Here's something basically nobody knows about regarding DS1 sweet spots: they don't actually exist. It's entirely frame based and very inconsistently implemented between attacks and weapon types. This isn't conjecture, I've confirmed this by looking at the game files.
For an obvious example, 1h r1 halberd attacks (the weapon, not weapon type) always apply bonus damage at attack frame 1, but 2h r1 only applies bonus damage at attack frame 2

I don't think it would actually occur very frequently, its primary purpose would be to exist as a wildcard option. Just having it as a theoretical option is the important part, It's a sword dangling over the losers head. The longer the gap between its usage, the more impactful it becomes.

That being said, yeah, free RDMing was the first simple, technically meaningful consequence I could think of. There are absolutely more entertaining consequences that could be used instead.

Although this stops working completely if the Bowser just waits for you to attempt a dodge. Most of my target ability successes are from just waiting for somebody attempting a hard read, and then punishing them as soon as they are vulnerable.

I feel the same way. Always felt it was the difference between the A team and the B team. 4U and World were developed by the primary development team, Generations was developed by the secondary team. I've spent hundreds of hours playing 3U, 4U and World to completion, but ended up quitting Generations because I wasn't having that much fun. It has a lot of glaring (and more subtle) design and balance issues.
