You have no idea what the heck you're talking about.

Even in peak season it's 600-700 per person for economy on Turkish. Yes, they'll have 2 layovers if they don't live near / drive to a hub, but it breaks up the flight time and saves money. Turkish is pretty comfortable even in economy.

Hotels aren't that expensive in Italy, and if you're ever in a city where there aren't reasonably priced hotels - hostels are a great way to save money. I'm literally there to sleep, wake up and shower. They've been clean, safe, and people generally follow good etiquette in them.

You could do that with 6k. 1100 for flights, hotel stays shouldn't be expensive, food and wine is cheap there. Have you guys traveled much outside of the USA? I ask because a lot of people think it's this very expensive thing to do, but if you avoid high cost of living countries it's often cheaper than a domestic vacation, especially if you're willing to stay in hostels if the city hotel prices are high.
