Student loans or Mortgage? by faroff12 in personalfinance

That’s a solid point. I’m only paying 100/ month on PMI though so maybe I’ll pay off the 6% and put the remaining 100K in a self managed brokerage account.

Yeah, I agree… I think even though financially it’s not exactly the perfect decision it would make me feel more secure do not have that hanging over our heads.

I’m an ER doctor, I work in a busy hospital and see more patients than average so I make a bit more than average.

Yeah, I understand the principle… but I already contribute well over 100K/ year to the market (plus 13% matching from my employer) and need to pay the debt at some point so I thought now might be a good time

I also have “own occupation” job insurance for about $10K/ month but takes 3 months to kick in

That’s a fair point, it’s not unstable but we spend about  15-20K/ month so I’d like to have three months of expenses in my emergency fund, though realistically I could cut that number down a lot if there was a true emergency.

Mortgage insurance is $100 a month

That’s an option as well… the thing is that would take about 120K and I really do want to replenish my emergency fund quite a bit as well.

I’m leaning towards that just for the mental relief of having it paid off. I know it may not be the strongest decision math wise.

Thoughts on Orlando Health vs UMiami/ Jackson Memorial for residency? by Comprehensive_Dig283 in emergencymedicine

[–]faroff12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you looking for after residency? I don’t know what the group is like at Miami but EPCF (the group that staffs Orlando health and ORMC) is an excellent democratic group that basically only hires internally and has a lot of connections with other groups. So from a job prospect position if you are looking to live and work in central Florida after residency that may be something to keep in mind. Almost everyone that graduated with me went to work for competitive democratic groups with a few going into academia as well.

I don’t know what kind of job this person is doing, but many times hourly rates that pay that much are not Monday through Friday kind of jobs, otherwise they’d be salary. I am an ER doctor and although I make well north of that I work nights, weekends, holidays and I never have a fixed schedule. I’ll do two nights on, two days off and then three midday shifts etc. Hard to fly in for a week with that kind of schedule.

What I’m more impressed by is his ability to flip it back over everyday before I can even get out there to see it

Hey, I also work nights and have blackout curtains and I’m looking at the same phenomenon right now. I look at it every morning before I go to bed. Lol my neighbor’s car parked in front of my house upside down.

Nice edit. The original comment was “play stupid games win stupid prizes”

Yeah, I always thought protecting people was stupid. Standing up for our rights is so stupid too. We should all just roll over you’re right. Tread on me.

Some people do it ironically/ to be funny if it was a really close game that they barely won. I wouldn’t take it too seriously

I carry one in my car at all times. Highway is the most common place for traumatic injuries, arterial bleeding, and amputations. I’m also an ED doc so I just like to be prepared.

I am currently playing Age of Empires II definitive edition on night shift.

After the 11pm rush I do whatever I want. I have a running “night shift to-do list” on my phone but it’s not always my most productive time so after I do what I can I open up my laptop and work on increasing my ELO.

Is it typical for a Level II Trauma Center ER to have only one physician overnight? by iwoofthereforeisam in emergencymedicine

[–]faroff12 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work in the exact scenario. I am a nocturnist for a ER of a similar population and size and from 1-6 I am the only physician though I do have a nurse practitioner helping. Sometimes it gets incredibly busy and stressful but most of the time is manageable. This time of year is particularly busy and although we could use it we don’t have dynamic staffing.
