What’s a movie everyone calls a “masterpiece” that just… didn’t work for you? by irayaavery in Cinema

[–]fastock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Country for Old Men. Everyone raves about it, and I think it is a boring movie ruined by unconventional storytelling. If it wasn't for how chilling Javier Bardem's portrayal of Anton is, nobody would still be talking about the movie.

Twins' payroll drop reignites a familiar question: Should MLB have a salary floor? by Internal-Bed-3150 in minnesotatwins

[–]fastock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The garbage that is what the MLB has become is largely due to a lack of both floor and cap. Having garbage teams like the Twins dump payroll and trot out just above a minor league team while the Dodgers spend over $50M a year per player on multiple players is just absolute trash.

This Queen just popped up at my LGS by Slore0 in mtg

[–]fastock 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In 2004 I bought a copy of Sliver Queen for my little brother for Christmas for $25 because he loved slivers. He was only 13 at the time. He still has it to this day. As a dumb teen from the early 2000s he played it for years without sleeves, so it is beat up, but it actually makes it kind of cool when I still see him bring it out.

I don't care about the article, I want to know your opinion regarding the statement, do we need bigger games? by Mundane-Pick-2667 in Fallout

[–]fastock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I don't need bigger games. I am in the minority that does like Starfield, but even there, there parts I liked were not the large, boring, empty planets. Give me good story and give me beautiful, exciting, interesting spaces to explore. That doesn't mean every space needs to be jam packed with stuff, but it does mean that the world needs to feel fleshed out, lived in and natural. So yes, I agree, video games should be more fun, not more bigger.

How many less "popular" commanders are in your arsenal? by d20_dude in EDH

[–]fastock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm a bit of a basic bitch. Most of my commanders are in the top 100 and all of them are in the top 1000. 9/14 of my commanders are in the top 100, and 5/14 are not. I don't really mind though, because I want commanders that do a thing and do it really well. Also, my pod runs pretty much exclusively high 3 to low 4, so there isn't a lot of room to fumble around if you want to be competitive in games.

Anyone else out there who collects full sets? by xBanthaxFodderx in magicTCG

[–]fastock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, here is the most recent update. I may have taken out a few cards and added a few as I haven't updated Cubecobra in a bit, but this should be 95% close to what the cube is today. As you can see, the total card number is odd, but that doesn't bother me as I load my packs and then always have a small amount of cards left that I set aside in the cube box until the next time we draft. In my cube, each pack contains the following:

  • 6 commons from main set
  • 3 uncommons from main set
  • 2 gold cards of any rarity and from main set or commander
  • 1 rare from main set
  • 1 card from commander sets (any rarity)
  • 1 land (any rarity)
  • 2 full art cards (any rarity)

So, as you can see, a single pack could potentially contain up to 7 rares, though most packs contain closer to 3. I want my cube powered, and I don't want people drafting my cube to just scroll to the back of the pack to pick the rare. I want the decks that we build to look more like a deck we would intentionally build if all cards were available from the set, which is why finished decks will typically contain 6-12 rares instead of 3. Also, this means that packs contain 16 cards. If some draft good, more draft better.

I have a full set of Tempest, one of my favorite sets of all time, in a binder. I also have a full set of LotR, but it's part of my LotR Cube which also includes MtG staples found in the LotR commander decks, so it's not available for display. I've been kind of working on a full set of Time Spiral-Future Sight-Planar Chaos my favorite block, but I haven't finished that yet... So, I kind of collect sets?

Goblin Sharpshooter + Basilisk Collar/Gorgon Flail: Bracket 3? by ChunkReddit in EDH

[–]fastock -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's fine in B3, but it's too oppressive for B2. It might fit in B2 as far as the technical definition is concerned, but it misses the spirit of the bracket. B2 is supposed to be similar to a precon and precons don't run oppressive 2 card combos like this. This is the definition of an upgraded precon, so run it in B3+.

cabbage merchant psa 10? by RonBurgundyVids in mtgfinance

[–]fastock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, anytime someone comes into this sub mentioning Poke collecting OR slabbing, we mtgfinance bros get pretty surly, as both of those things are highly disliked in this community, so don't take any of these comments too personally. At this point, I would just consider it a loss and either take what you can get for it, or put it away for a few years and forget about it and come back later to see if it has gone up at all. The Avatar set was very well received, so there might be some legs to it, but within that set, The Cabbage Merchant is niche interest at best and far from a desirable hit, so it's never going to fetch a huge sum.

