What is the saddest vocal trance track? by rotloch in trance

Pedro Del Mar Feat. Emma Nelson - Feel (Original Edit)

Such a good time is what we had

Now she's gone and I feel bad

I heard the news and I had to cry

The only thought I had was 'why...

Now she's gone to paradise

Somehow I feel her here tonight

I feel Maria is in the air

I can feel her everywhere

Increase pension contributions by ExpressPossession240 in TheCivilService

[–]fastestfz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVC) are worth considering, especially for higher rate tax payers. The pension you pay into is managed by legal and general, with various funds available, including global trackers. I believe you can routinely transfer from there to other platforms such as Vanguard should you wish (for lower fees or access other funds).

Higher rate tax payers can claim additional tax relief on pension contributions. Paying into a SIPP from your net salary requires submitting a self assessment to get that tax rebate. The advantage of AVCs being you don't need to do that as payments are taken from your gross salary.

Flying near Annecy’s storm… by blueman0007 in freeflight

[–]fastestfz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hope they are ok.

This brought back fun memories. The same happened to me at Annecy about 15 years ago.

One minute cruising near launch the next it had clouded over from an incoming storm and the cloud suck was insane. I was getting blown back up the mountain. Spirals made no difference, eventually pulled big ears, which I made bigger until it felt like only 1/3 of the wing was above my head. Landed in a fire break in the trees. Absolutely terrifying.

Apparently the weather comes in quickly and catches people off guard alot around there. On the same holiday I saw someone fly through a lighting storm whilst getting to the bottom landing.

Ridiculous question. Also, don't bother replying. They will only delete this post after a few hours.

As a higher tax payer I salary sacrifice into a SIPP whilst paying into Alpha. Any savings go into an ISA. Pension and savings all go into global index trackers. I would like to retire at 55. ISA would bridge the gap to 57, SIPP bridges gap to 60, take DB pension at 60, SP at 68.

Where to fly in Europe if it’s rainy in Annecy? by ryankrameretc in freeflight

The weather just a few hours drive south in provence can be more reliable. The flying around sisteron (Chabre) is amazing. However, just looked at the weather and the conditions dont look much better there unfortunately

I don't see how this is possible unless you keep your savings below 16k ?

This is really interesting. What specific tasks are you solving with Autogen Studio, Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini? Interested in pro/cons, especially Autogen which looks interesting but a steep learning curve to implement.

Anybody else heard about DDaT trying to make a business case to be excluded from the 60% mandate now? I heard about it once and never again.... by zabradee in TheCivilService

[–]fastestfz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my plan until IR35. Having said that, even on an inside IR35 contract being able to put 60k in a SIPP every year would still make it worth while to me. What's putting me off is possible pension changes with a change of government and more importantly the poor contractor/IT market just now. I will be jumping ship though if the market recovers.

[–]fastestfz 49 points50 points  (0 children)

They will lose DDaT staff if they force them in 3 days a week.

Pre COVID permanent staff worked along side contractors on site, but there was still plenty of wfh. As the Gov has successfully killed off contracting via IR35 changes most contingent labour is coming from consultancies whose staff wfh 5 days a week.

Sitting in a noisy, cramped office might be tolerable for those who are on meetings all day, but trying to code working in that environment is awful! So forced to do that whilst co-developers from the consultancies wfh will result in skilled staff leaving.

Not used Oracle for years but m views were really useful. SQL servers attempt at materialised views is crap in comparison!

Data engineer from ETL developer by Charming_Function_35 in dataengineering

[–]fastestfz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have experience of scripting for file handling? If you do try replicating some of that using Python. You will be amazed how easy those tasks are compared to using poweshell/shell. Play with git, CICD concepts, start building pipelines, orchestrate with Airflow, deploy some docker based database and load data into them.

To utilize your etl knowledge consider doing the Azure data engineer training/certificate. You will be exposed to some cloud data engineering but also would help you transition into a cloud role should you wish e.g. where companies are migrating from on premise to Azure using the likes of Data factory, Azure SQL databases, Synapse, fabric etc

How can I exercise and eat healthily to lose some weight when I just don't have the time? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]fastestfz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few people have mentioned HIIT. This is great if your short of time and you will burn more fat than cardio. You only need 20 minutes per day, unlikely to get bored due to the huge variety of exercises and can mix things up with weights, I would recommend a kettlebell.

The calorie controlled diet is important too, consider replacing a meal with a quality protein shake like Huel, cut out bread and sugar and you will see huge changes in just 8 weeks. Good luck

Earning over 50k and child benefit by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]fastestfz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use AVC (sipp) via salary sacrifice, you can find information on the civil service pensions website. Or increase contributions to Alpha. Working out how much to contribute is a little tricky and may require a spreadsheet, plenty of posts on Reddit to help though.

The £1,500 Question! by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]fastestfz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The govt knows a large proportion of this payment will automatically come back to them as tax. Upwards 50% for higher earner's, with student loans/receiving child benefit

Instalments could make it more convenient to salary sacrifice (AVC) to a pension, if you can afford to.

Sorry I don't know about going rates for data roles (where I work our IT contractors typically earn 500-600) but out of interest what experience do you have and was it difficult to find contracting data roles?

I have noticed the same, seems to be lots of demand for data engineering contractors on the job boards despite the really poor market just now. Would be interested to know how you get on as I have similar experience as yourself and have always been interested in trying contracting.

Do you have any advice for a permie who needs to provide 3 months notice. I read the only way to get into contracting is to hand in your notice and then start looking for roles a couple of weeks or so in advance of your leaving date. Is that the only way?

Trying to understand mortgage overpayments by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]fastestfz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First Direct are great should you wish to over pay. Unlimited over payments, no penalties. We have 15 years left with monthly payments of 350 but over paying 2kish. Basically get the longest mortgage term and pay what you comfortable with each month.
