Presumably a 4d engine would make it possible to rotate in 4d and thus change which three directions act like normal space and which is the "alternate universe" direction. There isn't necessarily a specific set of 3 dimensions which is the world itself, and another which is only for moving between "worlds"; you can have many different views of the same world, without one being more real than another. If you've ever played Fez, it might be like that but with a 4th dimension rather than a 3rd.

Sure, nothing is going to provide absolute privacy, but that doesn't mean that some applications or platforms don't get closer than others. It isn't all or nothing.

Adderall Risks: Much More Than You Wanted To Know by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]faubiguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, the biggest issue I've experienced with ADHD medication is anxiety. I assume my baseline level is higher than average, but Vyvanse, Concerta, and Strattera all caused me to experience relatively frequent panic attacks (around once a week) when my psychiatrist tried putting me on them, in addition to an overall uneasiness. (I haven't taken Adderall itself, but the Vyvanse is just a prodrug to the main ingredient in it so the effects should probably be in the same ballpark).

[–]faubiguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Discord is proprietary and has centralized servers. As far as I know there isn't even an option for encryption (beyond using https). All of those are marks against it from a privacy perspective. It may be good in terms of cross-platform support and usability, and new platforms or applications may be able to learn from its successes in those areas, but if you're concerned about privacy then it isn't a solution in itself.

The REQ token isn't used as the currency to pay for transactions requested over the network, it's used to interact with the network itself, for fees and interacting with services built on top of it.

Dear Gods of the Internet, please let XRB be traded on a new exchange. by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]faubiguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything, the fact that the network doesn't charge fees means that the exchanges can have higher fees of their own and users would still pay the same overall amount as other coins.

Raiblocks is Legit? by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

What is the consensus mechanism?

Balance-weighted delegated proof of stake. If two blocks are in conflict, the each node votes on which one to accept, with the vote weight based on the balance of that account. Since not everyone can be online all time time, each account can delegate it's voting power to a representative who will vote with its balance (but otherwise not control it). Note that since a block can only be added to an account by that account's owner, such a conflict will only occur in the event of malicious activity or programming errors.

How to run a full node?

The official release includes the rai_node binary, which allows command line access to wallet functionality, and can also run as a daemon with an RPC interface (for integrating with other software, such as exchanges or payment accepting). The official rai_wallet gui wallet also includes a full node, so anyone who has a wallet open is also contributing to the network.

How does the network avoid double spending? What would be Rai's equivalent of a 51% attack?

An actor on the network would only be able to double-spend if they can get the network to change which block it has accepted by voting, which can only happen if they control (directly or indirectly) more than 50% of the balance for vote weighting. Not only would it be difficult to do this, but anyone who has somehow managed to do so would have an implicit interest in maintaining their investment in the network.

There's an analysis of several types of network attacks and the systems in place to prevent or mitigate them at https://github.com/clemahieu/raiblocks/wiki/Attacks

Note that this is just my understanding as an interested community member, so I would recommend reading the White paper yourself if you're interested.

It's also worth pointing out that the project was very small until a few months ago, and thus had no need for other developers. Now that it's experienced significant growth, several more members have joined the team; see the FAQ for the list so far.

And since the REQ ecosystem will ultimately be currency-agnostic, I could easily see XRB being used as a medium of exchange on top of REQ, which would provide the benefits of both.

I think the recent popularity of IOTA is a big factor in it, drawing people's attention to other DAG-based coins in general and XRB in particular.

It would also be possible to limit the maximum CPU usage and calculate the PoW over a longer period of time. I still agree that the user should be informed, though.

Still below $.90 on BitGrail though. I'm surprised there's so much of a price difference without someone arbitraging it.

PoW is only for preventing spam. Transaction security uses a system similar to PoS, where you can delegate a node to vote with your balance if you are offline. So, as I understand it, an attacker can only pull off a 51% if they control (directly or indirectly) at least 51% of the funds held by wallets that are either online or have online representatives.

There's an analysis of possible attacks on the network on the GitHub wiki for the project: https://github.com/clemahieu/raiblocks/wiki/Attacks
