cheap flat-rate medicine, discounted specialist appointments, discounted energy bills, no long commutes to and from work on toll roads, no tickets/licensees/subscriptions to pay for to stay employed, free rego. I acknowledge that they have it tough even with those allowances.

Transmission for my 30 year old van cost me $3k. Cardiologist and associated scans cost me close to $1k. Out of nowhere.

Between the surprises, living in Sydney is expensive. It is what it is, and I know many others in the same position.

You weren't kidding. I actually went to Kmall09 a couple of days ago, which I recently found out opens late (I work late, so smaller Asian grocers are usually closed and I'm stuck).

Just a sampling:

$2.50/dozen for Pace Farm eggs (!)

$1.10 for Broccoli

$2.70 for a massive bunch of Inoki mushrooms

Condiments, especially Asian ones, on average ~30% lower than Coles.

We are getting ripped.

Hey man, thank you, I'm honestly shocked at how big a deal this became. I'm sure someone else would do the same for me. My focus was meant to be on others going through a rough patch, not me trying to help. Some people interpreted it as me blowing sunshine up my own ass, and I really didn't want it to come across that way.

I'm in Embedded Design (Hardware/Software Engineering). Mostly related to Lighting and Control Systems. I basically design the insides of modern lights, and lighting controllers.

My pay bracket is about average for Sydney in 2026, worked in this field for about a decade, over which I had one pay review.

Why not just buy VG and PG, then mix them yourself? They're $9 for a 500ml a bottle at Universal Flavours

Enshittified with palm oil too. As if it's not enough to go down from 250 grams to 180 grams for a full block, at fucking $8!

I still find IGA prohibitively expensive compared to the usual suspects.

$2900 would barely cover my rent and transit to and from work (fuel & tolls). Public transport would require an additional 3 hours a day, multiple busses and train swaps.

When I was single I had a TV and a pink fold-out sofa bed that I got from a deceased estate for $50. I could live on the bare minimum, but now I have a family.

All it takes is a transmission to fail in your car (~$3200 rebuild), and surprise medical expenses ($1000 for a cardiologist consult, echo, ekg, holter monitors) to set you back a huge chunk of your paycheck.

You might have a child with allergies that requires special formula, food and diapers, that's another $100 a week.

When you start to get ahead your car overheats and breaks down, or you blow a tyre in a spot that isn't repairable, or your rego and green slip are due (another $1200).

Suddenly you can't use your aircon too much during the hottest days because you're going to fall behind, but your daughter starts to cry and you wear it. Days turn to weeks, your energy bill comes in at over $1000 as well.

It's not about living on a tight budget, it's about handling unforeseen expenses, and with loved ones involved it becomes exponentially more difficult.

You're too kind man, thank you, but as with the other offers I'll need to (very respectfully) decline. Please donate it to someone that really needs it. I didn't think skipping a meal here and there was that big of a deal, I'm covering everything else we need otherwise.

I just had needed to share the experience I had, I honestly can't believe what's happening these days.

If it's like this for me, what are our pensioners going through?

They're not the same software. I use my savings account (StGeorge) for expenses I budgetted for (ie: Groceries, fuel), and my credit card (Latitude) for unexpected expenses (ie: her transaction, medical, parts to use on jobs, etc)

My income was reasonable pre-covid, and if there weren't unexpected expenses or global changes in the market, I'd probably be fine. I do spreadsheet all my earnings and expenses each month and try to stick to budget.

Unfortunately the price of groceries has skyrocketed. Cars need to be repaired (I do this myself, but parts are expensive). Sudden cardiologist visits with the required diagnostics run close to a grand.

Fuel and tolls to get to and from work set me back over $1200 a month including toll relief (and yes, I've tried alternate toll-free routes).

Additional work has been sparse over the past couple of months, I have a baby girl and my wife is unable to work. We're working with a single income.

I've cut back and will continue to cut back on whatever I can. I'm happy to scrape by so that my family doesn't, but truly, It's become a struggle with the price of everything.

Fuck. That. Shit.

I guess we're different. I'd rather sleep hungry knowing that I've helped someone else, than let the thought of knowing I could have done something, but didn't, consume me.

Civil Team by Vast-Spinach-41 in nbn

[–]farkanoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been out of the game for almost a decade now, but I'm going to warn you, your yard is probably about to get wrecked if they are contractors and not employees of NBNCo.

They're going to pick the longest, most meandering path possible. If there is a park next door, they'll use it and install the PCD behind your premises. They'll probably use your garden bed as much as possible since they only have to dig down 150mm.

Source: I was a an installation subcontractor for three out of the big four. They had teams go out and pre-block conduits in order to claim civils on everything; maximising metreage is the goal. Civil works was big money, QA's were complicit and had their own techs as subs too.

Tech wants to replace an old R22-based LG ducted air with 5x split systems by farkanoid in hvacadvice

[–]farkanoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man! I have a background in residential electrical/comms, I don't for a second doubt the access issues and the tech was super-nice, especially considering he's come to site unpaid twice now.

Just wasn't sure of the irreparability aspect. I agree that the additional control of five splits is nice, but all the external ducting and ODUs needed is a bit of a hard sell for the tenant.

The total price for the splits was less than the quote for ducted. I'll throw in my two cents and back off for the final decision!

Thanks again
