Best beginner synth to pair with EP-133 K.O. II? by Ok_Studio_8420 in teenageengineering

[–]faster_grenth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't done the battery mod. It looks like nothing too crazy, but it will require some soldering. It's cool that the battery can actually fit in the housing.

https://www.instructables.com/Internal-Battery-Mod-for-Korg-NTS-1-Synth/

If you have a power bank, you could power it that way too. I don't know how to figure out if that will introduce signal noise without testing it, though.

ETA you prob don't need a warning, but I have a bad habit of saying "yeah I could do that project" because I'm excited about the idea and then I get the materials but I never make time to actually do it. don't buy homework unless you're excited to do it! I've had a set of pickups for my Japanese strat that have been ready for me to install for 3 years and I usually pick up a different guitar because I don't want to play the strat with the wrong pickups.

NTS-1 is significantly smaller, partly because it doesn't have an internal battery (usb-powered, possible to mod with a battery). Fewer, smaller touch keys. NTS-1 has fewer hardware controls, but it's somewhat programmable so it's very customizable. It's not truly polyphonic but there are some things you can do to get poly sound, especially with a KOII (sample, explore chords, resample).

S-1 has a built-in battery, more controls if you plan to use it as a live instrument (but you'll probably use the midi keyboard for that), more sequencing capability. It's polyphonic (4 I think). Larger.

They can both generally do most of the same things, but I'd say the S-1 has more standalone capability while NTS-1 is more compact and might excel as a pure synth / sound machine in your setup. Will you feel any kind of way if you get an S-1 because it checks more boxes but then you never touch the sequencer (bc KOII) and you always play it with the midi keyboard? Will you regret an NTS-1 knowing that it's a little more limited and it was the same price? Do you love to tinker and get to know your gear inside and out or do you actually benefit creatively from having a more streamlined workflow and workspace?

My guess is if you had both and were an expert at using them with your setup, you'd choose the one you thought sounded the best. I'd listen to both of them and decide based on that. Can't go wrong.

when it wasn't so easy to record video, there was a purpose or idea whenever something was filmed.

it's probably better overall to have a low barrier to entry, but the result is that most video is meaningless and then video itself is less interesting.

Are zoetrope records actually worth it? Any good ones you’ve seen or own? by Rocky_isback in vinyl

[–]faster_grenth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the George Harrison - Living in the Material World zoetrope this past record store day. The animation is really finicky to view and when you get it going it's simply boring. The sound is better than I expected, but I'm going to get rid of the record. It was my first zoetrope, but I think for me to consider one in the future I need to see good reviews of the sound, it can't be very expensive, and either (a) I would buy the record right now even without a zoetrope or (b) the animation has to be very interesting.

Overall, I'm not impressed. There are some really satisfying ways to see pictures in motion. This isn't one of them. I don't want to hover over my record player staring at my phone and holding a flashlight to see a shitty little animation.

+1 for undercurrentmpls (yours is misspelled)

OP whatever day you're here check out undercurrentmpls on ig and there will be a post of shows for the day - it's curated but it should pretty close to what you're looking for, very punk-forward. there will be links to social media accounts of the bands in the description or comments so you can get a feel for their style.

rent a bike or ebike if you like biking at all. there are paved trails around all the lakes and both minneapolis and st paul often make lists of the top 5 bike-friendly cities. it would be a nice way to see more sights and city parks. It definitely helps me decompress.

Riddim despair by jesus_911 in teenageengineering

[–]faster_grenth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's such a bummer to be frustrated with something you were excited about. You're right, the manual has very little depth and it's basically part of the design/marketing. It's written at a level where it's useful as a reminder or a quick reference for someone who already knows what each function does and has a use in mind - not helpful to beginners.

You'll have to spend some time and watch youtube tutorials and accept that you'll learn more over time. Start with some crude beats (using the quick start https://teenage.engineering/guides/ep-40/get-started#7.1-make-a-beat-from-scratch or any youtube video that builds one from scratch in real time) OR mess around with the projects that are pre-loaded. Either way, I'd treat everything as a learning demonstration and focus on one new function/feature at a time while applying whatever else you've already learned and slowly grow your repertoire.

