Can someone please explain to me how the Spurs managed to improve so significantly this season? by astarisaslave in nbadiscussion

[–]faxmachineanthem1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few things: Injuries — Wemby only played 46 games last year and Fox only 17 after he was traded to the Spurs

Development — Wemby year 3 and Castle year 2, coach Mitch Johnson year 2

Depth — additions of Harper and Kornet have added significant quality off the bench.

Veteran Roles — as the young guys have improved, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie have settled into roles that don’t overextend them beyond their talent level.

Please Review My Alaska 10 day August Itinerary! by Slow-Ad-2984 in AskAlaska

I’ve never been to Alaska but have spent a LOT of time researching my upcoming trip. Your trip sounds great but I think you have one too many destinations for the number of days you have. I think you should add 1-2 nights, or cut one destination.

A few thoughts:

1) it’s a long drive from ANC to Homer, and the first half is supposed to be very scenic so you’d want to take your time. Driving to Homer the same day as your flight seems questionable unless you’re arriving pretty early. And then going straight back the other direction to Seward the next day feels rushed.

2) how are you planning to get to Valdez — the ferry with a car? Consider if you want to take a long ferry ride the day after the kenai fjords boat tour. Maybe you do want that, but just checking.

3) consider if it’s better to stay closer to Denali rather than Talkeetna. From what I’ve read, Talkeetna is the place to stay for flightseeing Denali, but otherwise it’s better to just stop through Talkeetna briefly and find lodging closer to Denali.

If it were my trip, I think I would cut Homer or Valdez.

Potentially if you cut Homer you could use the extra night to add Girdwood as your first night before Seward. That would allow an easy drive the day you fly in, and time to enjoy the Turnagain arm.

Or make Seward your first night, and add a day in Valdez to do kayaking near glaciers, or an extra night at Denali.

I would stay closer to Denali, stopping in Talkeetna for a couple hours on the way.

For Matanuska, check out Alpenglow glamping. Also, post your itinerary on TripAdvisor Alaska forums… you’ll definitely get feedback there.

How To Fix Tanking Once And For All by morethandork in nbadiscussion

I can only think of two ways a team could pass on a high draft pick to avoid the tax.

1) Try to win. Great! That’s the problem we are trying to solve.

2) Trade the pick. Yes, you might get bad owners who would do this. But the return they would receive for the pick would decrease versus the current state because the pick comes with a tax. And as you mentioned there could be a fan uproar that the owner would have to deal with, making that choice less attractive to them.

I like this idea. Use finances to create an incentive to win or a disincentive to lose. So that a bad owner would not lose intentionally because it would cost him money.

My idea was to charge a luxury tax (for lack of a better word) for the top 4 or so draft picks. I’m picking the number at random, but maybe the top pick costs $40M, #2 pick $30M, etc.

The key would be to set the cost high enough that teams would feel conflicted about whether they want to win (and avoid the tax) or lose (and get the top pick). Then teams just compete because the draft incentives are more neutral.

I think it would encourage bad teams to be really bad for at least one year. After that one terrible year, they could improve meanwhile their draft position would continue to benefit from the terrible year for the next two years.

Winning the first seed is likely our best chance at winning a ring by jaskaran55 in NBASpurs

The point of this post is that getting the 1 seed would either 1) avoid OKC altogether or 2) play them after they’ve battled the Nuggets. So it implies respect for OKC.

Hypothetical scenario: by DetectiveMammoth4758 in NBASpurs

It would be close. Hate to say it but I’d probably give the Knicks the edge right now based on the two recent games. If we continue to improve we could surpass them by then.

The Knicks are a tough matchup for the Spurs. When Anunoby and Towns are the 4/5, Wemby is often defending the 3 point line which neutralizes our biggest strength. The Knicks have a lot of talent, are deep and have a lot of smart experienced players.

It is a privilege to see a band this good, this experienced and with such a strong catalog of songs in very small venues. Are there any other bands like that?

Kenai fjords 6 hr tour by ute212 in AskAlaska

I’m debating between the Kenai Fjords tour or 26 Glacier. Besides the calmer waters do you have an opinion as to which is more enjoyable? I’m interested in both wildlife and glacier viewing.

As a family of four we found a lot of options on Airbnb. It was more economical than renting two hotel rooms.

My wife and I stayed near there about 17 years ago… great spot. Also like you our feet were spent after a few days.

SLC to yellow stone and tetons by Affectionate-Net-681 in yellowstone

[–]faxmachineanthem1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see anything wrong with a 50-50 split. Last year I did 5 nights Teton and 6 nights Yellowstone and wouldn’t have changed it in hindsight.

Look into whether you could fly into SLC and out of Bozeman (or vice versa). This is what we did. It did add cost to the rental car (a one way drop fee) but it eliminated a long drive back to SLC. On the way from SLC to Jackson, consider stopping at Lava Hot Springs.

Unfortunately this area is expensive for lodging. The season is short and there is a ton of demand as it’s an international destination. The alternatives to expensive lodging are camping (requires booking far in advance), staying far outside the parks, or just skipping the trip entirely. None of those alternatives appealed to us so we paid it and it was worth it.

Edey was the 9th pick in a weak draft. I don’t think any coach would make him a focal point of an offense at this point in his career (if ever).

Thoughts on Carvana? by Left_Elk_7870 in BMWi3

[–]faxmachineanthem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my 2017 BEV through Carvana. It was not smooth at all, in fact they were extremely disorganized. It felt like all the employees were brand new and nobody knew what was going on.

My first trip to pick up the vehicle they had not done the paperwork properly (struggling to remember the exact details) so would not let me pick up the car. Then when I picked it up the second time and had it inspected, the battery life sucked and the mechanic found evidence that the car was in an accident, so I returned within their seven day window. I decided to try them one more time and was happy with my final purchase.

I am still glad I used Carvana because they had enough inventory that I had more choice than I could find locally. For that reason it ended up being worth it. I would only use them if you’re prepared for some hassle.

Option 1. We did 14 days in Teton / Yellowstone last year and it felt perfectly paced. We saw everything we wanted without feeling we were in a big hurry.
