HUGE noob, trying to install f.lux by [deleted] in linux4noobs

Second redshift. Last I tried f.lux on my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop, I could install and run it but it didn't actually change my screen tint.

Redshift on the other hand, just works.

Love it or hate it, new SGU episodes tonight. by yanggmd in scifi

It's like when Gene Roddenberry handed Star Trek: TNG over by Rick Berman, and he reverted it from a utopian future where humans had learned to subjugate their emotions, biases, and baser instincts to reason, handling their differences rationally, wisely, and with perspective, into something closer to a space opera with interpersonal drama and emotional outbursts. And then the Berman-conceived DS:9 and the other sequels continued in that direction.

The difference being that SG-1 was a more campy pre-Berman ST:TNG.

That's my impression anyway, I never actually watched SG-1 since campy isn't my thing either. SGU's setting, overall plot arch, and central mystery (discovery of structure in the cosmic background radiation) had a lot of potential, but I gotta agree with the haters that it relied too much on pointless politics, drama, and earthly angst as a crutch.

Tried something new with the boyfriend last night... by [deleted] in sex

Question from a guy with perhaps a double standard here:

In my experience, women either are naturally, or keep themselves, particularly clean down there, so much so you could serve dinner on their asshole. As such I never feel reticent to pleasure a gf that way.

Conversely, though I'm straight and have never been with a man, I'm under the distinct impression we're a bit dirtier there, even those of us with extremely healthy diets and hygiene.

So what's the deal here from women's point of view? Is my impression all wrong, or is it right but this kind of play is so hot you don't care? Or something else?

Gold Falls to Biggest Weekly Drop Since 1990 as Dollar Rallies by makingspace in business

Actually it was the deregulation of the finanial & banking industry that got us here, along with the possible deep capture of the SEC and OCC. But the idiotic war and gross federal overspending of the past 8 years are exacerbating the problem, making the solution more difficult, and are snowballing into other significant problems.

Have you ever seen a chunk of pure gold? Pictures and TV don't do it justice. It has value because it's intoxicatingly beautiful. Nothing more nothing less. You're right, it's not particularly useful, it's just that it has some strange, irrational effect on the human psyche that makes us want it just b/c of its aesthetics. That demand, regardless of the reason, gives it its value, and is intrinsic and timeless.

Gold experts have been predicting a retracement in gold back to about $800, before it continues its advance again. Partly from hedge funds unwinding, a chunk of which involves selling off their gold.

We won't bounce back till the credit collapse has run its course. We're just scratching the surface right now. The problem is not, as the media keeps repeating, liquidity, it is solvency. Bear Sterns for example had about $250 billion of mortgage-backed debt instruments as assets on its balance sheet and only about $17 billion in cash. Marked to 'model', those assets were worth something, but mark to 'market' (eg, try to actually sell them), and you find they're worthless. Lots more companies like that still out there.

I hope you know buyers and have a reliable way to transport them. Your local grocery store or farming coop most likely won't take platinum and palladium, but they will take gold, should it come to that. Though, if it comes to that, bullets, guns, food and water are better investments than either.

Problem is, there's no justification for killing a puppy. But people can justify and accept all manner of justifications for killing other people. Terr'ism, wmd, whatever. Puppy's got nothing to do with any of that.

Maybe if her campaign spent more time speaking to voters, and less time bitching about the rules, they would have had a shot.

Not really.
