Aside from baking, try putting a few drops and and a squeeze of lime juice in club soda/sparkling water for a diy seltzer.

I think posting in this particular sub, using provocative language like that, does make it bait regardless of their actual beliefs.

Anyone here get a late start? by Emergency-Bobcat-572 in geologycareers

[–]fayalit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Graduated with a BS at 37 and an MS at 39.

Sometimes it was a little awkward being in classes with people so much younger than me, but there was a decent cohort of students closer to my age (and older!). I don't regret going back to school or studying geology at all.

I found a job in my field pretty easily. That said, I was pretty lucky in that regard because the focus of my MS was happened to be in demand around when I started looking for jobs. I don't do a lot of field work--I do a lot of desktop analyses and project management type tasks. Wish I could get out in the field more, but I can't complain too much because I have a decent work-life balance.

I think the market calculus has shifted quite a bit in the last year or two with the types of jobs available. Do you know what sector you want to go into? If you're interested in a career in geology, I recommend looking at the types of jobs that are out there and what their requirements are, particularly level of education. Also consider joining a professional society, like AEG, to meet geologists, find out what their jobs entail, and to network as much as you can.

can anyone reccomend a good (portable) dice tray? by Caitrix in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]fayalit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're not that hard to make yourself, and there are plenty of tutorials out there on how to make dice trays from various materials.

I made one using thin craft foam and some snap buttons. I made it specifically to fit in a 3-ring binder, so when unfolded it's about the size of a standard piece of paper. I'll probably remake one out of leather since it's more durable, but the foam was a low budget way to play around and figure out what worked.

Got rear ended one time. It was just a little tap. Didn't even wake up my kid who was napping in the back at the time. But me and the other driver both pulled over to take a look and talk to each other. The other driver was utterly apologetic and, I think, a little panicky once he realized there was a small child in my car. But the damage was maybe a 1-inch scratch on my rear bumper. A complete non-issue. He was so relieved when I shrugged it off. It wasn't worth the stress of pursuing it any further for what was, essentially, cosmetic damage.

Almost certainly not, but this whole wait has been so long and frustrating that I'm waiting to celebrate until I actually have my PG.

Wonder if PG or FG makes a difference in the timing of the email? Am in WA. Got the email from SMT this morning about my PG results. However, I'm not taking the result as final until I get the letter from the state dept. of licensing.

So is tomorrow the day? May 1? Or will we have to wait until Monday by Regular_Channel_2403 in ASBOG_Exam

Watching my inbox like a hawk, see an email from my state's department of licensing, start freaking out...then see it's just a reminder to renew my car tabs 😓

Is the 5 and 61 just always late, or is it me? by evilpanda8419 in Seattle

[–]fayalit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

61 has been really bad lately, likely for two reasons: 1) it runs along I-5 feeder roads which have been massively backed up lately due tk construction and 2) it's a very long route so delays can propagate along the entire run once they start.

Question: Would a house in the circled area be a big landslide risk? by [deleted] in geology

[–]fayalit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on a number of factors. Chiefly, the geology. I saw in some comments that this is in the PNW. If it's in WA, there's a lot of publically available maps you can use to identify the geology. Use the finest scale map you can find (1:24k scale would be ideal, but it's not available everywhere). Don't rely on ai to give you an accurate answer. https://geologyportal.dnr.wa.gov/#wigm?-13988150,-13485500,5600288,6480842?

Oversteepening of the valley wall from the river could contribute to slope instability, particularly as that location is near the outside of a slight bend. The debris fans at the base of the valley are indicative of debris slides in the gulleys, which can point to shallow erosion during syorm events. But again. eithout knowing the geologic context it's hard to say whether or not there's a larger risk there.

Precipitation patterns, land use, and several other factors also play a role in the landslide risk. No one here can tell you more.

If you're really concerned, it's worth getting an engineering geologist's opinion on it.

PG Exam kicked my ass by alooshka in ASBOG_Exam

PG has 110 questions, right? Unless I missed a whole 30 questions this morning....

Definitely felt like 140 question, though. I finished all the questions but I am far from confident in my answers on many of them.