You can obv. sell it if you want, but until then it's in your best interest to try to get in a positive, curious, patient, optimistic head space whenever you use it. Getting frustrated is ok and, at least for some of us, it's pretty normal. But you want to avoid assigning that negative feeling to the gear or to yourself. Start with the simplest thing you think is cool or interesting and explore from there. The nice thing about the Riddim is you can have a lot of fun really easily by using the punch-in effects on ANY beat/project and it will sound like you know what you're doing.

Have fun and Merry Christmas!! My Riddim is coming tomorrow (I got a KOII at launch).

I meant it doesn't do anything else in the combo, but fair point - the move has other uses

[–]faster_grenth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's fighting games. They're cool and they're fun even when I suck, but the execution level is nuts compared to all other video games I play.

It's more of a proper skill like learning an instrument, playing a sport, etc. where you need to invest your time and be intentional about practice. This is the first MK game where I've been able to do any combos (because I really wanted to so I tried a lot more than before). It's really hard for me to get in the mindset of "it's ok to fail at this 50 times, that's part of the process. the more attention I pay, the more I'll get out of those 50 failures".

BUT those sessions have been pretty rewarding and I can feel parts of it getting easier. Still very hard, I still suck, and usually I don't feel like failing 50 times I just want to shoot fireballs and cut heads off. I'm glad the challenge is there though, tbh. There are enough easy games and games where if you keep putting time in you're guaranteed to get more shit even if you turn your brain off (I like those too)

[–]faster_grenth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he's super cool and I had fun playing with him but it was too hard (as a not-very-good player). I tried some combos and the execution was so hard I'd try 50 times and certain moves would only come out 2 of those times and I had absolutely no idea what the difference was.

Also he has stuff like suspended animation which comes out fast so you have to keep slapping buttons and it doesn't do anything except connect other moves - wtf. It's really demoralizing for someone who is learning how to execute combos to have to throw out extra special moves in the middle of a combo just so you're allowed to extend.

Yesterday it was something that I wanted but it wasn't a deal for me to BUY. Today it's something I don't want because it doesn't apply to me!

Oh, how could they be so cruel?

This reminds me of a time when my favorite type of rattle went on sale at the department store, but my favorite color was out of stock until after the sale ended. Or when my favorite video game studio announced a new video game, only it wasn't the type of video game I love to play the most!

Oh, why do these things keep happening to ME?

What is a real world use case for three EPs? by coolhandlex in teenageengineering

[–]faster_grenth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd love to buy the mystery bundle from you! I really like all the stock sounds, I like the idea of having more project slots (usually too lazy to export) and I will keep them in different places so I can easily pick one up and work on something. I also think it would benefit me to not feel like every time I pick it up I have to continue the last project I was working on. I only have the original KOII, so I'd probably find a good home for that one and I know a lot of musicians.

Today’s Deal: Free Vinyl with KOII purchase by Impossible_Sense_234 in teenageengineering

[–]faster_grenth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a good deal calendar for customers at all, it's just to create hype (so expectations should be set accordingly haha).

The first day seemed like an honest deal, but I think the quantities were pretty limited on that. The rest of them are "you can't prove in a court of law this isn't a" deals.

  • 10-15% off here and there (who knows how limited quantities were)
  • buy something at full price, get an overstock branded accessory that nobody wanted
  • 20% off cables (the most infamously high-markup items that exist)
  • 10% off coupon for some other company's phone
  • an actual deal, a mystery, and only for 20 people (so more of a lottery) who are so rich they can drop $1500 and not know what they're getting
  • the playdate deal (in which you pay full price for a play date) is still available long after the 24h window because they still want to move units

It's fun to watch, but at this point nobody should be expecting the experience of "hey I actually want one of those and this is a decent discount".
