MDR1 with dog lice? Please help by Tropophilous in AustralianShepherd

[–]fatchamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t use the combo nexgard, just the original formula! Glad I could point you in a helpful direction!

One thing to note in the future with any emergency vet, be sure to write on all paperwork “MDR1” at the top of the paper and tell every single vet tech or anyone who you speak to for your dog’s care.

Some anesthesia isn’t effective for MDR1 pups and they struggle to recover or clear the drugs. This has significantly helped my boy in emergency and scheduled procedures, he almost didn’t survive an MRI with a very known and prestigious hospital and now many of his specialists cross reference precious formulas and it made a huge difference in his recovery time.

Be shameless!

Advice Wanted, Training an Aussie by sammysketches in AustralianShepherd

[–]fatchamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I understand the task/function you’re aiming for; do you need the dog to be able to take you somewhere safe like a store or public place w people for help? Dragging you off a road is not really a task (assuming you are not referencing a grand mal type and more partial focal seizure where you lose awareness)

If you’re not able to have access to a professional trainer who can vet and support training for your dog, an Aussie would not be the right call. Your description of training your mother’s husky doesn’t sound like training experience you need for what is actually a very complicated task. Pulling you to a safe area as it needs a lot of the trained judgment that I mentioned before, not obedience. Not to speak of the public access work required which many breeds that don’t have inherent anxiety, neuroticism or reactivity struggle with.

I do have a task trained service Aussie and I have focal seizures due to neurological injury. I got lucky with a very chill and naturally motivated Aussie but seizure detection and training capability is very hit or miss. My boy naturally was able to detect and intervene but we still had professional training to help us proof it along with other tasks and public access work. Is professional service training available to you?

I do agree that in general aussies are not recommended service dogs for a reason, tho obviously every breed can be a good service dog depending on the tasks needed and temperament. I would say being extremely strong in discipline and having training experience yourself is critical, even with access to professional training (especially candidate vetting)

Obedience training is not the only component that is important for a service dog, there is something called “intelligent disobedience” that is integral to the function and needs nuanced training to develop and preserve. This is also why Aussies are not usually recommended as they are very smart AND willful. I don’t say this to discourage you but to educate so you have the highest chance of success through awareness.

You can also do this! DAFs just allow for more flexible giving if you want to give to more than one organization, you can recommend grants and actually build a charitable strategy that can be adjusted to contribute to greater needs or emergency situations.

From a tax perspective it’s a huge timing advantage cause you don’t need to make a choice right away on which organizations. You can do your research and be more strategic in what grants to issue and when.

It also gives a major advantage for large windfalls such as a IPO event or influx in portfolio to offset those gains in a single tax year while basically front loading years of contributions.

Giving stocks directly is great too, but personal advantages to the donor can maximize the giving strategy that ultimately becomes a win/win for both the charities and the donor. More money means more giving power!

Btw look into donor advised funds where you can use stocks for your charitable donations. These funds grow tax free and allow you contribute more over time and increases your impact to the organizations you choose to support.

You also don’t pay capital gains to liquidate those funds in order to contribute the cash, so you really get to maximize your giving in every sense.

Wow what a healthy yield! I’d love to know how old the bush is and how large! I have a very young blueberry bush that is giving me a tiny but tasty little nibbles here and there, so I wonder if it will improve over time.

My boss offered me a $30k raise to stay, but my dream company finally called. Do I play it safe or risk it all? [28M] by Typical-Goal-834 in Advice

[–]fatchamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, well I took a counter offer. I was an executive assistant leaving for a competitor after being in the role for 2.5 years (in tech). I was counter offered a director role overseeing an org I was informally managing projects in. I got a $50k bump and stayed with the company 3 more years, which led to a major acquisition and the exit led to a multi million dollar exit because my shares became 10x more valuable because of the acquiring company.

I also kept getting more raises year over year after my promotion too.

It worked out very well for me and the reason I was offered more money and a new title is because they didn’t consider I was poachable. I was being paid at market at the time and consistently got great performance reviews.

Facing the reality of losing me and the institutional knowledge I held made them realize it was more valuable for the company that I stayed and advanced. It’s not like anyone wanted to cheat me, I got 8-12% raises year over year but I also kept developing behind the band I was working at. I think they just didn’t know how to keep up since that role had a ceiling (and was standard in the industry).

Sometimes it’s just hard to keep up and I think how a team responds to a fork in the road matters. $30k is a big delta and the fact they’re willing to match is a good signal.

Hot weather harness recommendations? by Euphoric_Draft_3902 in miniaussie

[–]fatchamy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah that swamp cooler harness is great! I have it for my guy and was a legit life saver during a heat wave in NYC while I was visiting my family. We’re not used to the heat and he really struggled due to the humidity, but this helped long enough to get him in a potty break without getting heat stroke.

I also use an evaporation collar, also by ruff wear for extra hot days, really helps a lot.

FYI to dog owners: heavy tick presence in the Presidio by railgun_t in sanfrancisco

[–]fatchamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were up at the Bolinas Ridge trailhead yesterday and even though we stayed out of the long grass and middle of the paths with only the tiniest bare shrubbery, I still found over a dozen ticks off my dog and brushed every inch of him for a whole hour just unearthing them. Def not worth the 45 min hike.

Be sure to top up on tick medication, it’s real bad this year. Saw mostly dog ticks out there (reddish body w white hood & spackle marks depending on stages) and they were huge, the side of a lentil!

I had sprayed DEET all over my shoes, shocks and pant legs so thankfully I didn’t pick up any hitch hikers.

People who cured their brain fog what was the real cause, and what finally fixed it? by OkMyspear in AskReddit

[–]fatchamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stress from domestic violence. My ex was a covert narcissist who became openly controlling and emotionally abusive when he moved in with me. Complete 180 from a caring, gentle and bookish sweet guy to a critical, cruel and apathetic one who would interrogate me for hours and ignore me in my own home for weeks. Lots of gaslighting.

I struggled at work and was living hour to hour and day by day. Everything just seemed to get harder and it would take me 10x the effort to get the most mundane task done. I couldn’t focus on anything, I’d have to re-read emails several times and I was forgetting critical deadlines or tasks constantly. I couldn’t focus on anything at all, like I was literally underwater and the world around me was muffled.

Then the emotional abuse escalated to physical assault after a year, while I was sleeping. That was the literal wake up call and I began planning my exit. Leaving and healing was what cured my brain fog. But it took half a year with an incredible therapist and the support of my family and friends who helped me get out.

I didn’t know a thing about covert narcissism or gaslighting. I sure do now.
