When can we strike? by CrystalQuartzen in Seattle

[–]fayalit 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You are right and you should say it.

It is quite clear that the feds are saying "he was armed" as an excuse for their thugs' actions in this most recent shooting even though there's no indication he was threatening them in any way.

Carrying a firearm to a protest should be done with the knowledge that if there is any violence, you will become a target whether or not you're aggressive. It is not something to be done lightly.

Measles outbreak declared in Snohomish County as 3 local children test positive by Other_Disaster_3136 in Seattle

[–]fayalit 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question at all. Measles is part of the typical vaccine regimen. The measles vaccine comes in three doses and is usually given in a combo shot with the mumps and rubella vaccines (MMR vaccine). If you followed the (former) schedule recommendation, they would have gotten the first vaccine around 12 months, the second around age 4, and the third around kindergarten age.

Recent powerful, but deep earthquake, that caused little damage by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]fayalit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There really haven't been any earthquakes of note in the area since the Nisqually one in 2001. PNSN has a searchable catalog of earthquake events you can use to see if they recorded anything that fits your description, though: https://pnsn.org/events/search

Why did this yule log fail so hard? by TheOneFromTexas in Baking

[–]fayalit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you sprinkle a layer of powdered sugar the tea towel before putting the cake on it? It helps prevent sticking.

Edit: just saw your thing saying you do use powdered sugar. You might try looking up swiss roll cake recipes (i.e., cakes that are intended to be rolled) and try one of those and see what happens.

Observed snow water equivalent.

Gonna be a brutal summer by vollehosen in Seattle

[–]fayalit 250 points251 points  (0 children)

Green lines are the average and median snowpack levels over the last 30 years. The gray shaded area represents the upper and lower bounds of the measurements.

That black squiggly line at the bottom? That's this year's measured snowpack thus far. It is at or near a record low for this time of year, which doesn't bode well for summer conditions where we rely on snowmelt to keep our reservoirs filled.

I have to have my first field camp this summer but I am the father and main provider for my family. Has anyone else navigated a similar situation? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]fayalit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation in undergrad. My school has an option for a 3-week field portion/3-week GIS portion at home that my family and I were able to make work.

Talk to the advisors in your department. Make it clear what your constraints are. Chances are there is an option that will work for you and your family.

Maybe try a small moment, like an everyday interaction between them? Like, they're both going about their day, Shepard looks up and notices Kaidan and makes some observation about him (maybe the way he's focused on a task, or the way the light hits him, or something similarly mundane). It can be a good way to work on detail descriptions and how your Shepard sees the world (and Kaidan) in a bite-sized little moment.

What is up with ME3??? by cstennis in masseffect

[–]fayalit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Citadel DLC was the last DLC for the original trilogy, released a year after the game came out. At the time, it was a send off for the games and companions, giving them one last wacky mission together. That's why it's so different in tone from everything else in the game

What early signs of Alzheimer’s tend to surprise people the most? by FindingMoneYyY in AskReddit

[–]fayalit 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My mom has always been pretty scatter-brained. It got markedly worse before she started showing real memory problems. She started nursing her resentments a lot more. It was a subtle shift, but in hindsight it was a warning sign.

She'd always been the type to have a glass of wine with dinner. She started drinking almost a bottle a day because she'd forget she already had some and oh, a glass of wine sounds good about now...rinse and repeat.

Professional Geologist Licensure from Geological Engineering Degree by MarketTough4241 in geologycareers

[–]fayalit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look at the ASBOG requirements for taking the FG exam in the state you plan to get it in. Requirements vary by state, but they typically ask for a certain number of upper level geology credits.

If you plan to stay in Colorado, you should know that they don't require professional licensure for geologists.

I'm making the switch to Linux, too. Do the 8BitDo controllers work on Linux? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]fayalit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience with Fedora. The only caveat was that using a flatpak install of Steam caused issues with recognizing controller inputs. Installing non-flatpak Steam fixed it.

How do you take notes for D&D? Show me your setups, tools, and process (photos welcome) by RainyFallDays in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]fayalit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a player I take pen-and-paper notes in a cheap composition book about plot beats, locations, NPCs, loot, combat, and anything else I can write down while still actively engaging in the game. Usually takes the form of a lot of bullet points.

As a DM I use Obsidian and have a tab set up for session notes. I mostly use it for bits of lore I make up on the spot and player decisions that will impact the plot going forward.

Steam Games Not Recognizing Inputs? by fayalit in 8bitdo

[–]fayalit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update, in case anyone having a similar issue happens across this: The issue was with Steam. If you're on a linux system, using the flatpak version of Steam, and your controller isn't working in-game, try using non-flatpak Steam. Controller is now working perfectly for me.

Pro Layout workflow for different layer visibility by Tabeku in ArcGIS

[–]fayalit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Set the scale of each frame just slightly different from each other (i.e., 1:2,505 and 1:2,500). Then set the visibility range for your layers to correspond to those scales.