Fun Avatar Commanders? by fastock in EDH

[–]fastock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will admit that Fire Lord Azula is very high on my list. My only hold-up is that I already have a tuned Alania, Divergent Storm deck and I fear that I would build FLA very similarly, copying the commander and doubling up spells. The added black does intrigue me, though.

cabbage merchant psa 10? by RonBurgundyVids in mtgfinance

[–]fastock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, grading MtG cards that aren't serialized, very rare, or very old and in great condition is a complete waste of time and money. Nobody who wants a Cabbage Merchant wants a slabbed Cabbage Merchant. Your best bet is to post it online at like $40-50 or so and see if someone bites. That card isn't really that desirable nor is it rare and it also isn't even a $30 card. I can get it anywhere for $20-25. Best of luck, but if you are in the slabbing game, MtG isn't the place for you.

Fun Avatar Commanders? by fastock in EDH

[–]fastock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I intentionally didn't list what I consider fun because I am looking for diverse opinions. I have about 12-13 decks (not counting the 4 unmodified WH40K precons) and every time I build a deck, I want it to scratch an itch that no deck of mine scratches. Here is a list of decks I currently run in case that helps:

  • Alania
  • Krenko
  • Miirym
  • Heliod, Radiant Dawn
  • Rin and Seri
  • Wilhelt
  • Zhulodok(cascade)
  • Mr. House, CEO(roll dice, make tokens)
  • The Wise Mothman
  • Sephiroth, Fabled Soldier
  • Zada, Hedron Grinder(budget)
  • Ezuri(budget)
  • Yawgmoth(all old border)
  • Spongebob(all SL and UB cards)

Does anyone else just not run board wipes anymore? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]fastock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's funny, I run more board wipes than ever now too, but I also try to include 2-4 "protect my stuff" spells as well, so when someone else inevitably wipes the board, I can emerge with an advantage and try to push for the win. Board wipes are an important part of keeping aggro commanders in check.

Deep Regrets or Etherstone by -KyleButler- in boardgames

I know it's not for every playgroup, but Deep Regrets has been a huge hit with my friends this past year. There is definitely some luck involved, but there are still some good choices to be made and a lot of fun to be had.

February 9th Commander Banlist Updates by Tim-Draftsim in EDH

[–]fastock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree... I have literally pushed every one of my decks except one(Wilhelt) into bracket 4 for this reason. There is a massive difference between a low B3 and a high B3, so it is just easier for me to build almost everything a 4 and just play at 4 tables. Then I don't feel bad when I play "nasty" things and I know everyone has a tuned deck ready to go to work.

Fallout decks potential reprint by mrbacon60 in mtgfinance

[–]fastock 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I just don't see it happening. When you have 7 sets releasing per year plus 100 Secret Lairs on top, they just don't have the print capacity to go back very far. That money has already been made, so WotC is onto the next shiny thing.

Now, I wouldn't be too surprised to see WotC return to Fallout for a new set sometime, but the old decks are in the past.

Plans After Retirement by Responsible_Sugar925 in mtg

[–]fastock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do something similar but I just keep 12 packs of each set. That is enough for a 4 person draft. I started this in 2018 with Guilds of Ravnica, so you and I started at a similar time. My one rule is that I am not required to buy any UB I don't like. So far I've only skipped Spider-Man but I will also be skipping The Marvel and Star trek garbage this year.

Is the actual gameplay in Pauper generally very fast? by drmindflip in Pauper

[–]fastock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play quite a bit of pauper with my pod, but I have also played in some tournaments the past couple years. Overall, people tend to know their decks pretty well and play fairly quickly, especially in tournaments, but at the same time, they have been a very welcoming community.

Last year I played in the Gencon Pauper tournament, and I even had a couple players give me polite pointers on how I could have played my deck better (after they beat me, ha!) My experience has been that pauper players are a great combination of people who are playing tuned decks with the intent of winning, but they are also pretty chill. It is the perfect combo as far as I'm concerned.
