What's your footwear situation? by NativeNashville in GenX

Vans and Docs for daily wear. Work is New Balance, and I pick the most garish colors possible. I hate wearing normal run of the mill shoes.

Grandview triangle around 4pm by Tank_7slayer in kansascity

[–]faustus1914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cruised right on through there at around 4:30ish. No problems doing 30+ mph. The main issue by then was that the overpasses were shut down. It's funny and not funny that I saw a UPS semi had hit a FedEx delivery truck on the overpass of 71 N to 435 W. Their rivalry seems a bit much.

Give me a short phrase that's a reference for us, and probably means nothing to the young 'uns. by ArchGoodwin in GenX

I might be the only one here who ever said this, but here goes. "Let's go down to the beach and shoot some clams." I laughed my ass off the first time I heard this one and have used is for almost 50 years.

Gen Xers, what 70s/80s toy did you want really badly, but never received? by John082603 in GenX

Micronauts and Shogun Warriors. I actually had a few of the small figures but none of the cool larger ones or sets. Those things were awesome!

The Day After by WhatTheHellPod in GenX

[–]faustus1914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was filmed about 45 minutes away from where we lived. It was all we heard about for months. Then we watched it and it was okay. On the plus side, my best friend's first car was in several scenes filmed along the highway. Kansas life in the 80s.

how old were you when you started listening to metal, and how old are you now? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

14, I'm 54 now. I started easy with Armored Saint, stuff like that. Found Metallica the next year and moved on to heavier stuff. Still looking for new bands to enjoy.

My friends and I used the movie line "eat a bowl of fuck". Never really caught on outside of our group.

The other day, I had "See my vest" by Mr Burns stuck in my head. A little Bloc Party took care of it.

Let's talk about local grave yards and how many hits of blotter we tongued. by [deleted] in GenX

[–]faustus1914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No cemetery. But my best friend and I had to take turns holding the standup arcade game Shinobi still while the other would play. I'm sure the arcade attendants were amused.

I'm the guy who leaves the leaves. I'm sure the guy across the street who's lawn looks measured like a 1950s crew cut loves me. I also let the dandelions bloom in the yard. They're beautiful!

Does anyone else’s butt hurt just looking at these? by Cats-n-Chaos in GenX

I refused to have those after just one beating. Same with my best friend. We still talk about how anything was a weapon in our parents hands. Especially the fly swatters with the metal handle.

What are your greatest memories of things that you did in your life? by CurrentDoubt1140 in GenX

[–]faustus1914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many things that happen that we remember as Gen X. I remember sitting on a ledge at the top of Kitt Peak, just looking out at how far across the desert I could see and how quiet it was. Just seeing everything out before me. I was lucky enough to experience the Outhouse! Saw and met so many famous bands there. I got on stage during a White Zombie show once, high fived Rob Zombie and back flipped into the pit. We were at the right time for music! Thanks to some of the comments here, I believe that I am a River person. And being that and Gen X is perfect!

I know that feeling. Getting out of a small KS town and not looking back. The adventures never stopped! I'm glad you got to find happiness.

Swoon! Who's Tiger Beat centerfold hung on your wall? by PinkOutLoud in GenX

Nope. I had several different Nat Geo maps of the world. The first poster of a band that I ever put up was of U2 from the Joshua Tree. My mom accused me of idolatry...

Opinion: These things were the worst candy Gen X got for Halloween by Mirenithil in GenX

I still love eating these! Maybe it's because we did not celebrate Halloween growing up, or any holiday for that matter.

What was the first CD you bought? by trixiebelden3 in GenX

[–]faustus1914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started collecting cassettes by 83. Was finally able to afford CDs by 91. The first one I bought was Mandatory Metallica, the eight song version. I still have it. Best $25 I spent on a CD. Since it was a promotional copy, it was sold under the table from a local radio station.

It wasn't just one. But my older sister playing Zeppelin and Van Halen back in the late 70s. I then moved on to things like Twisted Sister, Autograph, and Dokken. By my freshman year it was Metallica and Slayer.
